Kali Mist - Serious Seeds

I'm not sure if this is still a Kali Mist thread or not, but I have a few questions for you hobbes: How much did/does your Kali mist stretch in flower? I currently have 5 females from a pack of 11, cloned them, and am flowering in order to select the best female from my new stock of kali mist clones. Four of my females are identical (tall, stretchy), one is shorter and bushier than the rest but still has the long, thin sativa leaves. Did you select your mom based on the final result or plant structure and looking back, do you remember how your phenos varied from your pack of seeds? Thanks for your insight.

"How much did/does your Kali mist stretch in flower?"

More than any other strain - the absolute most stretch I've had in over 50 strains.

I've had 1.5" clones go into 12/12 in a DWC bucket and end up 36". The 5' RDWC plant on the left in the first picture was 6" going into flower. If you're going with a vertical grow rather than low stress trained put them in short - I recommend double topping for 4 colas. Below is a 4' double topped plant (4 stems) - 16 feet of stem - those 48" stems were 16" going into flower:

even double topped and grown in Pro Mix I had 3X stretch with Kali Mist.

.

.......... 6" to 60" in RDWC . : .. 16" to 48" double topped in Pro Mix

16" CUBE

The CUBE has the biggest yield

"Did you select your mom based on the final result or plant structure and looking back, do you remember how your phenos varied from your pack of seeds?"

I've had my Kali Mist genetics for years, when I first grew her from seed my selection process was more along the lines of which of the 4/4 females randomly survived as the mother - like yours mine looked like identical clones. The way I perceive it, either I lucked out or: Serious Seeds put enough work into their breeding that I couldn't help but be lucky.

Now with new strains from seed I run 3 mothers, then their clones for a second grow, before selecting the genetics that produce the Spectrum Of Effects that I want - effects are all and everything else is peripheral. If we want purple we can buy a milkshake, if we want fast we can jump off a cliff - they don't get us high. Keeping genetics for all of your mothers from seed while curing and Spectrum Of Effects testing takes some more work - if you don't have the room or the time I suggest going with a longer flowering taller mother (for Kali Mist only) - you're more apt to get the sativa leaning pheno. Easier is not always better, most times but not always.

does anyone know how the yeild from his 1 cola kali compares with the yeild from the 4 cola? and how does this compare to the yeild from his ccob method? Im on the fence wether I should do a 4 cola kali grow or a ccob grow...

thanks

Kali mist tends to get very leggy with no one dominant growth shoot (when grown from clone). My Kali tends to grow 4-5 main shoots that end up getting covered in wispy, resinous buds that foxtail and look exactly like you'd expect given the near 100% sativa genetics. Just keep her from getting too tall and your yields will be fine.

Great response homebrewer, I love that picture btw, that is your plant? very good camera work.

You end up with 4 or 5 shoots? So if I just let the plant grow naturally and no topping or LSTing Im going to get a good balance between bud size/overall yeild? whereas if I top for 4 colas I will get even more whispy and smaller buds but probably more overall weight?

I might just let them grow out naturally then, will save some vegging time as I wont have let the 4 colas grow back up before flower and I will get a good result from what your saying. sounds like I need to get my room ready for flower than. Hobbes' 5 foot kali in that pic above was put into flower at only 6 inches! my seedlings are almost 6 inches now!

Well, I'd recommend topping the plant and letting it grow from there. You always get 2 main shoots after a top but like I said with this strain, it seems like every growth shoot wants to become the lead shoot. I even top it in flower because she likes to streeeeeetch. You can safely grow them to 15 inches in veg and assume she'll triple in height in flower. Even if she get's too tall, top her in flower and trim up some of the lower branches to concentrate the energy on about 15-20 bud sites. She takes a while to learn but she's worth it. Euphoric and uplifting with zero sleepy comedown, your problems and concerns will be replaced with a smile and a sense that everything is going to be alright.

HAHA great, sounds like one awesome strain, Im sure not too many growers out there are interested in growing lanky sativas indoors, so Im probably going to have some of the nicest buds around. gotta get myself a carbon filter before they start stinking up the place. Do you find theres a strong Skunk influence in the "secret" genetics of Kali-Mist? a few of my seedlings smell like skunk/leafy green, almost a skunk cabbage scent.

Kali Mist and other high quality sativas are connoisseur strains in that it takes someone who appreciates cannabis and its great variety to truly enjoy them. While I have yet to find someone who doesn't like kali mist, people (read: fricken amateurs) still love their knockout indicas. It's the same thing with beer, people prefer that light lager shit over a nice hoppy brew. You can't teach class I guess ;).

She's spicy, sweet and exotic. My pheno smells like candied lavender, the furthest thing from 'skunk'.

There are new smells coming through everytime I sniff her, but there were a few times where some skunk smell seemed to bite right through the other scents. Im a smoker so this probably doesnt help me pick out the finer notes. Candied lavender? lol spoken like a true connoisseur homebrewer! Im expecting there will be more delicate aromas coming out as she matures.

