Im a wanna be grower from BC too....I've built a cab thats 4' by 3' and 6'high, I'm still not sure what to line the interior with yet, possibly Silverboard rigid foam board (not a great R-value) and keeping the grow cab warm is a worry now that winter is almost here....I've got a garden shed (12'x8') that I'm going to build a small room across the back (4'x8')....I'll insulate with rock wool on all 4 walls (the outside wall, 2x4 studs will be furred out to create 2x6 studs)....theres so much information on lighting its hard to choose...I'm looking at a 600w HID with a MH and a HPS bulb, seems to be a popular wattage, I hope its not too much (heat) for this 12sqft cab... smell is also an issue to factor in .....I'm a pensioner and don't really want the other homeowners to know I'm growing....being retired I've got a lot of time to tend to my grow, I've been reading as much as I can and getting a lot of information (Rollitup forums...Grasscity forums etc)....I hope to get started soon
Sounds like fun. Containing the smell in a shed might be the challenge. Have you looked for a super low smell variety? The fan for a coal filter will make noise and people may hear it also.

With a super low smell variety do you forfeit quality (taste, aroma, buzz?) Will a fan in a box packed with rock wool muffle the sound with insulated air ducts? My seed source is a Canadian mail order (right here in BC)...they've got feminized seeds...too many strains to choose from, not inexpensive though $75 for 10 seeds....still, on a pension I've got to watch every expenditure....funny (mayb not so funny) I've been smoking cannabis for 50+years (I'm 65) and thanks to legalization I'm being forced to consider growing my own because the government smoke is crap and too expensive....hey thanks for the reply, got lots more learning to do

I don't know I'm fumbling my way through myself and my house was stinkin when I grow. I did have a pure sativa that happened not to smell and it's high is awesome like no other I've had before though it's not high thc. However it was very hard to grow and sativas are difficult indoors and take forever to finish. I don't recommend that one as a starter but given that it was good there must be a nice low smeller out there that is easy to grow too. Funny it did smell once I cured it, like bananas, but nothing amazing in smell department.

I think it will help. I saw a diy muffler here was a bucket around the 6" pipe with rockwool or something. That reduces the whooshing sound. But someone said not the motor hum. I think the motor / fan may need to be somehow on a vibration damper, like I don't know, hanging from rope to springs to rope again, so the sound doesn't pass through the structure?

You're going to love this hobby though it does nickel and dime you to death, omg. I see some threads here for 'low smell'.

Retiree been growing 1 or 2 for 10 years now. Do these things and you will be happy. Go with decent cob or Quantum Board lighting, efficient, many probs. with heat, cooling, and space, disappear in small grows. Put Mylar type product on walls. 1 month between starts. you only deal with 1 plant smelling at a time. Store bought odor remedies may be enough.

HPS all the way for bargain bud with weight.
I have to agree,,for return on investment it's definitely worth the extra couple of quid electric bill to get double the yield,,I would miss cfl, cdm are a bit pricey, DE like gavita again too pricey and led definitely too pricey,,,

What I have decided to do is make a 8x8 tent out of PVC pipes, plastic sheeting, and emergency blankets. The PVC will allow me to adjust the size as needed.

Haven't decided on lighting yet, I think I will start with several LED and fluorescent bulbs.
I've seen some comments on this post about yielding one oz every few months?

Right now I have one fully sprouted seedling (about 1.5 wks since start of seed germination), 3 germinated seeds that I moved from papertowel today, and 4 that I put down to germ today. The seeds are regular, unfemed, so I took into account that some will probably be male. Also am picking up 5 clones in a few days.

I picked up some 4' dual light fluorescent strip fixtures for free. Purchased some dual row T8 LED dual end powered ballast bypass lights from Amazon for $30 for 4, using 8 total over the plants and 5 for side lighting. I used some 2x3 and 2x2 boards to mount them on with duct strapping to hang them from. I'll get another pic of my kluge, can't find one at the moment and post it. Home Depot here sells "hardboard" that is relatively lightweight that could be used with 2X2's to build a box. It will stand up to moisture. I do have a small space heater but my room is 6'X6'X8'. The foam sheet insulation would be easy enough to glue to the outside for insulation. I'm in NorCal so it does freeze here.

I've been looking at this Quantum board...Horticulture Lighting groups 100w @ $196 CAD ..or 600w Vipar Spectra LED@ $226 CAD....one of these or ?? Like the idea of 1 month between grows...thanks for the info

I think a tarp would stand up better, just my opinion.

just a heads up 8x8 is not starting small and likely larger than the grows anyone in this thread was giving you advice for
also, LED to flower an 8x8 space would cost a few thousand dollars. if you're planning on buying a couple "1200w LED" from Amazon save yourself the time/money and do a bit more research. you need about 2500w (real watts from the wall not Amazon marketing watts) of high efficiency LED. or 3000w of blurple/HID.

if you're absolutely set on a 8x8 space you would need 4 dimmable 1000w HPS fixtures.
https://www.amazon.com/iPower-Digital-Dimmable-System-Reflector/dp/B005F642CQ

to reiterate, that is not starting small.
starting small would be a 3x3 and 400w hps.

possibly Silverboard rigid foam board
That might not be the best thing to do. I want to find out more, but my grow room last year was nothing but a 1"x2" frame covered with aluminum backed foam. The light showed thru. Also how much light gits absorbed by the foam. It almost glows. That's light that not reflected back to the plants.

I've tried the really cheap way, too. It can give some disappointing results. I had to be convinced and was.

Advice given to me by lighting pros was you can't go wrong starting with a HPS. They recommended The first light purchased should be a 600 watt HPS with a future addition two 400 watt MH's for flower. The reasons were the 1000 watt HPS would require AC in a 4x4 room, but the 600 can be cooled with a fan. The two 400 watt MH's will spread the light better than one larger one. I would start with one light and build from there.

I hope @hotrodharley checks this out because that's where I'm headed, too.

Compare the efficiency ratings from some source (many out there). It makes deciding what is best for your grow easier

From all the reading I've done you want 6000 lumems at the canape for a prime grow. I don't really know how to calculate this without giving a little thought, but the more light within the temp range the better. Actually, 400w in more than you'll find on most of the blurlpe grow lights from amazom.
