Hi ripabg - if you are looking for a dual-spectrum, this isn't it. If you are looking for a regular 1000w HPS or MH ballast then this looks OK to me. If you go this route, you'll have to get a conversion bulb. I'd recommend getting the HPS ballast and using an MH conversion bulb. Or better yet (provided you don't want to drop the coin on a dual-spectrum but want both HPS and MH), you should look at switchable ballasts (the digital ones seem very popular).
Also, you should ask VictorVIcious about vegging with CFLs and then flowering under an HPS. There are a lot of options, prices, and advice but only you can tell what is going to work within your space and budget.

I appreciate the question. I'm not qualified to answer it, I have never used cfl's. I believe they can do an excellent job of not only vegging but flowering as well. I just read a book about it. Guy grows 8 oz for less than $100. pictures of the three plants every day for like 69 days, amazing.
As for the hps, I don't have experience with a 1000 watt hps. The ones I have are 400watt. I couldn't afford the bigger ones then. Now I could buy any I wanted to. I chose the T-5's and I would think it pretty obvious I'm happy about that decision. I am getting the same production off the T-5 that I got when I placed 2-400 watt hps light over one of my tables. I figure thats about them same as a 600watt hps would give you.
And I do understand that there are options. I started with soil, built drip systems and converted to flood and drain. Some things that remain constant problems are venting and heat. If anyone would not have a problem venting and cooling it should be me. I have 10 ceiling in my flowering room and access to an attic so I can vent out the top of the roof. By using the t-5's my 500cfm fan keeps everything in range easily, I don't have any venting hooked to my lights. My intake is passive and all my oscillating fans are wall mounted. It allows me to create a better growing environment because I'm producing more usable light and less heat for less money. I just picked up the third t-5 fixture this week and I have it over the vegging plants now. Two more to go.

Here is the thing, i have a 400 watt MH, and HPS, i use MH to veg, and the HPS to flower.... Looking to go bigger, 1000 watt HPS, for 12 plant drip, air cooled reflector...grow is in the basement, should stay cool...the 400 watt is in a separete place...

What type of system do you want to use? 12 plants isn't many to put under a 1000watt light. I would continue to use the mh and hps. Add two more tables in the 8' by 6' room. there are 20 plants on those tables. VV

You're talking about fluoros. Fluoros are not HIDs. Flos produce low-intensity light- and will never replicate the result of HID lights, sorry.

A 1000 HPS on a plain ol' CWA ballast with a batwing reflector is the way to go. If you need to do so to control temps due to a small room airspace, use a cool tube with the batwing.

rip, my 820mm^2 trays hold 23 pots each. I have 4 trays in the flowering area, each pair of trays has a 1000... so the short answer is about 46 plants (with SoG pruning and flowering as soon as your cuttings have got a good spray of roots) under each 1000.

Please keep in mind that Al is being modest as always. He harvest every two weeks and has been doing so for sometime. If you get a chance check out My Current Set-up: Journal. It would be helpful AL if you could do some kind of cost anaylisis for the extra you use. I know you probably have it posted somewhere. Cool tubes fans etc.
