hey bro, was thinkin (u know i love to over think shit, @ least I overthink cool shit know though)

Yeah anyway, was thinkin about setting up a scrog for when the photo girls go into the v-drip system. With me super croppin 'em they are gettin way mega bush (for my newbness anyway).

But I'm worried bout those small ass little 4" square mesh pots bein able to sustain the weight properly. THought bout puttin coco in the pots instead of hydroton, just cause it weighs a bunch more & would give much more sturdy base (prob. weighs twice as much as hydroton). I actually grew 1 of the autos in coco, and it did well, so I have a little confidence in it.

However, with the x-country move comin up this summer, I really need all them photo girls to go off without a hitch, know whata mean?

So yeah, was thinkin that buildin a scrog would allow me to take the load off of the weak ass 4" net pots. Not sure if I wanna use the scrog the way most folks do (trainin the girls so they weave in & out). I mean it'd be cool, just worried bout the noob factor.

I just want the screen there to enable me to again just re-distribute weight.

I could either lash the screen to the x4 poles around perimeter of the interior of tent, or construct outta wood & I have enough room to make legs for the screen to stand, if ya think thats better.

Either way will be easy, I just wanna get ur opinion on which method would be best, if u feel that it would yield the most.
movin whole fam & x2 vehicles x-country aint cheap my man.

also, speakin of, gonna be takin I-80 for the move out to OR. just wonderin if i was maybe gonna be close to goose's vicinity @ some point during my travels.
pm me if ya want.

thanks for everything brotha

Hey man, sorry if ya already answered this from my previous question. but regarding the Ph.
I realize adding funky checmical (ph up & down) to reservoir on a daily basis is not what we want to do, but where is the threshold?

I just topped off with a gallon of distilled last night, to get it back around 5.6, just went & checked it, and it was down to 4.9.....

I went ahead & threw some PH up in there to get back to 5.5 but if I run into that on a daily basis, what do you suggest? I'm really not pushin the nutes terribly hard. Maybe an extra 25% of awesome blossom & the bloom formula (PPMs are around 2200, recipe says they should be at 1600).

Been runnin that way for the past few weeks & never had it drift that low.

IF that's cool, right on, just wanna know @ what point & how often you would add ph up.

Thanks!
alright... so i think i went over whats happening but im not sure... right now, as they end their life cycle, the amount of nutes they use may drop (try to maintain feeding levels though) while their water intake increases.. as more water gets used than nutes the ph will drop.. but also there are many other things that affect it... like water temp.. amount of dissolved oxygen... type of nutes... ect ect.. the first thing is more likely the most cause tho...

anyways.. over time i have noticed that a lower ph seems to work better.. around the 5.5 to 5.8 range... but i wouldnt let it go below 5.0 or above 6.5.... so if i were you, knowing that your ph will drop like that, you may want to ph up to like 6.2 or 6.0... that way you have time between the falls...

i didnt use technaflora in my hydro set up.. only soil.. so i cant be sure how it actually affects ph... but if it does lower ph its total fine to start with a higher ph and allow it to drift down....

I am starting some new strains in soil and was hoping you might have some ideas on what i should expect from these strains. I have grown ortega from a clone that was supposed to be fro nocal. It is a sol.id indics that i have mastered but its time to broaden my choices. I Have vegging currently Atrain th seeds, nebula paradise seeds, Querkle subcool, and cheesus Buddha seeds, Thanx for any input Sparty (sweet 16 baybe):fire:
i dont have any exerinence with any of those strains personally... i have watched a few querkle grows... seems like a solid grower and good yielder.. and i know cheese strains usually yield well also... but other than that i cant really offer anything...

the idea is fine if you want to do that.. it will help hold the weight some for sure... you can use a screen like you said, you could use tomato cages (something ive been thinking about myself.. had to harvet early this round due to my girls weighing themselves down so much.. it was either harvest early or risk entire plants breaking...) and put around them... or you can always just take string and tie them up to support them... whatever works best in your set up.. basically however you want to support them is perfectly fine!

