Dude there are so many activities, lifestyle choices, and hobbies that take ample amount of electricity. High powered audio systems, power tools, music equipment, multiple tv's, computers, and other appliances. Running an ac all summer long is believable in many regions. If you're in an apartment, just watch the noise and smell. If you were planning on moving into a new place and want to still grow, immediately start using close to the same electricity your grow op will use, especially when you aren't immediately planning on growing.

Not exactly.. Enormous usage flags aside, it depends on the size of the house, and what the ppl living in it do, as to how positive somebody looking at usage stats could be.. Some homes blow 20-30kWh/day on normal things like coffee pots, humidifiers, pc's, big-screens etc.. Eliminate/reduce that and you can run 2KW of lights to grow 6lb crops to sell to developmentally challenged school kids without using any more power than your neighbours..
Location is going to matter a bit.. Maybe in Vancouver the cop looks in the window and says "Aww, 400W.. How cute..", but other places are all about enforcement, and most ppl have enough plants under a single 400W light to go down on some serious charges!!
And beyond that, I shudder to think about how many millions the police would tell the media my relatively meager setup was worth.. There was recently a housefire on the news where they found remnants of a closet grow, and they were throwing $500k around, and defacto saying it was the cause (implying that was the only likely cause, and that fire inspectors would soon confirm that)..

No no, trust me, you can have a 13W cfl running, and if you're shooting your mouth off, or being stupid in any other way, the cops might come around..
A 400W hps light leak sticks out like a sore thumb a 1/4 mile away..

Trust a stupid person. don't think so little boy

My point is in most places, for most ppl growing is plain illegal no matter how you light them, and there are many stupid things a person can do to get caught..
I remember a guy who had the police knock on his door because his neighbour noticed a seedling in a cup on his window.. They cuffed him, started talking worst case scenarios, and looked around.. They didn't need a warrant claiming plain sight.. A few hours later they cut him free with a warning and left with a few items (plant, bong, and personal nugs)..
Hydro consumption is one thing not many of us need to consider regarding security.. All others are important regardless of the size of your grow..

I won't miss you when you're gone.. Feel free to keep seedlings in your window, and root-balls in your trash, and boxes of baggies in your storage room.. Don't worry about odour/light leaks at all..
And don't forget to brag about your growing to all your friends..
As long as you don't trip a power flag with MANY 1KW's you can't get in trouble..

lets go over just a few of your wild claims- "a 13 watt cfl can get you busted." "a 400 watt setup is enough to get raided," and last but not least, " a guy has a seedling on his windowsill and the cops bust in without a warrant, throw the dude in cuffs, and seize his parophanalia." Are you also "coolguy1"?? Cus he dissappeared, but it looks like you took over with the preposterous comments..

AGAIN, my point about the cfl, and the window sill is that even hobby plants are 'illegal', and by letter of the law in most places, ppl typically grow enough plants under a 400W hid to reach the next tier of possible charges/penalties.. My point all along is that unless extreme, hydro consumption isn't a good determining factor for LEO's.. If they see HPS light seeping through a crack its hard for them to know if its a 150W or a few kW.. That means its worth checking out, and once they open the can of worms, its open.. If you have 9 small plants under a 400W, they'll charge you to the maximum extent that the evidence warrants.. Your lawyer may be able to argue it down, but thats after the fact.. If your lawyer fails though cultivation with intent to traffic is a DAMN hefty charge in some places.. You're probably going to wish you had a few kW at that point, because you might end up just as deep for the 400W..
You need to understand the difference between the letter of the law, and the spirit of the law..
What those cops did was a good deterrent in the spirit of the law.. Obviously they just wanted to make a point.. The cup/plant was blatantly visible.. That constitutes cause.. A 'criminal offence' in 'plain sight' is actionable by police..
Lastly, location, location, location!! But even if you're in a place like BC, you're still going to be better off minding your P's and Q's..

he is right listen to his posts he is not saying youll get popped for a 400w or a bunch of cfls because of electrical bills you will not. he is saying if you do stupid things electrical use will not matter or be a factor when you get busted. bottom line dont do stupid obvious things when growing. peace.

Electric companies won't report spikes, the police obtain your bill when investigating you for more evidence to obtain a warrant.

Although, if your electrical use surges some outrageous amount, they may turn it over to authorities.

Keep t.v. off when not watching it. Don't use unnecessary electricity. Put on a fucking sweat shirt, If you have an electric furnace. I have 1200w of Hps lighting, combined with another 200w of CFL's. And I see a 20$ increase in the bill.

Does this mean my 1200w of HPS will alert the pigs? No, you just have to conserve your energy. And think about actually turning lights off when you leave the room. :)

Do you mean $20 higher than typical wasteful usage before you got the HPS, and stopped wasting as much?? You're a perfect example of why consumption isn't a good determining factor.. Think about how many kids you could get hooked for that $20/month..:)

Yea, watching your consumption is a good first step, but human waste can be converted to energy you know..

(Sorry, it was a line from a show.. I couldn't resist..:) )

I am only running 400 watts, I don't think I'll have any problems. Was just out looking at the meter and I don't really notice a diff with the lights on/off, guess I will find out when I get the next bill
