trees in the trees...south florida

im doing a trees in the trees grow. this will be my first (real attempt) grow.
i am starting with 4
1. AMS
2. Church
3. kc 36
4. Great White

i have cleared the canopies of 2 of my areca palm trees in my yard. they will be in 3 gallon pots that are to be zip tied to the trunk of the trees.
the seeds were germinated in wet paper towel then placed in seeding soil,peat moss,worm casting and perlite mix. they are almost 3 weeks now.
final medium will be organic soil,worm castings,perlite and peat moss. i will fert with laskan fish fert for veg and alaska morbloom in flower. im doing this for personal use so im not concerned about the 3 gallon pots so please refrain. i plan to experiment with toppping 1 or 2 and lst 1 or 2.

a couple of questions...

1. at what point should i transplant into 3 gallon from solo cup?
2. once transplanted how often should i feed the fish fert?
3. when can i remove the plastic cover im using to create a greenhouse effect? one plant is already starting to outgrow it.
4. when i can i start to top or lst?

the last picture is from today. the tall one is taking off ahead of the others. i have had to shim the plastic tub im using to keep animals,rain and wind to a minimum for the first part of the grow.

Nice!! Glad to see you actually went through with it. I was curious to see how you'd get them up there, thats a great idea, although I would put one of those triangular shelf holders you put into the wall, with small piece of wood in-between because I think the weight of the soil and all plus wind might make it slide down.
Transplant when you see roots at the bottom coming out of the drain holes.
Not sure about ferts
You SHOULD be able to take them out of that now, although I don't know much on that technique
You can LST as soon as second actual leave set (ridged leaves) grows in, and top whenever you want it to split (usually 3-5 nodes up)

kc 36 gets my interest, put that in a tree and i'm subbing

i like the idea of the shelf to support weight. i dont expect it to slide because the stalk gets wider as it goes down and there are rings around it. my concern (good reason for shelf) is the pot tearing where its penetrated for the zip-ties.
so i should wait to see roots coming out of the bottom of the solo cup? expected time frame? i put them in soil (pre germinated) on 4/25.

well its going in a tree. i have 12 huge arecas in my yard. im only using 2 for this go around.
heres the view looking up one of the cleared ones. they are about 30' tall.

Damn, that is pretty high, how do you climb up and down?? But yea just wait until you see roots visible through the holes, I had mine in cups a little smaller than solo cups, and it took about two weeks to show, so I'd say 3-4 weeks (but I would check after 2[Just to be safe]).

ladder once they are moved into their final home. (right now they arent in the trees) once in the trees they will be about 10 feet off the ground where its bushy.

I have to check on my babies at least 2 times a day, so the height would be a hassle for me, but I like the concept. You can make the pot stronger by giving a couple of rounds of duct tape where the holes are for the strap. Good luck..subbed!

im the same way right now. im checking them 2-3x/day but they are accesible from the ground. i figure once they are transplanted and getting fed once a week or so it wont be an issue. they will only be about 8 feet above ground so a step ladder will do.

you can transplant anytime, more of a personal preference, some feel it's better to transplant a little later, i grow from the start in a 2 gallon pot(smaller plants)

what about feeding? when can i start? once started how often should i feed? i will be using alaskan fish fert.

I started my kc36 2 weeks ago outdoors too. I'm adding fertilizer on the third week at one fourth dosage.

the original plan was to grow them in the yard in the plant beds until one day (while seeds were germ) my sife was playing volleyball with the kids. when the wild ball went into the bushes and the kids went after it i thought....i better come up with a better plan! this was it!

i will be experimenting with topping/lst. i will do a combination of both.

transplanted today. started lst on 3 of the 4 as well.

still not up in the trees yet. i will most likely hang them this friday.
