Finally found a local distributer of Jacks Classic. $10 for a pound and a half too! Using it on my oxen heart and heirloom cherry tomatos. They love it, can't wait till fall so I can economically manage my heat indoors and restart the tent up. Thanks for the recommendation UB

I love this Thread. It saved my ass and kept me growing! Thanks UB! I will parrot UB as much as possible but I am a spec going up a hill in a avalanche of bullshit 'marijuana science'.

Jack's acid special is a permanent part of my fertilizer regimen for my cannabis. Dynagro is the rest of it.

I have a question Regarding Microkote treated 1 gallon containers and upcanning to 3 gallon untreated containers. I'm about to grow a sativa/Indica "mutt" (AK 48) that I plan to top just above node 2 after getting to 6 nodes as described in Uncle Ben's thread on 4 main colas. Somewhere I read a caution from UB that when upcanning from 1 gallon treated to 3 gallon untreated containers root systems of the the plants may not quickly inhabit the new space. I'm guessing that the growth to 6 nodes will happen quickly under 400W HID at 20/4 photo period. So I'd like to hear thoughts on upcanning (like when) and how much time to veg in the 3 gallon pots before flipping to 12/12. As always, thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.

Keep in mind these root tip pruning techniques were developed for perennials primarily for the forestry service. You could probably get away with treated 1 gal. pots if you carefully scrape off the outside of the rootball to remove any Cu ions and then upcan to a bigger treated pot. You upcan when you think you have a solid rootball.

Good luck,
UB

UB I've seen that at least in the beginning of this thread you wrote you were using gryphon coating, do you still use it? do you use microkote? Cause on my microkote voucher I got with the item it says that you can upcan to a bigger container and within 6 days root tips start growing again. You suggest to scrape so roots would faster start growing or because it takes way more than 6 days for roots to start growing again?

i go from a treated one gallon to a treated 10 gallon. The roots spread throughout and totally filled the the 10 gallons. When Upcanning I do lightly brush my hand around the medium edges one quick swipe.

I know this is advanced cultivation but I would just like to say something as a newb.( Newb in two senses 1. A new weed grower 2. New to growing anything). I don't think you can stress this pointer enough here.

  • Foliage production - Grow for the most amount of foliage you can going into the flowering response. Maintain those leaves in a green and healthy condition up until harvest, even if it means switching fertilizer to a high N value, like a 9-3-6.

what a concept! This punched me in the face as far as growing goes. This goes against what many Marijuana Grow Books suggest and many folks on RIU parrot. I like to keep a open mind but this simple and profound concept was a tough pill for me to swallow. I must have read 4 Top rated and talked about "weed grow' books', through and through. My newb/ignorant butt did not think to read a 'plant science' book. Never the less, I don't think I am the only one that has approached growing marijuana in such a way.
What I see now are what I refer to has Gypsy Caravan Grow Shops all over California. They will sell you anything and everything that IS the marijuana industry. And with very little if any regard for actual science. Anyways, I am rambling now and I wont get into specifics about all my grow shop loathing and mistrust.
This is my grow about a week or two away from harvest. shitty camera and HPS lighting but the leafs are green for the most part and totally healthy. I am not suggesting at all this is how UB grows but this is my evolution as a newb grower after reading UBs threads/posts.
1. Threw out my (Not naming real brand names) Super Duper Alien Galactic Bubble Kush Nutes and got a 3 $ bottle of MG.
2. Stopped PHing threw out the PH chemicals and started using my favorite water on Earth -my backyard hose water. (i think it tastes amazing, there must be some nutrient I crave in it)
3. Stopped refilling my god damn Co2 tank and created a open airflow and circulation.
4. Saved a bunch of money and more importantly, time.
5. Applied a 20 degree drop in my night temp (my cheap portable AC cant fight the valley heat down to 55). The result was dense, frosty nugs. Smell amazing. My day is 85 and night is 65.... wow.
- My topping maybe questionable and my next grow will be even better.
haven't been brave enough to try the root ball scoring yet, but next grow for sure

I saved money and kept healthy leaves all grow. My harvest pics in 10 -14 days will be in better light. i will post on this thread. thank you UB

