My biggest noob mistake was buying a soil ph meter, one of those 3 in 1 meters that the ph is off by like 2.5. i was watering with ph'd water to 6 but it was actually under 4. then i flushed with water that was ph'd to 6 but was actually over 8.5. i went out and got the general hydroponics test kit and found out after i massacred 2 of my 6 bubba kush plants, the other 4 are struggling. wanted to shoot myself in the face because i had ph issues with my last grow as well, took me this long to figure it out and it was only 7.95 for the right test kit. downgraded my status back to noob after that. unbelievable.

Hey, I am sure that was hard to admit, but I am sure your not alone.
Yeah, and you know one of my biggest mistakes was listening to those old stoner's tales about growing weed. I should have known better because I used to grow mushrooms before and learned that people who haven't done it have NO fucking clue what they are talking about! People will say things like, "oh you just put a pile of cow shit in a jar and grow the mushrooms in that." Suuuuure. At least I didn't drive a nail through the stems of my plants--what the hell was that supposed to do, anyways? Stupid, stupid shit.

This is the part that made me shed a tear because I have been there. You don't want to smoke the asschwag because, well...it tastes like working donkey ass BUT IT IS herb that you grew and makes you feel all good inside, until you start coughing that is.
Yeah, and you know it didn't look so bad, but if I didn't get the seeds from a sack I would've wondered if it was actually weed. The taste was so weird I kept some around for like six months and just smoked it when I had dry spells. Awful :(

Wow! You learn something new every day.

I bought one of those retarded things too! FUUUUCK THOSE THINGS! I couldn't even tell when the batteries were working or what setting it was on because the damn thing would just say neutral most of the time. I usually donate all of my old crap to goodwill, but I just threw that thing away because nobody should be coerced into the idea that those things would work worth a damn.

I just remembered this one- I have switchable ballasts and changed from MH to HPS bulbs..turned the lights back on and the lights looked they were warming up..just barely any light comming off of them... Anyway it was 20 minutes later that I figured out I had to switch the ballasts setting to hps. :dunce: Brilliant!!

In Jan 2008, I was doing my very first grow here, and asked if there was anyway to speed it up.
some newb told me to add a little Miracle grow to the tank. We had some so I did. my plants were about 6 inches tall and within a day, ALL the leaves fell off all of them.

I hate Miracle Grow ................and I still don't take any advise from newbs ever again.

a few mistake I made...On my first ever grow with bagseed, I thought flushing was just a bunch of hype... :dunce: ... I gave the girls a heavy feeding like 3 days before harvest. When I first smoked some, It crackled like Rice Crispies, and tasted like I was chewing Aspirin. 3 Weeks of curing made it better but It still tasted like shit and smelled like hay. The second mistake I made was not keeping it simple and thinking I HAD to have foxfarms soil, hps lighting, vortex fans, pfff. I grow with CFL's and MG Organic soil and the buds are big and sweet tasting. My entire grow op is Walmart purchased.

The mistake I regret the most is not labeling my bulbs with dates so I would know when to toss them.

I killed a hooker in Kansas at a truck stop but when I dumped the body I forgot to take my cash back. BIG MISTAKE!

Putting new clones straight to 12/12 under a bunch of hot CFL's...and then to top it off...reading the Fox Farm Big Bloom label..."We recommend a first feeding using 1/2 cup per gallon of water, and follow with 4 tbsp per gallon every watering"...half the recommended strength was still ridiculously high...then "don't water until soil is dry 2" below soil line"....fine and dandy if you are growing in 5 gallon buckets...but little pots?...then there is the recent one...misplacing those 25 hijack seeds (I think the neighbor's cat may have had something to do with this one while we cat sat:wall:

Hmm...What stupid thing will I do next?

On my first grow, same mistake as a lot of newbs...improper equipment, the wrong lighting, interrupting the night cycle, etc.

i had my t5 hangine by a chain from the ceiling.. i was struggling to get the damn chain unhooked from itself, using both hands working it loose, and when i did finally get it undone, it came crashing down and smashed the plants on the one side of my garden.. not too much damage, but still felt the fool nonetheless..
but i think the biggest new b mistake i made the last grow was not having anykind of odor control... it is kinda hard to have a stealth grow when everyone who visited my place asked who ran over the skunk.. the place didn't smell like weed per se, but it definitely stunk up the place.. it was kinda hard to deny that i was up to no good when the whole place stunk to high heavens....

biggest mistake i ever made.... Overwatering, no odor control!!! (can be very dangerous)... did a half ass unplanned grow and didn't make a proper grow box/room... i remember being in the worst mood the week after i got back from a little vacation because i used too small of pots starting out and they only held enough water to last 2 days and i was gone for about 5 so when i got back they were shriveled up like prunes! thankfully it was only bagseed.... also, thinking everytime my plant didn't look right it needed more nutes! =( flushing is definitely overlooked by newbs...... thanks to all the folks at RIU i've managed to learn a hell of a lot about this hobby!

Wrong lighting, interrupting night cycle, causing uneccessary stress on the plant such as high temperatures, over-feeding, or not monitoring my pH levels causing nutrient lockouts and/or deficiencies, and not having any odor control.

Since then, I have built a very decent grow cabinet, lined it with mylar, bought a 400W HPS system, pay more attention to their needs as far as nutrients and pH goes.

I still have yet to control my odor. I have carbon sheets, but haven't put them up quite yet :) ...

I am with you on the odor issues. I am pushing through a DIY carbon filter and it is day 10 flower and the odor is starting, so I know it will be a battle later. I just put out several ONA cups, but will probably break down and buy a better filter.:?

So far Ive only had one grow and I must say my biggest mistake was pulling off fan leaves during veg, and pulling off buds during flowering, over watering and not being prepared for budworms and spider mites

ohhh.. i totally forgot my best newb mistake with my last grow... i had gotten all of these small jiffy pots.. the tiny ones that look like an egg carton basically, and a bag of jiffy mix.. i germed all of my seeds, making sure not to get them mixed up and whatever.. i proceded to place the germed seeds in the jiffy pots and soil.. than a couple of hours later, i decided that i didn't like how dry the soil was since i didn't really water it in at all.. so, my dumbass just got a board and dumped all of the soil and the seeds on it, and searched for all of the seeds that i had all marked out in each little pocket of the jiffy pots.. now mind you, i just had a huge pile of soil on a board, and really had no way of telling what seeds had come out of which pot.. so i managed to find all of me seeds and replanted them after i rewatered the soil to my liking.. i managed to kill a few of the seedlings from underwatering, and my whole grow i thought that i was growing a completly different strain than the one that i was..
i felt the fool when i finally figured out that i wasn't growing the strain that i had thought that i was.. it was sooo dumb of me to just dump them all at once.. anyone with half a brain would of just seperated the pots and dumped them one at a time to avoid doing what i did and getting all of my strains mixed up.. uggh..
but that is really the beauty of making mistakes in life.. this time i made sure to germ each strain in a seperate paper towel, marked each one, and potted each strain one at a time, and clearly marked each pot with the strain in it.. lesson learned..
