Want advice on how to move from miracle grow to fox farm trio

Well I got an 8' ceiling but grow area is only 5X5, already looking pretty full. I'm just gonna let them get some height now, hopefully will end up about 4' tall.
 
Yes, give them a week (or two) after transplanting to recover the root damage fully. Man, I used miracle grow many times with no problems, just look out for nute burn. Introduce the foxfarm slowly if you have any doubts. How old are the ladies? DOnt look too old...I would wait before switching to 12/12, but that all depends on what you want for tield and what your time structure is! Happy growing!

They are about ten weeks old. Had early problems trying to figure out the right lighting which stunted the grow for a couple weeks. I'm looking for quality and maximum yield.

It definitely keeps them shorter, the more you top or fim, the bushier they get. Topping and supercropping and tying down (LST) all work together to keep the grow room canopy even. You get better light utilization I believe, and a lot of moderate sized colas (rather than one giant cola and a lot of smaller)

It works perfect for my needs, might not suit everybody though
 
im worried i will lose that main big cola, and that the other ones wont gain anything from it. i understand the concept is that the other colas get better, but do we know this to be true? you can see that even though i leveled out the canopy, i still got one cola that was bigger than the others, which is the apical meristem. will it really give energy to the other flower units? i need someway to control vertical growth, but i didnt like lsting.

Big Bens article on topping is a must read if you have any questions. It really depends on how you top. A plant will have a larger bud with no topping but that does not mean more yield overall. I top above the second node for 4 main colas. It will make for a bushier plant but it can still grow as tall as you want or don't want. Read that thread along with anything else ben has posted you will learn tons! There is so much bad info going around in these forums. I use fox farms soil my last couple grows and it works great on its own (may try an organic mix in it next time).... But I add a little organic fish furt I bought from Lowes, it is a 9-1-1 around week 4-5 before I put my babies into flowering 12/12 so it has plenty of N for the stretch over the next couple weeks. After that I switch to something like a 20-10-20 to finish it out (just a simple inexpensive fert nothing marketed for MJ). Got to keep those leaves green and intact throughout! Don't fall for the marketing bs telling you need to boost up the P and have a low N for flowering! I grow my plants to about 12-15 inches and then flower resulting in 24-36" plants depending. I just run a 400 in my closet so I want good light penetration so nothing over 3 feet tall. Don't try and pump your plants full of nutes more is not better. I just try and keep it simple and pay attention to the plant, no feeding schedule...just when it needs it. I do not flush as well. AimAim those plants are looking nice! Killachris how tall is that guy, are you using a bloom fert. low on N?
 
this was a paradise acid/diesel grown 12/12 from seed under weak fluro until the 4-5th week of flower, then i got a hid light.

now i use an hid light and i veg for one week. after the stretch, my plants are usually 14-18" tall. i need to to be shorter. thinking about topping. if you get more than 2 tops, wouldnt that be fimming?
 
how long do you have to veg after doing the UB method? can it be done only vegging 3 weeks 5 if you count from sprout.

Well the idea IS to lose the huge main cola, and grow numerous moderate sized colas.

Do we know this to be true? Yes, I think this is pretty well proven. You will probably always have one largest bud, but the idea revolves around growth auxins and gravity. This is probably not a great analogy but the highest auxin concentration and the most growth occurs at the highest level of the plant. Mrs big bud, the tallest apical meristem, gets all the auxins. Tie her down slightly below the rest of the dominant buds and the rest of the buds at or above the level you have her tied down to say "hey, maybe I can be Mrs Big Bud in this gig". And they go for the gold.

Just google "auxins in cannabis" and do some reading.

If your goal is to grow trophy bud-porn colas do not top or do any training. Grow managing for the big cola.

You'll get more grams per plant if you can 1) spread that canopy out where the plant has a larger "footprint" i.e. canopy surface area intercepting light, and 2) it is more or less even where you can keep your lights as close as possible to as many terminal growing tips
 
thanks man, i do understand it. i actually use willow bark as a rooting hormone/acid when cloning. when we take branches from the willow, we take from the top of the plant, the youngest branches, since they have the most auxins. lucky for us, the willow weeps and makes it easy for us to get to the top growth.

i just hope im not losing all those hormones by cutting off the "head". im wondering if theyre lost, or if they truly are distributed?
