400 volt? WTF? You are in the UK? What are you tapping power off some local electric rail line? Trainspotting again. Blimey.

Wish we took this tech seriously here in the States. It would save an incredible amount of energy.

Nationalizing the rails would do this country a lot of good. It's not like it's not already being done; public highways, public airports, public seaports. Rail is the only one left that isn't- and we're definitely suffering for it.

Didn't you know that DE HPS operates at 400V output to the lamp? Yet another reason they're a lot more efficient when running on high input voltage circuits.
Yes. I had forgotten. I thought some DEs even run at 480 v? I know people have said that you save energy runny at 240 V versus 120 V as far as amp but others have said it does not make a difference.

By the way, magnetic ballasts require that you change the back of the ballast. Do digitals auto detect and adjust?

The advantage of using higher voltage is that smaller wires can be used and you can still have lower heat losses in your wires. Problem is that 400V will kill you much quicker than 120V will.

Yeah it is that second part of higher volatagethat scares me.

The guy I worked for at GE once got hit by 12,800V at the top of a power pole. He survived by some miracle and spent 9 months in the hospital recovering.

One reason I don't like series wiring DIY setups is the amount of DC voltage used in them. With todays diodes its just unnecessary, IMO. Parallel with low voltage drivers is safer and just as reliable if put together right.

Perhaps I was unclear; The 400V is OUTPUT, between ballast and the lamp itself. Input power is still the usual 120/240V, and I'm sure there are other options for the electrical systems in other countries. I'm sure 240V is marginally more efficient.

Most modern digital ballasts automatically detect the input power and adjust. I'm not certain about DE systems as I've never used them but I would be surprised if they didn't.

Yes, magnetic ballasts need to be rewired internally. The exceptions are those with separate 120V and 240V plugs. They're quickly going the way of the dinosaurs due to inefficiency.

Wait so can these meanwell drivers run off 240? Or are there drivers for these QBs for 240?? Cuz my breaker box is only about 10 feet away from my grow room and i have no issue running 240 over there if its gonna be more efficient. I only have two 304s on the way rt now, but will prob have 4 if not 6 eventually.

Its no biggy to order a diff driver.

My Meanwell drivers will work on anything from 100V to 277V. It should say right on the driver. The higher the voltage they're plugged into, generally the more efficiently they work.

No doubts there, cant believe i didn't think about it though it may be minimal on smaller scale. I think that the daily startup is less stressfull on all parts involved and where the biggest benefit might be

Like a 3 phase air conditioner starts up alot smoother than its brother on residential 240.

In theory running these on 240 should extend the life of the driver and diodes out, just a wittle bit.

Yes the HLG series drivers will work from 100 to 277 VAC. The efficiency gained at relatively low amperages (like the 600W and below that we generally use) is really negligible. You don't really see much efficiency improvement until you get close to max on the 120 circuit - 1800W. If your pushing close to that much power then it is advised to move to a 240V circuit.

Next round getting ready, 2 Purple Cactus, a Gods Gift, in the bottom right an Auto Tahoe Alien (these all popped out of the starter blocks between Aug 15-20th, about 5-6 weeks old). In the blocks just starting is a Grand Daddy purple and a Bruce Banner.

Hey folks! I've been refraining from posting all the questions I've had since I last posted a few weeks ago. Been finding alot of answers in a few different threads and also on IG through HLG's page. I was actually a few clicks away from ordering a 550 and also a 65 and just happened to see a post about an upcoming sale on the 550.

So anyhow, my latest question that I can't find any answer for is how big of a plant can I expect to put under this light? I've read about the diffused lighting but another grower/LED guy that ive watched over the years told me today that QBs seem to be more suited for short plants in the 2-3 ft range. I WILL SAY THAT HE DIDNT SAY FOR ME TO TAKE THAT AS THE GOSPEL. Just his guess...

If I put one of these in a 4x4 tent, how much vertical height should take them to and still expect packed colas top to bottom?

Btw, I realize that training can help alot for light penetration. Just wanna know what to realistically expect in a tent with 6+ft of height space. Thanks again and sorry for typos.

More points of light + reflective tent = light penetration, I've had leaf turning and pointing to the tent walls. @ttystikk grows some monsters.
Thanks! I should've thought to check out @ttystikk before. Don't know why it didn't dawn on me to do so, lol.

I was also thinking to take some advice from one of my mentors' and line my tent with mylar. I know tents already have inner lining but it doesn't really measure up to the actual roll of good paper (if that makes sense). How's the reflection in your tent? Is it the dull mylar coating or the shiny? My tents both have the basic one.

Trying to find @ttystikk journal right now. Could you please tell me the name of your journal also...if you have one? I think I saw a post from you earlier today talking about your set up. Would like to check it out of you don't mind. Thanks.

No Journal but I did post a lot in the club Quantum board page. My sig has a link when I was in week 5 of flower while testing the QBs. I was one of the first on here to order them and start growing with them. Many people on here shunned the Quantum boards and thought they were nothing more than glorified diode led. I understood right away that they were COBs just spread out.

Sorry to be a PITA but there's no signature line that shows the link you mentioned. Could just be my phone or me not knowing how to navigate this format. Thank you though ✌.