ill shoot you a PM....

at this point in the game its kinda late.. if you are worried about the lower flower finishing, what you can do is harvest the top 1/2 or 3/4 of your plants, lower the lights, and let the bottom flowers finish out... then harvest them within a week or so...

hey sampson, great thread!! got a kwiky for you, I'm running 1600w's over 15 plants, 1200 HPS and 400 MH for good measure? Is this a good idea for vegging and flowering? I have no idea lol! I have pics in the link below for a better understanding of the lay out ;)

First attempt at growing in Coco under 1600w's....

Nah sammy, my patience are doin alright. However, I really do wanna chop them babies.

However, I am pretty resigned to the fact that it will be at least next weekend (4-3).

Don't wanna start this weekend, trichs are still white & I want amber.

Again, my area rarely gets the nuclear chron-chron, and I bet most idiots harvested early. Prob. been since Dead tour back as a teenager since I've had true properly cured hydro.

So I'm gonna wait for the amber. Got red hairs on about 20% of overall large colas.

My plan was to wait til Wednesday, see if my amber was there. If so, start flushin to gimme 3-4 days of flush. It's Wednesday, I'm gonna wait til next week.

Photo girls are chillin, that extra 4" of space is still holdin tight. Pretty much mashin branches on a daily basis (prob. bout x20 branches everyday). They're lookin nice & lush & totally have that "L" thang goin on.

So confident they will be cool in drip tray for 1 MORE week.

whatcha think? Don't wanna stunt babies. But don't want photo girls stunted anymore. Although they are growin their asses off & recoverin from mashin very well.

Oh yeah FYI, the photo girls are up to 25% bloom nutes 75% grow. Is that gonna be cool to wait another week & increase bloom nutes up to say 75 or 100% by final chop time.

thanks homey!!!

hey man, what type of screen type material should I get for chop day? As in, what to rest them on, on the chop table? And where to grab somethin like that. Craft store, silk screen supply, etc.

And are there any types of screen to avoid?

I have a roll of black nylon screening from screenin a door. Could that be used 4 anything since i already got it?

It's black nylon plastic though.

Don't mind goin 2 a store & I do have access to silkscreeners, etc.

lemme know the sco

One reason that I like the DWC for my first indoor grow is that if I screw up and do something stupid, I'll only kill one plant instead of all of them. I know me, I've seen it done, lol.

I will be vegging mostly indica strains that I got from Amsterdam seed. They are very, very, very immature seeds so I need to see how many crack in the ziplock to know how many I’ll be growing. I feel like I got ripped off by them but I will know for sure when I see how many crack. They all look the same as well so I’m worried about the strains not being as advertized also.

I will be growing 4 to 6 plants for personal use in 2 or 3, 18 gallon totes using DWC. I will be using rockwool cubes and hydroton although I don’t know what size pellets to get yet.

I will be copying your use of GN nutes and use the 3 part system.

I will be copying your SC method and the FIMing technique.

I’m only up to page 20 in this thread so I’m sure there is much more here that I will be copying also. I am copying and pasting to Word, the stuff that I intend to follow as a grow journal and I have already saved a bunch!

These are my tentative plans, unless you all see a problem with them.

I already have a 300W UFO LED that is supposed to be great for vegging but too weak for flowering and am going to get (2) 6 lamp T5 HO (6500 ea 78,000 lumens total) for vegging and put all 3000 blooming bulbs in for flower while still running the LED.

I will be running a top mounted 4 inch carbon filter & fan for 10 minutes every ½ to 1 hour depending on heat & odor.

I'm thinking that it will draw any heat /odor out and the floor mounted, filtered intake should draw cool air in and keep the 48 deep by 57 wide by 54 tall cabinet cool inside.

