when u put the soil into the pot do u press down on it or no?

I dont press it down but I do pack it a bit by bumping the bottom of the container on the ground once its full. Watering it fully finishes all the packing i think it needs and seems to work for me.
 
nope. just use my fingers to even out the surface, but you want the soil loose as possible. add some perlite/vermiculite, you'll be happy
