I think he might have meant the actual metal mesh filter that holds the carbon maybe

Ohh dazed and confused. My bad
my eyes are half open right now.

181 if you look in the air conditioning section of a home improvement store they sell a metal mesh like screen used for filters that go in your furnace.

You can interchange that with a fine mesh like screen like bra washing bags. You can be creative.
You just dont want the fan to pull all the carbon dust through.
Just air.
Again my bad.

k thanks joe that cleared it up. I was just a little unclear of how the carbon stayed in the mesh screen...

He made a bag with two pieces of screen and taped three sides .. leaving one side open .. then poured the carbon in .. then taped the fourth side ..... [I think .... ]

So would this also work well to attache to my light as an exhaust? or would i need something more powerfull. 400w hps/mh and the grow area is going to be about 2x4x5.

I think you would have to modify it to fit a inline fan for you light.
The set as it stands will not pull enough cfms.
This is more as a stand alone system for a small area.

2x4x5 envelope is adequate.

Good luck to ya Bro :-)

Ive noticed since their isnt a lot of carbon with the current specs, you have to add another box to the filter to work efficiently.

they really arent the cfm they r advertised at that is the boosted cfm that 6 inch fan is mabye 70 cfm by its self just somethin to consider cause i had a 6"carbon filter fan combo delivered to my door for 203$ that is a true 435cfm fan and a can filter 33 with pre filter and i can still smell them a bit and the room is 3x4x7 with 10 flowering filter runs 15 on 30 off just somethin to consider

i have one of those fans exhausting my little veg room (24"x34"x46" with a 250 mh) and it dosent work to well thats with an assisted 4"fan blowing in temps still get a lil crazy before i can open door
