im sory shack but it the therm. is the case for all these issues i may need to have a laugh
i plan on facepalming and shaking my head in upset.. then having a laugh. shortly after a slap across your face sir. just playing bro. i'm convinced at this point. its been splashed by some of my hydro equipment, and no amount of leaving the door open or ventilation has caused it to change... we'll see... we'll see....

When temps get hot in my room, I use blocks of dry ice (melts with no mess, and super cold) and I also take empty clean gallon milk jugs and fill em up with water. Then throw em in the deep freezer. They come out like a solid block. You can cut the plastic away so you are left with just ice. Put large block of ice in large bowl/bucket. Large deep dish pans work best. Then use a small fan to blow over the block of ice. Bam you have redneck A/C ! Works decent. I am lucky enough now, temps are coming down as we get closer to winter.

so here is the situation..

i got a new digital thermometer, one that gives two temps, "indoor" which is where the gauge is stuck to the wall in the closet, which is reading steady at 75.6 and "outdoor" via a remote unit inside the tent which reads steady 61.6!
i also picked up a standard dial thermometer like you would use outside, which is reading 90!! my original thermometer reads 82 (big shock)
i'm convinced now the temp is pretty consistent in the 70-85 range, so i'm done fucking with it, temps are under control!! i'm convinced it was a bad read, still don't know why each one is so different.. ugh! i hate inaccuracies!

Just found the thread and read through from start to end. Brilliant Read. +Rep for Shackle, dope and dub! :D Literally listened to every word you guys wrote with such enthusiasm.

The only question i have is; Dope, you mentioned lst'ing to make a canopy, I understand LST'ing to an extent but im not too sure what you mean by placing a sheet 2" above it. Could you explain it all to me or any one else? Shackle , dope?

I'm planning on starting my grow soon, and this DIY grow cupboard is exactly what i need to see! Got the soil, CFL, pots, nutrients all coming soon and i too are moving from hydro to soil :)
I plan on using a 300W CFL to start off with as its really hard to acquire low wattage cfl's where i am.

But yeh, if anyone could help with the question please do, its something i really want to try seeing as i have 12 seeds sitting here waiting tobe started :)

Glad it all worked out for ya bro, cant wait to see the finals. Will be constantly checking for updates :)

how many feet of the panda poly did you use/ need/order?
oh wow.. haha i didn't realize i hadn't mentioned that. i got 12' (by 10') and uh.. i have a shitload lying around now lol. all told probably about 6-7' to wrap around, and about 2X4' to cover the top and bottom. i laid the skeleton on its side and used zip-ties to attach it to the poles, on at the top and one at the bottom, rolled it to the next side, repeat process. once i made my way around the unit, i used a strip of duct tape to seal the edge. thanks, i forgot to post that!!

i had picked up some multi-level inverters (3.5V - 6V - 12V) in hopes of speed control, plugged it in and nothing happened. i ended up just using lamp cord and plug them in directly, and they work great! good question!

glad you enjoyed the read, see you're relatively new to the forum. Welcome to RIU!! you're gonna have to ask Dopewear, i'm not sure what you're asking. He has a link to his thread in his signature (Grow Cabinet, i think it says) 300W CFL?! is that actual wattage or equivalent wattage? Sounds like an awesome bulb!! What seeds you got lying around? You have a thread to look at? I recommend my design if you need to construct a space, lol, but truly all things considered it was very simple and relatively cheap to construct. Good luck to you and happy growing!

haha sorry bro, drifted off onto some other forum.

Yeh i used to use RUI daily but then i lost my grow and stopped growing alltogether.
If dope/budD does come around and read what i put then im basically asking'

Q: How do i do a lst with a canopy like he previously suggested to you?

Btw, how did you ensure complete air tightness? Like, do you tape the mylar all round ?

