Why Flush?

The following was actually my reply to another thread earlier today but after posting it i decided it was worth sharing here with my Michigan homies as well. I'm sure my views on this topic will rub some people the wrong way but i don't care. The topic of flushing comes up so often and i rarely even bother to reply but i guess i'm getting a little tired of seeing the blind leading the blind. I used to flush all my plants religiously but after years of serious indoor growing i decided to test the theory rather than follow the herd...

Now to quote myself.

Why flush?

Two reasons...

First reason, (the only real reason) is because you over fed you plant(s) to the point it has become toxic for the plant's health.

Second reason, (the reason most people flush) because you read somewhere (here/internet most likely) or someone told you that you have to flush in order to get smooth good tasting bud.

Its total bullshit, flushing/starving a completely healthy and properly fed/maintained plant the last couple weeks it matures is going to accomplish nothing but hurt your yield. Flushing is another one of those myths that people swear by because they have always done it and think the weed they grow is the greatest shit ever. It doesn't matter if you're growing in soil or hydro, with organic nutes or inorganic (AKA chemicals as the organic growers refer to them) your plants can't tell the difference, trust me. If you don't believe me i suggest you test it out for yourself, side by side comparisons.

Most people think you can feed a plant as heavy in weeks 8-9 before harvest as they did in weeks 4-5 during peak flower production as long as they flush, they're wrong. The last couple weeks of the plants life (especially the last week) it needs very little nutrients compared to what it needed during peak flower production but it does in fact need nutrients. In order to achieve maximum yield, potency and quality you must maintain proper nutrition for the duration of the plant's life, period.

Dont flush, take a small bud and put it in the microwave for 25 seconds and watch. Than put a flused bud in there and watch.

Than imagine what the magnisium is doing to your lungs.

Flush brother flush.

Please explain to me exactly why you think there is magnesium in unflushed bud but not in flushed bud?

Never seen any scientific evidence that flushing does anything. I think it just starves the plant when it's putting on the most weight.

Yeah, the minerals aren't removed by flushing. You can't leach minerals from a plant via its roots, they only go in, not out. Magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium, etc... it's going nowhere. All you're doing is depriving it of enough to produce new growth, so it starts basically eating itself and fucking up the product.

Who smokes their bud from a microwave? Is the microwave test to see if its the "dank"? Anyways I curtail feeding towards the end but there is not reason the starve the beast before harvest.

I was going to bring this up but I was waiting for him to reply first...

Why on Earth are you putting bud in a microwave, ever!??!???!????? Seriously man, if you have something to argue about why you feel flushing is necessary please explain it, I think this is a topic that needs debate rather than any newb out there reading just accepting one side or the other.

Classy!

I'm with you. Throughout my life I've had many many different hobbies. Never have I had a hobby so full of voodoo and unfounded claims. You want to prove your point do a double blind study with multiple participants. Have them smoke both flushed and unflushed (with that being the only variable changed). I'll bet no one could tell the difference. I can't believe no one has ever done it. I may try next grow for the sake of science.

Are any other agricultural products have their soil flushed to make them healthier? If so which ones? If they do flush there must be studies to back up the decision. Where are those studies? Links?

Hmm I have always been a flusher, same as most... because I was told that it produces a better taste. I am however open to change. I will try not flushing this harvest, but anyone on any direct sort of taste comparison flush vs. no flush? Thanks for the original post.. it takes balls to go against the grain!

I've never noticed any difference between flushing and not flushing... the quality is decided by the drying/curing process.

couple misconceptions

flushing... usually refers to drenching of the pot to wash away salt build up from synthetic chemicals and etc residue in the soil...flushing it away if you used too much.

however in organics this usually is never a problem BUT

that is very different than in the last few weeks when you use WATER ONLY... not "flush"... but just water.

snap crakle pop... you ever smoked a bowl...and after you light it you see some sparks come off it...theres your answer. I would say does change the taste. You want your plant in the last weeks to brake down all the natural sugars in leaf. Adding nutes during the end of your plants life cycle does not allow the plant to do this as effectively thus changing the flavor and flooding the oils and resin being produced with nutes instead of sweet sugar leaf juice:weed: take it for what you will but I'm not a doctor so

That's just part of the myth... I've seen flushed bud snap and crackle and burn black, and I've seen unflushed bud smoke smooth and burn to clean white ash...

That's all how it's dried. Roll up a wet ass bud that's barely dry enough to smoke and see what color the ash is. Black.

If you have so much nutrients built up in your grow medium that you can go the last few weeks on just water without seeing the plant's health decline you probably were over feeding to begin with.

No, I've never smoked anything and had sparks come off it lol! I would suspect anything that does that probably had some sort of pesticide on it when it was harvested. Again, starving your plants won't make them taste better.
