That is not even a big deal, there is typical up keep cost and operational cost. I still don't understand this argument, led vs hps, they are apples and oranges. Hard to compare apples and oranges. If doing a large multiple light grow then of course HID is going to be the route most will go and if doing a smaller space that is limited for air flow and cooling then makes sense to coin up for led. But again if it is a commercial grow that has to meet standard then a DIY led might not make the certification process with out that UL tag.

well add it up over the years. $150 a year replacing bulb and reflector . $1500 over 10 years plus 50% more electricity cost. And then disposal. You can't legally throw an hps bulb in the regular trash. You have to go to a recycle center that takes those. They're not recycable either. 10 bulbs over 10 years per light that's pretty bar for the environment too with all those toxic compounds in the bulb.

led will last 10 years no bulb change and electrical savings.

I had a friend who replaced 10 1000 watt hps with 15 inda gro Induction lamps. They get the same yield, better quality. Save about $6,000 a year on electricity. $1,000 a year on bulbs. In 3 years of savings. The lights pay for themselves.

we all need to cutback on the electricity we use. Until every one is solar powered.

no ac and no loud ass exhaust fans lol.
what do you use in total for your grow in terms of air movement ?
when you say no exhaust do you really mean you are not using any extraction at all
i do not have heat issues but extraction is still required here for air changes / odor control / humidity control etc

open window and a couple of fans that's it. But i do have a portable ac for August and September 100+F during the summer where I live. Summer I usually sell clones no flower but I'm gonna try with my lights dimmed like they are now. I have seen the difference between hps and led and the hps guys don't want to let go of the past lol. I was shown how to grow beast from a guy who was growing since the late 70's may he R.I.P.

no not really. I taught him how to grow. He does the opposite of everything I tell him. He does hydro now too,. He would get so upset when people would like my stuff more than his. He would call dispensaries and patients I work with and bad mouth me and try and steal my business. We had a falling out because he is a hater and a drama queen. I used to date his sister. He was weirdly obsessed with her. Hee told her bullshit stories that i robbed him while he was drunk. which couldn't be further from the truth. When i actually gave him seeds..


Plants prefer an even broad spectrum like the sun. They'll grow under anything. They will show their best pheno expressions under a balanced spectrum. Thats a fact. You can't argue with that. Well you can but you would be wrong.

its also a fact that led and induction. produce better colors and about 3% higher thc and cbd and cbn. Hps bleach the shit out of plants.

each to their own, im just thinking from my perspective in the UK its cold here
if i were to replace the hps with led i would still need plenty of extraction to control smell and humidity
heat is rarely an issue here, during the winter i struggle to keep it at 75f in the room with only heat
from the lights
in summer it stays around 80-85 which works well

i like the idea of an open window and a couple of fans, wish it was that simple here
i keep the extraction running all the time and it does work out quite costly as the boxed fan i have is 280w , almost using as much as running another 600w light
but without it i could end up with a room full of mold/mildew or cops lol due to the smell even with led i will still need plenty of extraction

You can buy roughly 4-5 years of reflectors and bulbs, excluding the ones included initially, for the price difference alone. Before those 6 years passed and certainly long before those 10 years above passed, there will be professional led lamps that will make both the gavita and the current led (especially diy white cob leds) a bad choice.

Besides that, the gavita pays back for itself and more. If you can't afford that bulb and reflector after a year you shouldn't be growing with professional horticulture lighting. Same for not being able to grow quality under hps... in that case something like led or T5 may be a better choice, easier to manage perhaps.

Being able to replace the reflector part of a gavita fixture separately isn't a downside.

The lifetime estimates of LED assume a professional application. People replace cobs and drivers too.

Can't argue with the disposal point. Those cobs are much easier to trash.

If money matters so much, you want to get as many as possible quality dense nuggets from tall colas on a given space. For that, gavita beats all. If you got plenty of space extra and want to compete in an imaginary efficiency race, DIY LED beats HPS.

High ppf + higher than by led fans recommended temps = max cannabis production. According to actual scientific research anyway...

I'm not against led and actually plan on building my own DIY, but I'm saying the argument of led vs hid is pointless. People are not going to switch to led with people attacking each other and honestly people get put off from trying things because people on RIU get emotional about how they grow. The reason I want to give the leds a run is for the environmental impact of hids, no other reason with the exception of added UV light. Just this whole thing of combative opinions is getting very old and played.

leds don't have uv. Its the hps people that talk all the shit on the led threads. We don't go into peoples threads and randomly tell them to change their lighting. People get scared when their beliefs are challenged and especially when proved wrong.

we give people options they can go with if they ask.. if people can't afford led. I tell them to go with cmh. Which is better than hps too.

just like hash makers we want the very best quality in the most efficient way possible. that can go with grow methods and environment too. Not just lighting. Most led users on here except a few are organic heads. So that environmental aspect comes into play as well.

For some reason I thoght leds had extra uvb light, guess that is just cfl.

So the reason you shouldn't get a 50% efficient lamp now is because you'll be able to get 70% efficient lamp at the same price in 5 years. Using the same reasoning, why get a 42% efficient DE HPS over a generic mogul when you can get a 35% efficient 400W HPS lamp.

I love the whole changing cobs and drivers argument. So far I haven't heard of 1 case of an HLG-C driver failing. It's probably because they're sealed and meant high humidity, outdoor use and are made in Taiwan. I don't expect any of my HLG-C to go bad. The cobs going bad argument is pointless. By the time you'd ever want to replace them, they'll be half price. A properly wired light won't randomly start destroying cobs, although poor connections has been known to damage a few strings in them.