I'm not an indica smoker, I dont smoke much weed to be honest, but I have no desire to get STONED, I like to get HIGH. growing my own is really the only option I have since no one deals with Sativa when they are just trying to produce quantity.

btw homebrewer, do you brew beer? something else ive been meaning to get into this winter, so far Ive been too busy with the plants

I've been homebrewing for about a decade. I can make beer as good as anyone, except for those Belgians .

Pickle, you're in for a treat!! I've dealt with dozens of strains, and kali mist is hands down my favorite! Homebrewer is correct on the stretch .... she takes off when you flip the lights to 12/12!! I typically LST her when she starts to go. I'm really not aiming for anything other than keeping my canopy balanced by doing this, though. As far as the smell goes, I find it to be kind of a spicy sandlewood smell more than anything. "Skunk" doesn't really describe it. Mine usually finish up (75%+ cloudy trichomes) in about 14 weeks. I suppose it depends on your phenotype. Either way, your finished product will be something you will be very proud of. I plan on always having a spot or two in my garden for this gem!!

Hahah thanks, as if Im not already excited enough! I think Kali mist breaks away from your general rules when it comes to the stretch. most other strains you can count on doubling height or tripling, but as you see with hobbes' plants he gets a 3 footer out of a 5 inch vegged plant! so i gotta be really careful deciding how long I wait before the switch. Im really hoping I get a good pheno out of the 10 seedlings I have, but it should be a very stable strain so for all I know they are all going to be good phenos. I haven't really decided yet but I was thinking I might try to clone the tops when i do the topping. If that doesnt work out I could try saving a bit of foliage at harvest on my favourite plant and turning it back to veg to become a mother? not sure what my options are just yet I havent really researched that stuff too much, focusing more on the task at hand. I think I may harvest her around 50% cloudy to get the purest possible sativa effect. So not waiting until there are amber trichs. I imagine mold wont be as much of an issue during dry and cure due to the airy looser buds? I think Ive got the grow figured out from here pretty much, already know my nute schedule. got my room temps all good and everything is running smoothly so far, just a little worried about the dry and cure now as I want to slow dry and cure for the best product but not invite mold to set in. I think I got about 4 more months to go! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

also I have heard that the genetics have been slowly getting watered down over the last decade with the seeds serious seeds are making. I got the seeds just a month ago so they are the newest of what Serious Seeds has to offer on Kali Mist, so I really hope this "watering down" is not the case! but isnt that the way everything is... everything used to be "better" back in the day

In the Book of Buds #2 there is a page on Kali Mist. It says that 1 in 4 phenos have a tighter bud formation with more calyxes and less leaf. sortof more of an indica type bud, but the high/smell is all the same. Not that it really makes a difference cause the "leafier" buds are going to have just as much thc but it would be nice to have one of those phenos, would make for very nice looking buds. Just thought Id add that to the Strain review. I'm not sure how accurate that info would be

Nothing has been getting 'watered down' over the years. Busts have maybe occurred and mothers/fathers/crops have been lost and presumably replaced with seed stock. That being said, Serious Seeds offers some super stable genetics and their strains continue to still win awards around the world (most recently a 3rd place at the Cannabis cup for ak47). Kali will treat you well, though I do not recommend revegging anything in order to save the genetics. Clone the females in veg and top or tie down unruly growth in flower. I recently took mine out to 96 days (vs the 77 days from previous crops) and found her to be more euphoric than ever. It really is a beautiful buzz.

Yeah, you should get several good phenos from a 10-pack. There was very little variation with my phenos (10 pack as well). I ended up with 3 males, 1 hermie, and 6 females if memory serves me correct. I agree with homebrewer on the genetics as well ..... Serious Seeds is the best. I've grown their AK47, Chronice, Bubblegum, and Kali Mist, and they've all been more than advertised. Simon has his shit together! Best of luck to ya! I'll be looking for a smoke report ....

hmm well thats reassuring about the seed stock being just as good. I actually had 11 seeds as they for some reason do 11 rather than 10. But when I took the seeds out of their vial and poured them on the table one bounced off and was never found:cuss:
. all the other 10 germinated so that leaves me with a nice selection to choose from. I will have to learn a bit about cloning then because the day for topping is coming really soon(I think I could to them right now if I wanted but they havent got 6 nodes yet so ill just let them wait)

Just thought I'd like to mention that I have opened a thread in my signature for my Kali Mist grow for those interested in this strain. Also the skunk smell that I was getting before has gone away and the plants dont give off an aroma now at 5 week into veg, however if you rub the stem it sure smells like a bag of good bud. Candied lavender might not be too far off, Its really hard to describe other than exotic and zesty, sometimes I think I smell an basil aroma, it definately smells herbal.

HomeBrewer if you happen to stop back in here do you know if topping changes the veg height/ flower height ratio. So would a 16 inch plant with 4 tops stretch about the same as a one top plant at 16 inches? Im guessing that by dividing the growth between 4 tops it will minimize stretch going into flower. Also if you look at hobbes short plant with 4 colas it was taller when it went into veg so maybe I'm right.

I hope Hobbes checks in again someday, seems like a cool guy

I only topped mine once from seed and they grew the expected 2-4 main shoots, just a lot leggier than you'll be used to. I don't know how additional topping would affect the stretch. Just veg her until you can take clones, then tie her down and train her when you've flipped the switch. She's totally manageable.