I will also have a small fan running all the time. Hopefully, the temps should run about right (70-75 max) for nute absorption. I will also have a 5 gal bucket of water in there for humidity if needed.

All walls will be covered with 2 mil Mylar and all DWC tubs will be covered as well with the silvery sound/heat insulation for car soundproofing or some other cover.

As I progress, if you all wouldn’t mind my dumb questions, I will keep you apprised. Thanks again for this GREAT thread, I really appreciate all the time you have given to us all!!! S

yea.. that would be plenty fine.... i wont lie.. didnt check the link.. i meant to before i hit respond so i will after this.. if i change my mind ill edit this post... but just keep the MH in the middle.. the 2x 600s on the outside.. and keep em low as possible...

keep the nutes how you have them until you have the photos moved over.. then the first week of 12/12 move them to 50% bloom nutes.. then 100% the following week...

i hated having to chop early.. but i couldnt do anything about it... im bummed.. but the flowers are still FIRE!! i always take a couple samples when im chopping and dry them out in my oven (glass pan... 200 degrees... door opened.. takes anywhere from an hour to two hours depending on the flower size.. i keep em small of course).. smoked a few samples last night and was knocked the fuck out... should be sick when they dry.. anywyas.. point being.. if you let them go a little longer, or as long as you can as long as the photo girls have space, you'll be good... be prepared tho to spend at least 2 to 3 hours a plant trimming.. it takes forever it seems...

hey man, what type of screen type material should I get for chop day? As in, what to rest them on, on the chop table? And where to grab somethin like that. Craft store, silk screen supply, etc.

if you want to hang the branches you can do that.. either run string along the inside of a closet, or a large refreidgerator box.. something like that... (if you use the box cut a few air holes in it to allow air to move through it and keep a fan blowing air around it to remove moisture from inside the box)... then you can tie them or use clothes pins to attack them to the line...

if you want to lay them down, which is fine too, you want to make sure the material is breathable... obviously you know that, hence the screen.. the best thing i have found is just window screen.. like the shit they use for bay windows or whatever to make screens for them.. lol im fuckin stoned now too bro... anyways... ya. i think you get it..

i would stick away from the black nylon.. if its what i think it is it wont allow enough air movement around the flowers.. and you'll risk mold growth then...

One reason that I like the DWC for my first indoor grow is that if I screw up and do something stupid, I'll only kill one plant instead of all of them. I know me, I've seen it done, lol.

not a bad idea...

ive never used them so i dont know how reputable they are.. if they are immature seeds though you may just want to get ahold of the company and tell them.. try to get some new seeds sent.. immature seeds will lead to a shakey grow... too many problems can arise that wont be your fault... but it will be discouraging all the same..

I will be growing 4 to 6 plants for personal use in 2 or 3, 18 gallon totes using DWC. I will be using rockwool cubes and hydroton although I don’t know what size pellets to get yet.

if you can do it i would stick with single sites for each plant... easier to change out the water.. easier to move around if needed... plus you can custom feed each plant if you want...

I will be copying your use of GN nutes and use the 3 part system.

good nutes for sure.. let me know if you have any questions with them...

good choices there as well..

These are my tentative plans, unless you all see a problem with them.

sounds good to me bro...

I already have a 300W UFO LED that is supposed to be great for vegging but too weak for flowering and am going to get (2) 6 lamp T5 HO (6500 ea 78,000 lumens total) for vegging and put all 3000 blooming bulbs in for flower while still running the LED.

the more light the better.. especially when using t5s and/or leds...

I will be running a top mounted 4 inch carbon filter & fan for 10 minutes every ½ to 1 hour depending on heat & odor.
should be plenty fine... wont have much heat to worry about at all.. and if temps are cooler smells will stay down too.

I'm thinking that it will draw any heat /odor out and the floor mounted, filtered intake should draw cool air in and keep the 48 deep by 57 wide by 54 tall cabinet cool inside.

you dont need to filter the air going in as much as you do the air going out.. also.. you want more air leaving than entering.. positive air pressure will raise temps...

