Yields in soil and hydro are the same. The advantage with Hydroponics is its faster.

Outdoors, my rules change..
Indoors, i wait for the calyxes to swell and the buds to start smelling ripe with at least 5-10% amber. If i see over 30% amber on a cola i went too far for my liking

It appears half leaf in the pics I suppose. In reality I pull a dry fan leaf or two off per smoke session. And handling the bud loose dry leaf shakes off. What goes in the bowl or the vape wand is all flower, and perfect moisture content. It is surprisingly smooth smoke for as young as it is, and I attribute that to organic soil. Its bag appeal surely would have benefitted from a more ambitious trimming, but even Nebula and Rosenthal say cosmetics have nothing to do with effect. If you sat with me for a session, I believe you’d agree. Thanks for all the comments

Further reflection: I first saw trimmed, unflattened, gorgeous bud in 1980. I was told it was Hawaiian but I knew it came from NorCal, because it was so fluffy and crystal coated I knew this could not have been compacted and smuggled. Everything (except a tiny bit of homegrown) I’d ever smoked was hard packed Colombian red and occasionally Jamaican or the local Panamanian, and some garbage Mexican (Mexicans grew awesome weed but it never left Mexico). I speak Spanish, so when the Washington DC dealer proudly announced “Its called Sense a million because it turns on all your senses” I cocked my head like a dog. It didn’t make sense. I figured out that day he meant sin semilla and laughed out loud!! He wanted the ungodly price of $5/gram, but we gladly paid it. But to dismiss flower as unworthy based only upon its appearance is like saying a song sucks because you didn’t like the video. The visual is ultimately meaningless. It’s all about the music

Other than a few show buds, all my smoke gets trimmed on the rolling tray. I only smoke about 6 ounces a year and don't really have anyone I can give it to {for security reasons} I end up turning lots of old bud into canna coconut oil. I hate the thought of taking the time to trim what might end up in oil.
That said, I do tend to trim the best of the season, figuring it will be the first to get smoked.

Good point. And I will likely shake and roll more trim off to add to the 5z I’ve already decarbed to create tincture

I'm not going to debate whether or not I think your bud is good without any firsthand account of my own. I only meant to point out that what you are calling a "20 oz" yield is likely at least 25% leaf. Frankly, I often don't fully trim my buds until just before I roll them into joints or pack them in a bowl, but I also don't even weigh my harvest anymore either.
That sinsemilla story is funny indeed, and I agree that more often than not dealers would just make up stories to help sell the bud. Some of the best bud I had back in the day was some purple thai that was compacted from a brick, didn't look super pretty, but was amazing smoke. On the flip side of that, I've grown some stuff that would look amazing in pics, but the smoke wasn't worth anywhere close to $5 a gram.

but haven’t you also grown as good as you’ve ever had? Looks, aroma, taste, effect?
My outdoor untended crop is definitely not even close to my best, and your take on weight is correct, but it is a fun high that people enjoy enough to ask for another handout.

I almost cried when i tried the 3 strains i just harvested, they all taste great and are so smooth. They looked great but the real test comes from smoking it

While i don't disagree.I do feel that in order to meet hydro results in soil there needs to be some "growing experience" under the gardeners belt.

Genetics is #1. The rest doesn't matter if you are not starting with good genetics. A perfect light and dialed room will not make shit genetics good. It will bring out the best they have to offer as shit genetics, but will not make bad, good.

I want to see the best grower in the world grow a plant with the worst possibly yield in genetics (Which is impossible because we can never know until we grow it sadly, but if we could, lets just say he wouldn't get much lolol). How much grams per watt would they get? I'm always surprised at how different some phenos/strains make their buds/yields. All about the shape, size, density, and bud to branch ratio.

In speaking with a local producer with plans for future sales, their research showed a few things. For instance, they found deep planters superior to planters larger in diameter but more shallow. Size doesn't always mean anything since I've gotten more yield off of smaller plants than larger plants.
In the end, I really have found that yield correlates with light strength and quality. I've recently switched from an LED and a 400 watt HPS to a 315 watt CMH. This has made the biggest improvement in my bud as far as yield and bud density goes.
So, biggest rule? Provide good lighting.
