What's the Best way to toughen or harden-off plants

My mother plant is indoors and I just got like 5 clones, their just starting to root. I want to put those clones outdoors. I was thinking about giving the clones no veg time under a light indoors, as soon as it it roots transplant them in a 5 gal in the mountains. Put them under a tree or find a shady spot then gradually move them in to a sunnier location. Would that work?

I have just moved plants outside. I had no problems. Ya want them to be big enough and strong enough to take the shock. If ya just put them outside for a few hrs a day and add more hrs that would be to harden them off.