I'll reply in the morning because im off to bed, but im yet to start a grow journal yet but i recon i might start one tomorrow now you've prompted me :) To show the cupboard im using and any suggestions you might have for me being the main man yourself! :P

It'd be nice to make some acquaintances on here seeing as at the moment, i know zilch :P

im not sure whats going on but something about a even canopy and such? its easy to get. do your typical LST and just keep the branches tied down to the same height so its all even. itll fill in through the veg and flower period. all you need it string/rope and something to secure it. and just pull your plant gently to get your desired LST'd even canopy. dont know if any of tht makes sense im so baked hahah lov you shack!

hay Rusty your cab looks like a mini version of mine. I got a 4x2x6 wire rack and extended it to a 7.5 tall. If your are super paranoid about light leaks you should cut some of your extra poly in about 6 in strips and get some double sided tape and make some light baffles on both sides like one of those fancy mountaineering sleeping bags. If your are concerned about heat you could get some lauan or masonite cut 2 pieces to fit the open area of your closet run 1x2 around the outsides and along the side where your closet doors are you could just put a lil spacer every so often and place some in the middle to give it random support then cut a hole and put a 120 mm pc case fan to suck air through your scoop and blow it into the tent.

I go to radio shack to pick up a fan and i'm looking for a 120VAC 4" PC fan, because everything i read about it, it comes with a little power supply/cord.. only they don't have it. they have some DC fans comparable size, and AC on that doesn't come with power cables.

My question to RIU.. do i need a power cord of any kind other than two conductor lamp cord? If i plug one of these straight into the wall, using no sort of power converter/inverter BS block of plastic with a resistor in it (i.e. cell phone charger) is the fan going to blow up?

The Radioshack A-Hole tried to sell me on this ridiculous idea to buy a PC power supply and some PC fans ready to plug into the power supply, but thats just my cost up an extra 30-50 dollars bare minimum.

Your thoughts RIU!!

take them the part number or whatever and they can see if any other store has it and they can send them straight to your house for free. i have done this with some special breadboards and a couple of infrared LED's. That is if the store guy actually cares about helping im lucky enough to have a geek that works at our local RadioShack so he is into all the stuff i was building. any how i figure if you asked they would be happy to look for the exact part they have online.

Here are a couple of my current LST projects:

Mini Skunk #1:

Large Skunk #1:

Also I want to set the record straight on fans you can use and how you can use them.

How to use a (12VDC) PC cooling fan:

12vdc fans are used in computers, I use them when I need a small amount of cooling, a 120vac fan is king. I use an old phone charger that puts out about 7vdc and wire it to my 12vdc fan. Plug in the charger and your fan is on.

DO NOT WIRE THESE DIRECTLY TO THE WALL UNLESS YOU WANT A FIRE!

How to use a AC cooling fan:

BE SURE YOU HAVE THIS FAN OR ANOTHER 120VAC FAN

This one is wired to a fan speed control knob just as if it were wired to a ceiling fan. Direct 120vac from the wall on a cord.

Rusty, can you identify this plant:

(Here is a hint, it grows in Texas.)

Oh yeah, decided to drop some knowledge on you here... CLF soda can reflectors that work very well...

hmmm no i can't identify that plant.. clover? i really have no idea! i went for the 120VAC fans and i'm SUPER happy with things, i used two conductor lamp cord with 2 prong plugs already attached to the end of the wire, and plug mine into a power strip. they work AWESOME! i'm even OK with not having speed control. things are kicking ass, i'm looking forward to growing some LST'd Lemon Skunk and Great White Shark. Sunday, November 29, 2009 seeds will be going into a damp paper towel and on their way to crackin!

The plant is a blue bonnet, your state flower, they don't grow up here we had some seeds sent from home to grow about 6 months ago. Gotta love yankee land. :( I'm home sick unless you cannot tell.

Yeah the fans work great at full speed as well. I am just pointing out that a 120vac fan will never work with low voltage dc, vice-verse a 12vdc fan will catch fire on 120vac circuit.

what i'm trying to figure out... those fan speed controllers are 3 conductor, and the fan itself is 2 conductor.... did you wire this fan directly into a wall box for power? or use lamp cord at one end of the wiring?

FINALLY! a good baseline for temp testing. all gauges read bout 71.6 in the grow space, closet temp was reading right 70. Running the system, fans on and lights on, time to see about getting some REAL and consistent numbers, instead of the jumpy BS i had the last test (i.e. 100 degrees here, 68 degrees there, and 82 degrees elsewhere) will report back later today.
