Vegetable and fruit parts like banana peels, potato skins and watermelon rinds... and not just the scraps. Had a bowl of leftover corn or peas in the fridge? Throw em in the compost pile. Basically any veg and fruit leftovers. Yard clippings, dead leaves, old soil that would otherwise be thrown away.

Just remember, NO MEAT OR BONES.

a great compost pile can be made with horse manure (high in nitrogen = great cuz pot uses it up rapidly), grass and shredded leaves. you can use a lawn mower to shred them and this will hasten the break down of the organic matter into humus. a little bit of lime will help too. mix it all in with a bunch of dirt and water a few times per week to keep it moist and have a great environment for microbial activity. you can cover it with a tarp in order to heat up the pile but it is not nessasary if you put the pile in the sun. have it in a sunny spot and it wil break down quick. turn the pile atleast once per month and you should have good compost in 6 months.