Plants look great!!!!
hey, thanks! The beauty is in the simplicity of the grow. As a newb I went in with a few concepts (MYTHS) about what a 'green thumb' must be. 1. You water daily 2. You PH and check the EC and make some kind of magical soup of all the latest chemicals 3. C02, ppm meter and refill the tank several times 4. flush, flush, flush, then when you not sure about something...flush 5. Everything that goes wrong with your plant is PH problems 6. Ed and Jorge know how to grow plants 7. De-foliate, trim leafs, loli-pop, go Mr. Miyagi on the plants 8. Potassium is the only thing a flowering plant wants 9. Tap water kills your plants 10. leafs turn yellow at harvest. list could go on and on and into Harvesting and whatever the hell 'curing' is.
It is SO wild to me that there is so much misinformation on ANYTHING. speaks highly to government regulation and checks and balances. Imagine if we let the food industry or beverage industry run amok like 'weed industry'. NO more FDA , there would be companies selling us piss and telling us its magic potion just like pre-modern times. marijuana is taboo still and quasi legal so it has opened the door for crooks and quasi science to sell equipment that NEVER would sell otherwise.

THANK YOU UB. for not selling us Piss and bringing education into the conversation.

Now I got this so basic and stress free. I feel happy when I think about my garden now.

OK no more newb rambling on this Advanced thread. there is my 2 cents

Gryphon? What in the hell is that?

I've never used MicroKote, just assuming it works the same as Spin-Out. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same thing as spin-out, just easier to find and available in smaller quantities.

And Impman, I wouldn't root score unless my roots had become pot bound. I've noticed rapid healthy growth after doing so and others that were not scored didn't grow badly, just not as good as the one that had been. I may be contradicting others, but hopefully if they disagree they will chime in.

He meant Griffins Spinout. I use MicroKote and it works great.
now that was hell of the mistype lol

also i was wondering about another thing, they position themselves a bit differently, spinnout says that it stops roots with cu ions and microkote says the same but also it claims that this coating provides micro elements. the reason i asked is that im always afraid to scrape the root ball, if soil is not packed with roots it loosens the ball too much cause the soil mix i buy is so fluffy and airy.. Kite, thanks for advice to scrub edges gently with a hand
btw spinout also says that roots continue growing in 3-6 days when upcanned.

I bought (and have now used) 20 of the 1 gallon microkote (copper) thanks to UB's post on the spin out - online about $3 ea delivered. When it was time to transplant they each slid out pretty easily with just a bit of tapping. I didn't poke around to check how dense the roots were, too afraid, they'd spent 18 days in the pot and I went w my gut. I didn't wash the dirt off down to roots as UB suggested much later in his thread (I don't think I'd read that far yet) and it doesn't appear to have in any way slowed the growth when upcanned to 2.5 to 6 gal pots - but what do I know, I'm a noob, first grow. For comparison I had several 2 gallon untreated pots at same vintage as the 1 gal microkote. Anyway, thanks UB. And for the 4 cola thread. And a half-dozen other things too.

Yep, yepper, and yeppest. You have just saved yourself a lot of heartache by finding out what a racket this is including the parroting of misguided paradigms that just won't die. I have just beat to death what you have (well) articulated) so all I'm going to say is what I've said before regarding my approach to growing pot. To me, cannabis is nothing more than another annual foliage plant and needs to be treated as such. Just because it flowers is nothing unusual. As far as I know ALL sub-tropical and tropical foliage plants flower.....it's just what they do. So why in the hell would one embrace practices that don't support that simple fact? Some folks, mainly newbs, just can't get it thru their head that it's leaves that produce the very thing they're after, not bloom foods. If you haven't seen this, it's a pretty good read - https://www.rollitup.org/marijuana-plant-problems/158144-never-ending-abuse-phosphorous-bloom.html Old archives of mine have referenced using bloom foods occasionally, like Peters 10-30-20, but I usually toss in a caveat - if you see premature leaf drop (prefaced by yellowing and/or chlorosis) it's time to switch back to a high N food in order to help stop the defoliation trend. I grow all kinds of plants, perennials and annuals and I'm getting to the point where I'm not using bloom foods at all. Last outdoor grow was using a 18-4-9 Polyon food, 12 month slow release, and they did great. It actually increased the flowering response and bud weight - anecdotally of course. :) I just added ammonium sulfate to my entire veggie garden - I can barely eat and give away all the stuff it's producing!

Anyhoo, it's refreshing that you have finally seen the light. I have quite a few Uncle Benners that are saving money, embraciing common sense practices and increasing their yields because of it, plus saving on maintenance - no need to become a slave to your plants.

Very nice garden!

Good luck,
Uncle Ben
