Led Users Unite!

Panels won't get larger, that makes individual units too expensive and people won't buy those because they want LED to be cheaper. If you spread the diodes out over a larger space that increases the cost to build/ship sooo much I don't see why people are not understanding this.
What if the bigger sized panel produces a much higher yield? There will always be some company that takes advantage of a method or trend that leads to a superior product. If manufacturers had to raise cost for the design it wouldn't be drastic in the slightest. There is also the reverse possibility that cooling such a panel would actually be easier because you don't have diodes crowded together. But anyway I would definitely pay an extra 10%-15% for 25%-40% more coverage. All I'm saying is that if someone were to introduce this new standard and it proved to be more successful there would be a chain reaction of copy cats.

Another theory I have having used a device based on the same concept is imagine having a panel that's light is redirected by a series of fiber optics so you could have full control over coverage on a bud to bud level. Such a device wouldn't even have to be hung to provided sniper accurate coverage to individual bud sites. The Octo-Sniper Grow Light by BlackMesa coming 2015 :P Getting back to being serious, I think this would be very easy to pull off because LED light is insanely directional so lets redirect it.

jdizzle I have had this thread subscribed for some time now I see you are quite active in this thread I have a couple questions.

First the recent talk of upgraded panels from these others forum members has deterred me from purchasing a Blackstar once again. In your opinion would I be wasting my money buy purchasing a blackstar is there a new model coming out soon that would totally make the current ones obselete?

And second I always see people talking about 3W diodes that don't run at 3W so if they do not run at 3W what is the point of even calling them a 3W diode? However I am assuming these are in some way related to a computer processor does achieving more power in the diode have something to do with how much one can overclock these units or is that far off from the subject?
Research posts by user "astroastro" in this very thread. You will learn a lot, I promise.

I think I see a lot of silly thoughts here

120 degree lens cannot possible work the same/aswell as a 90 degree lens
With the current generation of lenses, youre right, it's not possible. Thats why im talking about the lenses of the future. If they can make 1w lights with these special lenses more intense than 3w without them, I don't see why adding an intensifying lense to a 120 degree lense wont make that 120 seem more like a 90 degree standard...ive even heard them increasing coverage of 30 degree standard lenses with these new ones. I think your observations are silly too, thank you.

know it wasnt thrown at me but ill give me opinion anywho. if your thinking of getting a blackstar i would just go buy one i dont know about blackstar but other companies might be coming out with newer models and such but they will be a higher price tag and a much better unit assuming you do your homework. blackstar is a solid led but not a high end unit if they upgrade prices will probly go up so you would have to weigh in your thoughts after you saw the new price.

as far as 3w diodes its just a matter of they are 3w diodes but if the driver ran them at 3w's all the time they would burn out hella quick so they run em at whatever 50 -70 % or what have you to prolong there life. this is were led marketing can get sketchy in my opinion a company" cough cough" says there light is a 357w model but when you put it under a light meter it conveniently reads 175-180w's well in my opinion thats a kick in the junk especially when ya paid damn near 1000 bucks for the thing, clever marketing for the led companies but very shitty for the person using them just my opinion though.

You're saying one thing, I said another. I didn't say a 90 degree lens on a 1w diode can't make it equal to a 3w without a lens or a wider one. When all other factors are the same, and the only difference is the lens angle... then no a 90 != anything other than 90

Blackstar has new 2011 units but I don't know much about them. I think the Blackstar LEDs are the most proven cheaper panels, and the only ones I know of for $2 or less per actual running watt up front (ex: a 240 Blackstar uses ~140w and can be had for $250-300 making it ~$2 or less per watt). The whole thing with the 3w is that they can reliably pulse/test it without destroying it, you have to run most at 50-75% the max wattage as far as 3w diodes go (I think 1w diodes can be driven to the highest % of their max wattage? which is how some get away with saying their 1w panels are more efficient, although they have crap penetration in exchange for the higher efficient)

Hmmmmmmm interesting.
I wish people would stop hating so much, this seems to be a nice thread.
1. dont knock it untill you try it.
2. if you still dont like it move on.

Honestly I just scrolled through to look at pics lol but I saw some nice set ups and buds :-)
subbed.

Dont know if most of you guys visited ledbudguy.com latley but if ya have you might have seen ledbudguy or ledgrowshow says he cut 2 plants down and weighed in a 6.3 zips. the pic of the bud all dry once again were all close up shots and no landscape photo of all the buds hanging or even a photo or video of the bud on a scale. looks to me like he was more around 4 zips but its hard to tell with just close up shots.

Yeah he didn't provide any pic's torwards the end of the grow. The lack of any pictures and extreme close ups of the pic's he did put out are clear indicators of a shady journal. I also notice that a lot of people are revolting and calling him out for the shadyness. I certainly believe 6 oz is possible from a 180w light but not in the open without being encased by reflection or a light rail.

Just out of curiosity, how did you even estimate 4oz? I can't even estimate 1oz based on close ups of single bud shots? :P

I have yet to see the journal in question, but my last grow with a 180w led yielded 4 ounces and I know for a fact I could have gotten more. 6 ounces could very well be possible if everything is dialed in right.
