Mainlining extends vegging time quite some, but during that tine you get decent root ball while plants still lay low and then after flip you watch them produce. Hope you did not start 12/12 from seed this time?

Nope, no 12/12 from seed this time =P

And yes, I am ready for the longer veg this time around.

I really just hope they are both female and that they pull through all the "torture" =P

Speakin' of torture... Let the main-lining games begin!

Yesterday I topped them. It's always so hard to just cut stuff off from such a nice looking plant =P

But I was very happy to see they were already praying pretty hard this morning! It's always a relief!

Actually the soldering was very easy.

At first my cheap iron was acting up on me getting all dark tipped and sluggy, but I got my dremmel out and brushed the tip to shiny bare metal. THEN I tinned the tip.

After having the tip tinned everything flowed very easily and fast. The Veros have very nice solder pads, so it's a quick solder dab to creat a nice pudle. But beware of keeping too much heat too long on the vero, anythin over 7 seconds or so will start to melt the vero's plastic.
I did that to the first one, no permanent damage, but made it look kinda ugly and "unfinished". Then for all the others I'd just apply the heat, an touch the solder to it, and the Vero's pad would "suck" the solder onto the pad into a perfect drop.

Right now I'm running only 2 of them since my plants are being mainlined and they are looking kinda fragile.

I'll post an update photo soon, when they recover from topping session #2.

Hell yeah, that's awesome. Bright aren't they!?! I'm stoked for you my friend.
SO BRIGHT!

What impressed me most was that I can stare almost directly into my 150w MH bulb while it's on, and I'll only get like a light flash on my eyes. But even with only one of these turned on, I can NOT look at it. It's VERY intense.
I'm really looking forward to what diference it'll make in my final harvest compared to the HPS system.

Way to go JAd! Looking good! I wish you could rename this thread to "Jad3's Torture Chamber!". I think I'll pull up a chair for this. :-)

I'm glad you joined us!

And torture chamber indeed! I've been putting them through hell man... =P
I finally topped for 8 and 6 heads today, and the poor things look battered =P

Also, I learned a valuable lesson. DO NOT USE BARE/EXPOSED METAL WIRE for training. The metal chewed and poisoned a deep groove into my little plant, and it basically disabled one of my 4 tops.
So now the D'S is going to be a 6 topper... Still good I guess. Let's see how it pans out.

Lesson learned.

Tomorrow evening I'll post some new pictures os the 8 way manifold... unfolding... :dunce:

Ouch, never occurred to me that bare metal could be harmful to plants. Lights are looking super bright Jad. What is the actual wattage being pulled compared to what an equivalent might be?

In very rough calculations, not taking thermal efficiencies and what not into account... lets see...

At a datasheet value of round 126 Lumen/W. Each running at 55 watts.

4 x (126 x 55) = 27720 Lumens

Plus the 9w for the fans.

So, in theory, the 4 lights draw a little over 230 watts at the wall. And output something roughly around 26000 Lumens.

220w is what my 150w HPS bulb + ballast drew at the wall. And it had a datasheet rating of about 15000 lumen output. Which decays with bulb life.

A 250w HPS bulb (which draws an actual 300w or more) has an estimated Lumen output of about 29000 Lumens.

Long story short, in very rough figures, with about the same consumption I had on my 150w, my COBs are outputting something closer to what a 250w bulb would. And with better PAR light ratings.
And I could run the VEROs at a much higher current, making them output more light even. Each of these could be drawing 79w at the right current level.

BUT all of this is just nice to think about, for now.

You can check other COB led grows, and see their productions.

I'm just here hoping that my gizmos do in fact kick my old HPS bulbs in the bud. And that they make my little investment into some nice sticky resinous results.

Bare with me. :weed:

Finally a concrete update

Both plants have gotten to the last stage of the mainlining process. The D'S was topped 3 times making for a total of 8 tops. The Cheese likewise, only the metal wire damaged half a stem and made it so only 6 tops where possible.

This is how the recovering garden is looking like today
11.jpg 12.jpg 13.jpg

I love that most of the torture is in the past, and now I can let them grow out in peace.
Not complete peace though, as I'll be tying them down to spread them evenly and also will be doing some defoliation work as they progress. This will be the longest Veg I've ever done. Takes a special kind of patience =P

On a side note, I've recently realised I'm a total doofus. I've done my growing research pretty thoroughly, but something went through the cracks unnoticed. Foolishly.

I had no notion of the HUGE difference the different kinds of exhaust fans have in comparison to each other. As it happens, I've just ordered my first RVK can fan... which can handle real air exchange in my space.
I have realised that I've always had environment problems because I've been trying to vent my tent with duct booster fans... which I've finally learned have no kind of pressure output. It's almost a miracle how I managed to cool an inefficient HPS bulb with a 4 inch duct booster alone xD

Perhaps with the new REAL fan I'll finally begin to dial in my ideal conditions...

Live and learn.

Take care guys,

allthebest :dunce:

One week later update! =)

Just wanted to leave a photo of how well they are taking to the mainlining process.

14.jpg 15.jpg

The new extractor fan works wonders in making the tent environment optimal. It's been holding a nice 27ºC. humidity has been around 48%, but I mist rather regularly.

So far the Cheese is still coming along behind, I also think that growing 8 tops instead of 6 might be more intensive, so the D'S has taken a big advantage.
I really just hope for them to be both females.

Constantly checking for pre-flowers.

Take care guys,

Looking good! What size pots are they in? How close you got those cobs?

This is looking great Jad! I can't wait to see what they turn into. :-)

Hey Jad,

Just catching up. I really appreciate that you share your difficulties
with others, as well as the victories. I guess that I got lucky as I had
not run into the metal effect yet.

The mainlines look great. I really enjoyed MLing.

Good luck,

JD

The pots are 10L which is around 2 gallons. Full perlite. And right now the 2 lit COBs are about 24 inches from the tops.

This is looking great Jad! I can't wait to see what they turn into. :-)
Me neither!! I'm still pondering when I'll be switching to 12/12. I want to have a bountiful harvest, but I don't want to risk creating an uncontrollable jungle =P
I guess I'll cut it a little shorter this time around, just so I can get a feel for it, and kinda see how full the tent will get. And then next time I'll veg them out longer, if I see I cut it too short this time.

Thank you JD! I'm really enjoying this as well! Also, making all these little mistakes and taking lessons from them is what it's all about =) Living n' Learning.

Jad3! Why so far away? I would say 18" for veg and 12-15" for flowrr! That's why cobs are best with an even canopy like SCROG, because you need to have them ultra close so an even canopy is a must
