Transplanting "From Inside to Outside"?

Hi all............
Just curious as if there's a cutoff on when I can transplant from inside to outside?
Less than 1' high? Less than 2' high? Transplant "anytime", even 7 footers? Before topping? After topping? During Veg & before flowering? During flowering? Etc, etc, etc.

My location "frost date" is "mid-May". Starting from seed, I want to time it right and transplant hearty plants but be within some "transplant guidelines".

So, just curious if I need to transplant from inside to outside before or after a certain height and/or stage of growth?

That was funny...."good response".

Frost is your main worry. Another important thing is flowering. Don't flower them before you move them outside, they'll just revert to veg because of the longer daylight/shorter darkness cycle. You'll loose 2-3 weeks while they revert.

I'd get mine outside before they get a foot tall .. and you could top inside or out just allow for the topping to sprout before moving outside i'd say .. i guess it depends how well u transplant

So about 8" to a foot tall, before it's flowering stage and it's ok to TOP beforehand "but let the wounds heal first" so to speak.

yep that sounds good ... and of course you are the one playing "god" to the plants when they are inside .. so keep light at 18/6 and i hope someone wouldnt put their little plants in 12/12 before transplanting

They say you should harden off a plant before transplanting from indoors to out doors. But I just put my indoor clones out doors without hardening off, and they are doing fine. But since the outdoors can get a bit harsh i would not put a plant thats under any sort of stress out there, like if it just got topped or something.

yeha last year i moved plants outside that just sprouted but it was a late start (end of may) .. they survived the worst Tstorm we had in the last decade .. rained about 4-5 days straight .. that was a pain in the ass keeping them safe (since i couldnt bring back inside)

i hear you on that. after the storm we had, probly same storm, it would be cool at night and hot and humid in the day.i only had a couple outside at that point and they started to get bud rot. i freaked out a little but i did catch it in time. so i chopped them and didnt lose much, but really wanted to keep them out for another few weeks or until hunting season opened.

Hardening off? What does that mean? I haven't done this in a long time and just started again. I remember that I would put a fan on the plants from clones to the time I transplanted to make the stalk stronger. To get them used to the wind.

hardening off is when you put them outside for short periods at a time to get them used to the temps and the sun. then gradually longer periods each day.

Dude, i can't quit " laughing" to your response, his comments were "uncalled for" "IMO". now you got me a doing it! "lol" anyways, I transplant from in to out when they are about 6'' -12'' weather "permitting"

generally yes it needs to be done unless your inside op is about the same as the outside. if the temps are the same then you should be ok but the direct sun may hurt them. you gotta get them used to the powerful rays of the sun

Especially seeing how I am using cfls. Would putting them in a window help?

You can harden them off by placing them in indirect sunlight, or even in the shade of another plant.

What I do is i keep them on a 16/8 cycle inside [outdoors never really goes past 14/10] and when i take them outside, i place them under this tree where they still get light but only for a few hours a day at the end of the day when its cooler outside. After a few days in the shade, i move them into direct sunlight and top them. This may stress them a little bit, but they'll have a growth spurt when they recover.

Depending on how tall your plants will be by the time you want to transplant them outdoors and how much cost and effort you want to go to you can build a cold frame to put them in, that is if you have the room and it is safe to do so.

You dig a square or rectangular hole in the ground and then above ground you build a wooden frame and have a glass or even a clear plastic, which is not as good, top so light can get in. The temp changes and conditions are not as severe as a direct transplant and if you have a late frost being partially underground you have insulation and you can throw a blanket over the top for the night.

I know people who found an old storm door that someone tossed when they replaced it with a new one and they used that for the top of their cold frame. You want the top hinged so you can open it a little during the day anyway so an old storm door or even an old storm window works great.

It is anything but practical for some for various reasons but it will work and if you have a location where you can do it and are willing to build it you can use it year after year.
