What are phenotypes?

I've seen alot of peaople say " I've found a cool phenotype", and other such things.
I was wondering what a phenotype is?
Kind of like the personality of the plant?

Sidenote, anyone know where to get some nice blue or purple conneissuer strains?

the observable properties of the plant that are produced by the interaction of the genotype and the environment

Basically, it's just the obvious characteristics of the plant, as opposed to the genotype which are the possible characteristics of the plant...

Exactly. For example, I just grew some LSD which in genotype should have been a stocky indica. But in phenotype it was tall and lanky with very sativa characteristics. Put another way, genotype is the genetic plan, phenotype is the outcome.

A genotype is the plant's genetic makeup. A phenotype is the expression of those traits. Expression of traits depends on a great many factors and all these come together to determine what genes are or are not expressed. A good understanding of genetics is important if one is planning on doing any breeding and in general the subject is light years too complex for most growers. I found general genetics more difficult that organic chemistry if that gives you an idea.

But, with a basic understanding of Mendelian genetics and some trial and error you might get lucky. Personally, I find the process too wasteful of resources and leave it to the breeders. You will see why if you read up a bit.

Google Gregor Mendel or Mendelian genetics to read about it.

what they said ^^^ with this add on
many strains will have a few distinct phenotypes
for example, many growers say that the most desirable pheno of jock horror will have a lemon smell
sadly, i got a male, still bitching about that for a bit

Okay...So kind of like the expected outcome of my twop plants. Both mostly Indica ( could only tell from the smoke at first )
But now that they're coming along, one is very sativa (Lanky leaves and such) and the bigger one of the two has think wide leaves ALONG with some red coming in on the middle section of leaves.
