Will this heat sig tip off the cops? Please help!

Hi all,

A friend of a friend has a set up with 2x1000 watt hps in air cooled hoods. He has an exhaust fan that exhaust the air from the lights and room up into the attic through a hole in the door in the attic stairwell. The room is a spare bedroom that has two windows in it, and they are worried about their heat sig showing.

the temps in the room when both lights are on reach the upper 80's. more like 89 degrees. They have an Ac unit for the room but have no hooked it up yet.

should they be nervous about FLIR or IR detection by the cops? will the lights heat up the walls enough for the cops to be able to detect the room, as the room is 89 degrees compared to the other rooms in the house being at 72 degrees.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Police don't just go out looking for heat signatures to bust grow operations they are usually in the sky for another reason, but this is usually not how people get busted. Typically the way people get caught is by talking to friends about their grow. or just generally talking to anyone about it. You have much more of a chance of getting busted by talking about it than you ever will on a random police fly by.

Thanks for the quick reply. The chance of it happening are low, but i am curious as to whether or not a FLIR unit or IR unit would be able to pick up the room i had described above. any other inputs?

To answer the question, yes they can. You have to think though there are so many reasons for a room to be hot. Computer room. Media room, the duck work has disconnected to the vent in that particular room, and so many others. So even if a chopper came over the house with a therm cam they would have no reason to believe you have a grow. A judge would not give a worrent to find out anyways, just not enough there to justify one.

as AlwaysFUBAR said.... they will be able to pick up heat. but they can pick up heat on anything. for instance, my computer room is really warm because we have 4 computers and a pretty hot lamp that runs in here. Im sure it would probably show on a heat sync, but they wouldn't come check in on me.

I think you're at risk if you're growing on a mass scale...say an entire house full of high watt lights.

but like I said...I wouldn't even be concerned about it because you're more likely to get caught for telling the wrong person.

I have choppers that pass over my house all the time and there has never been a knock at the door. Well I take that back. There was a knock at the door just not for that. Scared the shit out of my wife though. She dosent do well with stress. UMMMMM no officer that ttttthat person dont live here aaaanymmmoree. lol

Thats true. but does your computer room get up to 89 degrees? that temp almost seems way too high for me. thats why i worry it could be detected.

Okay, this picture is obviously of a large grow probably using easily 10,000 watts or more in a poorly insulated attic. OF COURSE it shows hot through the roof, the only thing separating the roof from the massive amount of heat and light is a half inch of particleboard and some shingles!

I have 3 1500W space heaters that I run in the winter, and no cops have ever come knocking down my door.

If your friends are putting an A/C unit in the room, then the temperature will be much lower. They will be FINE.

lol, I think I know that picture. No shit, is it bad insulation! There is no insulation! That is not a grow house, the cops lied and went and flirred a co-workers house (on accident) they say and that is all the heat they saw. They then went to KT (knock and talk) and they then found out it was a cop and they had just bought the house and their heating billd were thru the roof (lol). They found out it was because of no isnulation.


maybe I am wrong, i am sure I am. BSorry, I am high. But no insulation looks just like that.

A stream of heat? That is what they look for, if they suspect. They watch it at odd hours and see if it is always on or temp like a dryer. If it never changes acording to the "never get busted" they got a grounds for a warrant.


I would just fix it and not sketch. Unless you are already suspicious. It is easy to fix.

Dude paranoia has hit you like a ton of bricks. There would have to be so many things that line up for a cop to even suspect a grow house. Even when they do suspect the have to do a knock on the old door. When they do ask for a warrant, close the the door, that night discreetly get everything out of the house.

so if ur just growing under 1 1000 watt hps in the basement you'll be fine?. i've never heard of a small grow room op getting busted but ya never know...

You definitely need to get that room cooled down. Not just because of the cops. But your plants need to be in a certain temperature range (around 68 to 78 degrees) otherwise they wont grow as big or as healthy as they should.

ill tell them to get that AC running asap. Hopefully they can get the temps down to atleast 80..
