I've got 4 plants in stretch in the first 2 weeks of flower, as soon as the stretch is done I'm going to untie the stem from the bucket rim and put a tomato cage in each bucket, even up the colas' height. I'll take pictures of the steps and post them here, along with some pics of my latest Kali Mist with probably a month left in flower.

I love the tomato cage, it lets me spread the colas out like a scrog. More light to every cola, bigger buds and yield.

As for helping you more than what you achieve is difficult for me as it is very nice growing.

The only thing I can add for those wondering how to get short Kali Mist at the end is to flower them just after the are out of the nursery, no veging.

jayww it's been years since I've grown from seed and I don't remember how long they take to show sex, hopefully Claude can help us. I agree with Claude if someone has height restrictions, put them in flower just out of the nursery. It's a different situation but I've put clones in flower at 1.5" and had them end as over 3' budcicles, and I put one in flower at 3" and it ended up over 4' tree. All good producers, bud from top to bottom, not useless stretch.

The tomato cage pictures will be up next weekend, I've got some KM, Bubblegum, Jillybean and White Widow almost done their flower stretch. Pretty basic procedure - untie all of the twist ties from the bucket rim; push the 3 legs of the cage into the Pro Mix in the bucket; bend the stem at an angle so as many colas as possible are level on top, attach the stem and weak branches to the cage. This is usually fairly easy.

The cage opens the plant up, lets light and air through the middle, levels off the canopy. I've noticed an increase in yield since using it - 25%-50% depending on the strain. With sometimes 3 dozen colas, some 24"-30", it was difficult to get light to all areas of the plant. Now, with a light mover and plant rotation 3 - 4 times a day along with the tomato cages, I've got light on almost every bud site on every plant at sometime through the day.

Here's a pic of my current Kali Mist in a root constriction bucket. There are only 19 colas on this one, most plants this size have about 3 dozen colas. My Kali Mist genetic chain is a few years old, the branches are offset rather than two per node. I like this, gives more light to the colas, better air flow. This plant has 3-5 weeks left in flower, I like to let Kali Mist go mostly amber. The colas should at least double in volume by then.



If you look up at the picture you can see the legs and rim of the metal tomato cage. Notice how the right stem angles up the cage, while most of the colas are relatively even on top. The cage is 24" tall from the dirt, angling the stem lets us have most of the colas equal distance from the light.

The most developed cola so far, about 9".

This is a Super Silver Haze on the left and a Cheese on the right. Great angle to see the stems angle up the cages while their canopies stay relatively even.



The Super Silver Haze (left) is in a DIY air pruning bucket, the Cheese in a landscape fabric root constriction bucket. Both work well, but of 10 plants I have in flower the 2 air pruning bucket plants are the most vibrant and I think the best producers. I'm going to harvest a Strawberry Cough in an Air Pruning Bucket and a second in a root constriction bucket in the next week or two. I'll post which bucket produced the best and what the root balls are like.

This is something I was thinking about the other night. I haven't grown in a while and my experience with cloning is somewhat limited. But am I correct in thinking the main trunk does eventually go to offset nodes (every other) rather than full nodes? Is that what you're meaning, or is that just a clone that come from a branch? I topped a few and took those for clones so I'm just wondering how long before it starts growing like a branch?

Yes, you are correct. I believe that every plant eventually goes to growing in offset nodes in flower. I LST my stems horizontal and keep them flat until the stretch is done, there is very little growth in the stem after being bent flat. The offset stems can make a weak spot that can be dangerous LSTing the plant into CCOB shape (flat and a circle), extra care and stem tie downs are needed.

In flower plants should start growing offset nodes. In veg the plants should grow offset only after it is sexually mature, usually by the second or third generation clone for me.

Thanks. My theory was to keep them vegging for an infinite 4 cola loop but then I got to thinking otherwise. I guess I'll just have to see how long it lasts.

So i ordered an 11 pack of KM from Attitude along with some other things. I germinated one of the 11. And here she is. I started her later than the other plants going into flowering, but i put her in the closet anyway. Here's some pics of pre 12/12 and now...

Very nice plant! I can't believe how frosty that cola is with ... 3-5 weeks left? Beautiful plant, look for her to swell the last couple weeks of flower and the buds firm up.

Me too. Scrog would be more efficient than CCOB, more yield, better spacing - but I like the portability of my grows. The tomato cage makes it more scrog like but I don't get a meadow-like canopy like I see so often on Scrog. It's a lot of fun for me and it's easy once done a few times.

thanks i'll have to veg longer and try the cage out or something, i started "pinching" or "supper cropping" or "High stress training" my super lemon haze and some other plants. i was amazed by their almost 24 hour recover rates. on the super lemon haze plant went from one main stem to a nice bush. i will be trying this again to try and get several top colas from my other strains ;p here is a pic er two of the slh with hst.

oh,, i guess this is their 7th week actually!

Notice the double bucket rim - I've started using air pruning pots on all of my plants, and a second cover bucket. The improvement in growth over root constriction buckets is phenominal. I've got two Strawberry Cough to harvest this weekend, one in a R.C. bucket and the other in an air pruning bucket, I'll keep track of my yield and post some pics.

My new Kali Mist in flower has another week or so of stretch left, but I have a Serious Bubblegum just about done stretch that shows why a cage works great with CCOB. I usually veg the stems vertical to 22" each then train horizontal which stops the stem growth - this plant ended up with 44" and 41" stems to circle a 38" bucket rim. An 85" CCOB plant has more branches than a 7' vertical plant because there is almost no stretch in the CCOB in flower, tighter nodes.

After untying the stems from the bucket rim gently spread the stems and put in a tomato cage. The cages I use are 24" from the first rim to the top, if that's too tall I cut the one of the sections out and use a 12" cage. The semi circle bend in the two stems will stay when untied, making it easy to bent the stems around the cage.

Next spread the branches and starting from the back and going towards the colas spread the branches inside and outside the rim depending on which side of the stem they're on. It's best to keep most of the branches outside the rim so the inside isn't shaded for light and air flow. I use twist ties to hold them up, attaching the twist tie several nodes down from each cola so not to damage the thin stems.

This was an interesting plant, it grew too tall vertically and the veg light I was using heated the top of the veg box so the tips of the stems died. I just left it because I had no room in my flower cage and branches growing up until the tips die from heat stress then more branches growing up. Many colas.

From here I let the plant grow up to the light, in 3 or 4 days it'll look like it's been growing around the cage for years. I keep going around the plant tying up colas until they're all straight up and spaced out.

This Kali Mist has 2-4 weeks left, hopefully a lot of swell. I'm thinking 8-10 cups of cured bud, not the best KM producer I've had but the bud is going to be sweet - frosty weeks ago. This plant is in a root constriction bucket, it's improved growth but I think I'll get better yield and a healthier plant with an air pruning bucket.

This is a good example of the need for a cage - the back colas (right) are ~24" and the front colas/branches would get less light. Keeping the cola tips even is important. As well, when the colas get heavy they always tip to one side, eventually they all fall in a clump. 6" branches are fine, but for longer branched strains tying the colas/branches to the cage keeps things exactly where you want them. This KM has only 17 colas 12" or longer, the alternating nodes of older clones cuts down on the number of branches but the colas are bigger.
