Very Old Seeds

recently while moving a piece of heavy furniture i redescovered a players tin full of seeds i had long since thought lost, U can see were im going with this,, ive grown for many years but never with old seed, some of these are columbian gold strains i bought in high-school 35 years ago, some are the origonal purps from the 1980/90s some are only 6 years old...many tried and true and some antiquated,,,what are the chances of germination....they have endured -30 , they have always been dry....any input from an old-er guy like myself...lol

my uncle germed a bunch of seeds that he had from the 80s and had a 75% success rate... he soaks till pops .. and shows a little tail and then right into soil.

in the 90s i grew the purple frost alot,in and out....im hoping to start a big stash of those seeds...so ill say both thanx....

Grab some other type of seed and soak in water for 24 hrs, remove those seeds from water and soak your OLD beans in the "seed" soaked water, they will germ.

most of them should grow... a few months ago a guy on here grew seeds 20+ years old

good news i have had succes with the ones labelled sticky....7 outta 40 are a go.....and are aprox 3 weeks now....

tissue culturing will bring 100% of these seeds to embryogenesis.

i like these threads/posts - i admit to being from the time period, and remember the Columbian Gold from the 70's, any resurrection of that weed is a good thing
2 tricks i've seen posted, not tried but came from good sources
1st is soaking in a very dilute bleach solution, can't recall how dilute
rationale seems to be inhibit any bacteria that could kill a very week sprout
the other is to soak in a kelp solution, gives a nice mix of micro nutrients

5% bleach/water, shaken 1 minute, rinsed with sterile water, scarified lightly, soaked for 24 hrs, rockwool, no kelp, or any nutrients, just ph'd rockwool

Old seeds can be successfully but special means are necessary. Monstergardens.com has a laboratory grade kit for cloning and sprouting.
Their process uses a sanitizing solution, a mild sugar solution to reactivate the sprouting genes and a sprouting solution.

I'll be honest with you without some serious help, seeds older than 10 years will have a very slim chance of sprouting without help.

Using heat mats is a very bad idea and too much soaking will not be successful either. These old seeds have some dormant or even dead attributes.
This kit uses a 20-1 hydrogen peroxide soak to kill bad stuff on the seed, The sugar soak gives the seed energy to overcome age issues. The there is a third stage for the actual sprouting.
