Call yourself out..What was your biggest mistake??

ohhh.. i totally forgot my best newb mistake with my last grow... i had gotten all of these small jiffy pots.. the tiny ones that look like an egg carton basically, and a bag of jiffy mix.. i germed all of my seeds, making sure not to get them mixed up and whatever.. i proceded to place the germed seeds in the jiffy pots and soil.. than a couple of hours later, i decided that i didn't like how dry the soil was since i didn't really water it in at all.. so, my dumbass just got a board and dumped all of the soil and the seeds on it, and searched for all of the seeds that i had all marked out in each little pocket of the jiffy pots.. now mind you, i just had a huge pile of soil on a board, and really had no way of telling what seeds had come out of which pot.. so i managed to find all of me seeds and replanted them after i rewatered the soil to my liking.. i managed to kill a few of the seedlings from underwatering, and my whole grow i thought that i was growing a completly different strain than the one that i was..
i felt the fool when i finally figured out that i wasn't growing the strain that i had thought that i was.. it was sooo dumb of me to just dump them all at once.. anyone with half a brain would of just seperated the pots and dumped them one at a time to avoid doing what i did and getting all of my strains mixed up.. uggh..
but that is really the beauty of making mistakes in life.. this time i made sure to germ each strain in a seperate paper towel, marked each one, and potted each strain one at a time, and clearly marked each pot with the strain in it.. lesson learned..
That sounds like something I would do when I am high. Nice system you have now... experienced lessons are priceless. It's amazing how when we hear mistakes we remember most of them for a while, but when we actually make it ourselves, we never forget it. lol Great story and I will make sure I label papertowels now. :-P

I came home drunk, fell into my light setup and broke 8 42w cfl's on the top of two flowering plants. I had to tape a drinking straw to the end of the vacuum to get the broken glass cleaned up.

yeah, thanks raiderman.. i guess some people would say that i am getting a little carried away labeling the towels and all, but i was never so embaressed as i was when i finally figured out that i wasnt growing the strain that i thought that i was...
and you are so right about learning more from our own mistakes than from reading about others.. i could read that ten people have made the same mistake, and don't get me wrong, i would pick up on it, but not in the same way that i would from making the same mistake once for myself.. i think there is sometihng to be said about living actual experiences and not just reading about them.. i always like to say how i could read a book about performing a surgery, but to actually do it is a completely different thing all together.. the sites and sounds and smells of an experience stay with me alot longer than some words on a page..
this is a great thread, and i love everyone's honesty and willingness to share with others what they have done in their inexperience..

My biggest mistakes?

One was starting off in Miracle Grow soil. :wall:
Two was rushing the grow, so I failed to have a GOOD grow closet set up.
Third was/is harvesting early, but most of that is due to my bagseed plants sprouting bananas late in flowering. :-(

I also purposefully chopped the two tops off of one of my mom plants that was already previously topped. I just wanted to see what would happen, lol. The mom had about 1 1/2-2 months to recover, but it never really did. It didn't seem sure where to focus its growth energy after that. I have her flowering right now, and for a 30 inch tall plant, it's going to have a pitifull yield lol. :bigjoint:But my other mom is in flowering with it now, and it'll make up the difference. :blsmoke:

Up next is getting my hands on some good genetics.

I hope you atleast had a good time partying before that disaster.:eyesmoke: Did you smash the plants?

I totally agree. It is cool how everyone is willing ot share their mistakes..so hopefully we don't do the same thing.

Thanks for sharing that one. I didn't know you couldn't top a mother twice either.:-o

being the whole hearted generous person i am, letting my room mates mother stay with us for a month :(
OUCH! Mother-in-laws - what do you do?:wall: My mother-in-law just tries to find things to ick apart when she is at my house. She will be here for Christmas and the girls will be about 8 weeks into flower..so I am already stressing over it.

Well I made another mistake..shocker!
I was adjusting one of the oscilating fans and leaned against a plant. I snapped (almost) off a top of one of the side branches..10 days into flower so I basically broke off the pre-flower less than an inch from the top. This one was already 8" above the scrog screen. damn it! anyway I wrapped some tp around it with some tape..very lightly!!
Anyway, I am sure it will heal, but how it effects the bud we will have to see.:-|

So I thought I would update this stem repair. -- It healed up fine and can't tell it was broke. Now remember this stem was dangling..so it is amazing how these girls can repair.:bigjoint:

Hey thanks for sharing. It's amazing how we put so much time and effort into making things just right and then we overlook something so simple. I feel your pain Bro.:-( No lessons learned, like the ones we experience :-P

LOL I felt the same way when I was first read the nute schedules.. The whole ml, tbl spoons, liter, gal.. it does take a minute to get it all down.

I have bad habit of overfeeding.Plants thrive when underfed, overfeeding stunts plants...peace
This is where I am still learning for sure. I have been feeding at 75% of nute schedule until this this week .. I gave a full dose and the nute schedule is stepping up too...I noticed a little yellowing on the tops..I think I'll go back to the 75% dose. :-?

My biggest mistake, and I'm still doing it, is trying to grow too many different strains for the limited area that I have, Instead of dialing in just a couple of good strains. I read a strain review and go " gee I want that strain, its the latest and greatest" And then I order the seeds, or procure the clones. So I end up with a bunch of 'decent' smoke, but no "great" smoke, as I didn't take my time to do it right, or take the time to learn what a particular strain needs to make it the super duper go getter that I am ultimately after.

Also learning to have patience, after all we are watching grass grow. I've many times put vegging plants into flower a couple of weeks earlier than I should have, resulting in decreased yeilds, because of the up and comming vegging plants taking over my grow room. I need to learn a little self disapline and get a reliable system going, and a game plan that works with my strains, rather than just throwing a bunch of plants into the pots and hoping for the best.

My biggest mistake? not researching the strains sufficiantly. Some strains do not take well to fimming and topping, yeild wise, and others you can't top enough. People that have grown the same strains I am attempting to grow offer some good advice on what they have found works good, so why don't I pay attention? Some plants grow well indoors, but would be a disaster outdoors ( I tried growing some blackberry kush outdoors, not a good thing to see).

Not going with the best genetics, and trying to get as good of results as the 'big boys'.

I found some red HID's designed for outside landscape illumination. Really proud of this find that seems to have been overlooked by the community. I purchased 3600 watts of these bulbs without a full test and relit my budroom with them.

The red did look a little off but I knew this was going to be killer.

It was.

Violet and yellow together look reddish, kinda. I could not save any of the crop. The plants gave me plenty of warning all along, but tunnel vision had me seeing what I wanted until it was too late.

I built a full time test room for 1/2 the cost of the lost crop, but I still feel somewhat retarded for killing all those plants.