I will also have a small fan running all the time. Hopefully, the temps should run about right (70-75 max) for nute absorption. I will also have a 5 gal bucket of water in there for humidity if needed.
temps dont mess so much with nute absorbtion as they do transpiration (plant breathing) and water intake.. but those temps are perfect so...

All walls will be covered with 2 mil Mylar and all DWC tubs will be covered as well with the silvery sound/heat insulation for car soundproofing or some other cover.

thats fine to insulate the res's.. just make sure the res temps stay at 75 or below.. you should also get an air stone/pump for each DWC, or a large one you can run to them all.. more air = much happier plants.. they will use the oxygen in the water pretty quickly...

As I progress, if you all wouldn’t mind my dumb questions, I will keep you apprised. Thanks again for this GREAT thread, I really appreciate all the time you have given to us all!!! S

of course.. just stop by and ask away

here they are my brotha.

pH is still plumittin down to 4.8 daily. & I'm added a fresh gal of distilled.

But thinkin i'm gonna go ahead & change out all drippers & start flushin this weekend. maybe snag some of the top nastys mid week, and let the bottoms finish thru next weekend.

lemme know what ya think

Oh yeah, i set up a light to try & take better pics, yet again.

Didn't so much accomplish that feat so much, as it allowed me to see that them chickies are very close to bout 50% red pistils.

They aren't receeding in though, still pokin out in all their glory.

But thats what made me decide to start flushin.

whatcha think?

photo girls are gonna need a good home by next weekend too.

thanks brotha

Hey Sam, I am wondering what type of coco I can use in a flood and drain, I am struggling with the stg media and have switched to rockwool for starter cubes, but need something else to nest the cubes in and it seems coco is the new hot deal.. Tried perlite but it is a mess.

Would I also need hydroton?

good luck! stop back with any questions..

you can use any type of coco coir.. i personally like sunleaves peice coir.. its already prepped and shredded... ready to go from the bag...

you can mix in hydroton if you want.. but you dont have to.. i am using pure coco coir and have great results...

or you can go with straight hydroton... excellent results with that as well...

i may check out and have heard good things about sunshine mix #4 as well....

high there, i was just wondering what happens to plants if you add too high of h202 content or if the h2o2 is still decomposing wen you water the plants. I added 1 tsp of h2o2 to 1 gall. of water, i let it sit for 20 min. or so then watered the girls now the leaves are starting to yellow i dont know if its from this or perhaps something else?

So I gave them all full strength nutes (2 tsp, 2tsp, 3tsp) like you said. About a day or 2 later one of them started getting black spots on its biggest leaves up the middle of individual leaf blades which I would imagine are nutrient burn, although it is only happening on the 2nd tallest plant (no problems with smallest which is like a foot shorter). I did ppm tests and the runoff from the full strength feeding was 1660 for 2 plants and 1720 for the largest (I also added a 1/4 tsp of super thrive and a tsp of earth juice pH up to each plants gallon supply). Today I watered with plain tap and the runoff was 470, 456, and 378 (and should drop 1 or 200 more if i water with nothing added in a few days). What I am wondering is if you think I should go full strength nutes every other feeding like Fox Farm recommends, or should I do something like this *full nutes, plain, 1/2 nutes, plain, full nutes* http://www.foxfarmfertilizer.com/soilfeed.pdfAnd also how far into flowering before I should cut back on nutes? I hear people say a week or 2 but I believe earlier you said you stop feeding the last 2 or 3 watering?

*** Well they aren't really black spots they are brown as if they dried/burnt, still only on the one plant

Thanks Sam, I will rep when allowed...

Ok. I have been reading through the coco thread, and it seems that coco "nuts" on there to great degree, have made coco complicated. I know from reading this thread from the start that you take a very simple approach that gets results. So...

