Why do you care what other people think?

Simple question, complicated answer.

So, why do you?
Unfortunately its all about money & power.... The more someone thinks highly of you means the more sway you have in convincing said individual to do something. This influence can be used to physically make some one do something for you or buy a product you endorse... This is why presidential candidates accept endorsements. In real life these people don't really mean anything but when someone who is well respected talks well about said candidate then others are influenced. It all boils down to the alpha male seen in animal society. We humans are no different, and we like to think we are different but we behave the same as lesser aniamals. People care because they want to be the alpha-male or as close as possible. our society leaders are intelligent, good looking, & wise. This is what our animal instincts think are the best attributes so everyone tries to excel in these area.

In the end think of it like this. Would you trust a crack head or a medical doctor.... ( this is an example of who is more wise)

How else am I to gauge myself than by the positive or negative effect/feedback reflected off of others? To measure myself by my own standards is egotistical beyond measure.

There are enough atrocities in the world as it is... Think about how shitty things would be if everyone had a 'fuck you, I'm doing everything I want for self gratification' mentality. If no one could ever be fucked to help you out or spare your feelings. We wouldn't have hospitals, charities, welfare, shelters, the emergency services and would probably all rip the shit out of eachother, put lightly.

People like to call me an asshole because im not afraid to say what the majority is thinking. I know the truth hurts sometimes, but is that a reason to not speak it? Its ok to think about others feelings, but not to the sacrifice of truth.

take your ego & emotions out of the equation, then and only then will you understand the universal truths.

I could never actually explain what it is that I DO care about. Most just wouldn't get it.

I think this is the absolute wrong reason to care what others think about you...Who gives a fuck about what people think, as long as you are true to yourself, screw the world!

I care about what people think, because it helps me maintain control over them and my surroundings...All about a perceived image, because most people will believe you are who you say you are, especially if you act/look the part. But deep down you just use them as pawns in your own personal little chess game of life.........

Metasynth, there probably wouldn't BE anything or any real infrastructure in the world if we all had a 'screw you/every man for himself' mentality. It's so easy for you to say that when 99% of the things in your life have been provided by someone else and you don't consider how much you have been blessed with/spares from in your life at the mercy of someone else.

why do i care about what other people think?

my reality is subjective, just like everyone else. the only way to approach objectivity is to attempt to discern what other people think, and furthermore, why they think it. motivation and intent is the why behind the what, and infinitely more interesting.

True test of character isn't doing things to be righteous because others are watching, it's all about doing the right thing when people AREN'T watching. There is good and bad in the world, you do not need the approval of others to be a true, righteous, and "good" human being. I do not need others to tell me how I better the universe, I know what I do to benefit mankind, and those who are of pure intent will join their brothers in the greater pursuit of an unclouded existence.

So you do care , but you are not doing nice things for the positive reactions of people towards you.. Right. THe way you typed it before implies you do whatever the fuck you want regardless of how it affects people... Ok, misinterpreted that.

I don't, probably why I've gotten in trouble as a youth and why I'm able to do what I do for a living.

I've never cared for unimportant people's opinions.

I live my life for me and I'm happy.

Everybody cares what other people think, it's human nature. Even those (especially those?) who say "I don't care what anyone thinks". We're social creatures, we don't like being alone, we want to be liked/loved. If you didn't care what other people thought of you, you wouldn't own a mirror (why waste the time), and you'd buy all your clothes from the walmart bargain bin. We all care.

People are not all the same.

In my case I don't give a damn what anyone thinks about me. Why should I? Will it make me into what they think I am rather than what I am? Will it make me a better person if they think highly of me or a lesser person if they think poorly of me? Should I have hurt feelings if I find someone does not like me? Should I jump for joy if I find someone does like me? Will I lose intelligence because someone thinks I am a moron, or will I become an Einstein if someone believes me to be highly intelligent? Will I become uglier than I am if someone thinks I am unattractive or will I become better looking than I am if someone thinks I am attractive?

When I was in junior high school and in high school it mattered to me what others thought of me. After that, I didn't care in the least. All that mattered to me is if I was content with being who and what I am.

That is totally inaccurate in my case. I truly do not care.
You proved me right with you inaccurate statement. If you truly did not care what people think, then why do you feel it necessary to tell me so? So apparently you do care what I think, because you want me to think you do not care.
