Using farm field top soil for veggies and such?

So another farmer sold off his land to the developers, and as a result, the construction crew left HUGE mounds of dark ass looking top soil that they're going to haul off. I was thinking about loading up some for use around the yard in raised planters, but don't know if that's a reasonable course of action, or if I should just buy some box store shit.

What say you greenthumbers out there?

If the Farmer rotated his crops and took care of the fields it should be good stuff.. but there's a chance those piles are already sold to someone/or company.. so you should probably ask before just taking some.. jmo.

If you can get a sample send it in to a soil testing lab to see if it's worthwhile. I've done it. If it tests good, grab it