Do you use nutes that are designed for coco only?

Do you use h2o2?

Do you treat coco as anything other then an inert media?

I mean that coco thread is wack as far as do and dont's that seem to be so incredibly specialized.

I believe you do not use nutes that are coco specialized, and you do use h202. Am I wrong?

I fucked up with the stg shit and it sent many a seed to an untimely end, so I would like to at least get the plants I have now in rockwool through the grow. Before reading the coco thread I thought coco was the answer, but now I am in doubt. Also most of the peeps on that thread are not running pumps or recirculating systems, and they seem to be soil growers who turned to coco. I know you have run the gamut of soil to coco and don't have a position other then your experience and openmindedness.

WTF? Can I run flood to drain with coco and general hydro nutes?

( I know you answered this before but that thread threw me and need confirmation again.)

Thanks man...

h202 does a couple things... first it adds extra dissolved oxygen to the water.. which is good... but it also kills everything.. that includes beneficial microbes that live at the roots.. these microcrobes are essential to have a healthy root system and plant... unless you have some sort of root rot of something i wouldnt use h202 in soil...

you would greatly benefit from using some sort of root inoculant to reintroduce beneficials to the soil and roots..

now your issue is like not caused from that.. that was just a good bit of info you should have.. its more than likely the onset of an N deficiency... how old is your plant?? are you using nutrients at all??

oh... also.. why were you using the h202??

So I gave them all full strength nutes (2 tsp, 2tsp, 3tsp) like you said. it could be slight nute burn.. but that is sorta a good thing... now you know what their feeding threash hold is... so next time cut back just slightly and all should be good...

as far as feeding goes, you want to feed as much as possible as long as things are happy.. so go full strength unless you need to cut back...

right now i am harvesting plants i didnt flush at all and i cant tell at all.. they are as good as any i have flushed.. so my opinion on flushing is it isnt needed... thats just my opinion though.. i would at least go full strength up until the last 1 or 2 waterings.. if you only do 1 watering just flush the soil a little extra.. but if you want to compare flush all but 1 plant.. feed that one plant all the way to chop.. and see if you can tell a differnce..

i dont use nutes designed for coco... in fact i use so many different nutes its crazy... i dont believe you need special nutes for coco..

i dont use h202.. i have air stones for each of my res's for aeration... the h202 would kill the beneficials that we want to have alive... only time i ever recommened using h202 is if you have algae or mold... but then you want to use something organic to reintroduce beneficials...

i dont treat coco any different than any other medium i use... i feed the same.. i dont do anything different... i use a little lower ph now tho.. i try to stay around 5.5 to 5.8.. but it pretty well stays there anyways.. and the plants love it..

yea.. you can flood to drain with coco using gh nutes.. no prob there at all... plus the gh micro is great to use for the coco since it has extra cal/mag in it.. which can often be in def's using coco...

PS
I have no interest in "organics" just good pot to smoke.
if you dont want to use organics thats fine.. i use a combo of both organic and chemical... i would HIGHLY recommend using botanicare's liquid karma at least.. it has a TON of great shit in it.. but mainly it will help to build up root zone beneficials.. ive mentioned them a few times.. but basically they are in charge of keeping the roots cleaned, getting food broke down, basically they are "farmers" in a lose sense of the term.. they take care of a lot at the roots.. and happy roots equal very happy plants...

i dont use nutes designed for coco... in fact i use so many different nutes its crazy... i dont believe you need special nutes for coco..

i dont use h202.. i have air stones for each of my res's for aeration... the h202 would kill the beneficials that we want to have alive... only time i ever recommened using h202 is if you have algae or mold... but then you want to use something organic to reintroduce beneficials...

i dont treat coco any different than any other medium i use... i feed the same.. i dont do anything different... i use a little lower ph now tho.. i try to stay around 5.5 to 5.8.. but it pretty well stays there anyways.. and the plants love it..

