When to flower?

Hi Growers,

I'm a first time grower and currently have the following set up;
3plants in 15litre pots
80x80x180 tent
Extractor fan and carbon filter
250w Hps light 30 inch from plants
Began germination on 12th sept. Didn't put light on them until they were a week old and were 3cms high
Since then they have been on a 18/6 light schedule.

They have grown approx 7 inches in height.
Put biobizz grow into water but showed a little nute burn so only using water for now.

I'm trying to determine when to flower because they don't look large enough from comparing them to other plants in week 4 on YouTube.

They are OG kush seeds I bought and I don't have a ph reader.

Also I have a fan on them constantly to try and give them a good workout and get nice n strong.

Should I leave them another week before starting to flower with a 12:12 light phase or what should I do?

I'll upload a photo later

Thanks for any advice
Reggie

Hey bro just remember they will doulble to triple in size when you put them in to flower you need to leave room for the light to be around 18" away from the top of the plants by the end

but by the size of your tent its going to be tight! so you might not want to veg them to long if your going to run all 3 in there photos will aways help look forward to seeing them

Great point...I would recommend flipping your bitches when they are at the fifth node,or about 18"

Hi man,
Thanks for your feedback. I've taken a couple of pics of my plants, hopefully you can advise on flowering and general state of them as it's my first time growing.
Thanks
Reggie

Hey Reggie, theres a few factors to consider when wanting to flip. First off is genetics. Some genetics will only stretch a little and some will double or triple in size as stated earlier.

You say you have OG's, great choice btw one of my favs. The OG is mostly indica and shouldnt stretch too much ~40% give or take. I usually flip my indica dominant strains at about 12 inches while the strains that will tend to stretch more (i.e Skywalker OG) i will start my bloom cycle when they are 7 inches. Its a matter of personal taste.

Are you using your hps to veg? If so i would recommend that you get yourself some t8 fixtures with some daylight cfls. 1 theyre alot cheaper to run and cost nothing to buy.

With Plants this young and small, i usually give them only a B1 supplement & Calmag until they are about 7 inches then start my veg soup @ 1/4 strength and work my way up.

Its all about learning what will work best for you and once you tuned in your growing techniques, you will have ur own way of giving ur girls the best u can offer.

Just have fun and watch the way they react. They will tell u if theyre happy or vice versa.

Happy growing dude!

"250w Hps light 30 inch from plants" - reggie

Sorry i don't know how to quote properly since i'm new but that doesn't sound right. I'm learning indoor so I may be wrong but isn't that too far?

ad mixed reports on this so I don't actually know but open to others opinions, might move it closer this week actually, suppose it's all trial and error

Thanks for the advice mate. Any idea on how close my hps 250w should be to the top of my girls? And should this change from veg to flower stage?

Hey reggie, ive never veg'd with a hps, but i can tell u that its too high and will cause your plants to stretch.

Now is your hps air cooled? If so, you will be able to bring the light much closer. The only thing has i stated in my previous post, hps is not made for vegging, its doable but you will see stretch in your plants and your electricity bill will be trhough the roof!

Looks like theyll need another month and a half before you flip them maybe a week less. But if your not doing anything wrong and you want to get all you can outta them lettem get about three times that size and letter buck. Ive seen nice plants under 250s. But ya, you want them to grow most in flower, not veg.

The guy in the grow shop said it's ok to veg with a hps just once I give it a little more distance than when in flower. Looking at my pics they don't appear to have stretched cause they are still only iphone height in week 4. Planted seed on sept 12th. Also electricity bill isn't really am issue as it's prob going to be an extra €40 which isn't a prob if I end up getting a nice harvest from them. Return on investment and all that.

I think I'll leave them get to about 15inches in height before I flower them as I've loads of room in the tent for three girls.
Thanks all

If what your looking for is return on investment, then your hps in veg is counter productive. Dont know what electricity costs in Europe but here in NA running t8's costs a fraction of the price than running hps.

Keep posting pics man and good luck!

Found this chart online.
I actually measured the distance from bulb to plants last night and it's actually 20 inches so I might go a little closer again based on this chart. I assume the tropical line is the line to follow? Thanks for sharing. I start week 5 tomorrow so going to give mine another week before changing light and begin to flower.

Ya, full sun at the equator gives off 2000 moles of PAR DLI, which means the sun gives plants 2000 micromoles of light wave radiation to photosynthesize during a day cycle per square inch. All plants have a max where more light/photons/radiation will hurt it. That is why light movers work, the daily total is more important. I do not remember what the max for herb is, i think it was around 2700 - 3k PAR DLI, depending on strain, but that may be wrong.

PAR = photosynthetically active radiation, DLI = Daily light integral
