Which is a good digital SLR camera to start taking close up pictures of trichomes?

Is it just setting macro mode on a typical point and shoot? I can get close but not close-up microscopic. I've tried the usb microscopes but find them limiting in that all the ones I've tried have to be connected to a laptop to use.

If going with a digital SLR is a necessity, what would be the attributes of a macro lens that can produce those amazing close-up shots of trichomes?

SLR camera with a macro lens is great. I sure miss mine, I had a Cannon which I find very pleasing for the type of photos I take. There are many good ones out there today, however lens are another story. Need to do lots of reading and comparing features and prices along with what kind of mount your camera has, they aren't all the same. I am hoping that next year I get a new one.
good luck to you in your quest

Any camera body that is compatible with good glass will work. Sometimes the lower end DSLR cameras wont support pro glass and if you want stunning shots, I'd recommend pro glass. I'd think if you spend around a grand on a body, it'll support any lens out there. I happen to use nikon but canon is decent too ;).

Canon Rebel T3i + A Macro lens (any will do) you can also buy a T3 if you want it should work. For a t3 + macro lens you can probably get one for 800$-1000$(combo with everything including a 18-55mm) or a T3i + macro lens combo for $1000-$1200. Go to henrys and ask them you want a deal. You can always get a nice but cheap interchangeable lens mirrorless slr (Sony NEX5) that take jesus photos. Its not always about the equipment its about the photographer and the settings.

A raise chicken, lol. A long dead thread but why start a new one?

What kind of camera could I score for a couple hundred dollars off ebay or something 2nd hand that would give me descent photos. Any tips. I just get pics with my shitty photo as of now but want to expand.

The camera doesn't matter, get the most resonable priced camera. The most important is the lens. Get the best macro zoom lens. Your next investment would be a ring light and maybe a soft fill light. Then a tripod most likely with a swing arm. Those are the better long term investment. New models of cameras every year with better imaging quality. Why spend on something obsolete in a year.

For ultimate macro you will want a large format. If you are super baller get the RED 8k.