Thanks Sam, I had you confused with Al B Fuct on the h2o2 thing. I am using Vita Grow dry ferts for this grow plainly cause they were cheap (bagseed) and here are the details:

Part A SuperMicro 4-14-24
N- 4%
Phosphate- 14%
Potash- 24%
Mg- 3%
Boron- .03%
Copper- .03%
Iron- .3% .012% chelated Iron
Manganese- .15%
Molybdenum- .002%
Zinc- .03%
Cobalt- .002%
Chlorine- Not more then 2%

Part B SuperFastGrow 17-0-0:
N-17%
15% Nitrate Nitrogen
2% Urea Nitrogen
Calcium- 17%

Can I use these with a decent chance of success? This is a grow where I am just trying to get a system up and going. I am only able to add about $250-$300 a month, and have spent $600 so far. This month I will be adding this Fan due to having gotten a 6" inline fan that just aint gonna cut it (more like a duct booster type fan):wall: but it will do nicely in the future when I plan to add a 600 hps air cooled (not for like 2 or 3 mos from now) right now I have a 400 hps. I will have 2 flowering chambers with first half under the 400 and finishing under the 600. This month besides the fan and filter I will be building a flood and drain and getting an ec meter and that takes the months budget.
About the Fan , do I set this up to pull through the filter or can I set it to blow out through the filter? Hopefully the latter due to space constraints, as I am venting into an upper floor closet. As I told you before this is a long term project for me, and right now the most pressing issues are airflo and grow media <shakes fist at stg>:wall:

I will try to get around and rep some peeps so I can rep you again. Thanks man...

hey simpson i got bad news, i had six plants two different strains all turned out to be hermie, can you PLEASE tell me what caused this i can see it in one or two plants but the whole lot and two different stains bubba kush and church i grew the church b4 and i had no problem i did the research on the bubba kush and it has a very low hermie rate i need your in put!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi im a new grower, actually working on my first plant. Your info here has helped alot so thank you. But now i wanted to get a experiended growers opinion on a little problem ive ran into. My plants still in the vegetive stage and is growing well except i seem to be experiencing slightly yellowed leave edges and the top new leaves are almost white at the edges. My research makes me think it is a iron defeciencey because its locked from a 7+ pH soil. Im going to test it tomorrow to see but just thought id get your opinion. Oh here are some pics of my plant and the white edged leaves.

stg inserts suck.. i was saved from using them.. almost wasted the money on them myself... sorry you got stuck using them..

the nutes might be ok.. veg for sure.. its just flowering im a little worried about.. can you get some sort of actual flowering nute?? just want to make sure they are getting what they need..

set the fan up to pull rather than push.. if it pushes and there are any leaks in the duct it will cause air to leak from that hole.. but if its pulling all the leaks just become additional exhaust holes...

hey simpson i got bad news, i had six plants two different strains all turned out to be hermie, can you PLEASE tell me what caused this i can see it in one or two plants but the whole lot and two different stains bubba kush and church i grew the church b4 and i had no problem i did the research on the bubba kush and it has a very low hermie rate i need your in put!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there are only a few ways to get hermies..

1) it could be genetic.. are they breeder seeds or bag seeds?? unless you know they came from a reputable breeder you always run the risk of potential problems.. even with breeder seeds there is still a small margin for error.. or if they were fem'd, but done the old way (using stress to create a hermie and using that pollen to pollinate a female... that will lead to potential hermies as well.. where as using chemicals to induce pollen sacs wont.. thats another story though) then they could easily carry the hermie trait...

2) light stress or other stress.. light stress is the most common cause of hermie... light leaks during flowering, inconsistant lighting schedules, ect, can all lead to hermies.. if i had to guess this would be the most likely cause since it happened to them all..

can you tel me a little about how things went during your grow??

you can still flower hermies.. just pull the sacs as they grow out and you'll still get good flowers..
