The Ultimate Odour Control Thread

You should try incense or back flow incense cones. They work for me.
I got a big 8” phresh carbon filter and an 8” ac infinity duct fan in a 4x4 tent. It kills all the smel easily with fan operating at less than half speed. I have friends who don’t smoke weed and aren’t around it much. They cannot smell it even when in the room with the tent. Very impressed. The tent can be open and I really can’t smell anything unless I’m standing right near the door

Does that mean you have to keep fan on 24 7 to keep negative pressure. I only have a 4inch in a 2x4. I will have to upgrade to a 6. My wife has a nose stronger than a bloodhound. She calls it Skunk piss.

Odour control

So you want to know about odour control in the grow room.
This is just a list of the things you can use to control the odour.
You've got to realise before you start growing that your ganja is going to smell.

(If you live in a house with your parents, you best just wait it out till you get your own place. ;) )

Here is a compiled list of helpful information to help you learn the knowledge that will help you to become a good grower.

The carbon filter.

Taken from wikipedia -

"Carbon filtering is a method of filtering that uses a piece of activated carbon to remove contaminants and impurities, utilizing chemical adsorption. Each piece of carbon is designed to provide a large section of surface area, in order to allow contaminants the most possible exposure to the filter media."

A carbon filter works by removing "the smell" from the air that passes through it.
Place a fan so that it's blowing (or pulling ) air through a carbon filter/scrubber.
It's that simple!
You can buy them from most good Hydroponic stores, as well as online. (eBay etc.)

The most common questions asked when anyone talks about a carbon filter is the following :
Can't i get it cheaper than in the store?

The answer is YES!

DIY Carbon filters

Below is a list of links to useful DIY carbon filters that people have made themselves.
Remember these are tried and tested and the people who have made them swear they work well for their needs.
( Just remember to take into account that your needs may be different. )

I will be updating this list as more are found/made.

ONA gel.

( Taken from ONA Gel odor neutralizer from 4 hydroponics.com by Growco Indoor Garden Supply. )

"Two odors can offset one another when they combine to form a bond. ONA's ingredients come from a blend of 32 essential oils and plant-derived compounds, that bond with and neutralize a wide array of pesky odors.

ONA odor neutralizer was originally developed for industrial applications to neutralize the strong odors in sewage treatment plants, rendering plants and chemical plants. If it can handle those conditions, think what it can do for you!"

ONA gel works by "killing" the smell.
( used in a grow room on a regular cycle. )

Hopefully this will stop a lot of questions asking the same things.
I started this to get the ball rolling.
I know a lot is missing.

What a nice and informative thread! Thank you for this.

What do you guys think of Phresh filters? I'm thinking of buying one because the cheaper one I have doesn't do very well now in late flower. Size: 4 inch. Thanks.

I haven't used Phresh, but I can say that going from 4" to 6" with a duct adapter was a noticeable improvement in odor control.
Just trying to help.
I've also used a 4"filter inside the tent>fan, light> to a 6" outside the tent. Zero odor with that combo. Only thing is that it works the fan kinda hard I think and it alters the airflow rate a little.

I do this for a living but with chemical and rubber odors in manufacturing. Just adding that perspective in case it's of use to anyone.

Absorption media like carbon requires the odor to have "dwell time" within the carbon to properly scrub it. All you need is 10-15 air changes per hour for a cannabis set up. I see people with 150 cfm fans running full bore in a 4'x4' tent. All you are doing there is creating a wind tunnel. A passive intake is all that's needed in most situations also.

Multiply the cfm of your fan X 60 and then divide by the volume of the space. The answer will be how many ACH you currently have.

For a 4x4x8 tent and a 150 cfm 6" fan. 150x60=9,000/128=70.31 - that is 70 air changes per hour. Your carbon filter isn't able to keep up.

VFD/fan Controller is very valuable here. If you have a 150 cfm fan and a 4x4x8 tent, it really needs to run as low as possible to scrub odors.

Now...changing air to cool the space and keep humidity down is another consideration, but just keep in mind that the carbon system might need to be on a different fan. But in most home-grow situations......the calc I used above is a good guide.

These are a variety of 4mm pelletized forms of carbon absorption media. Coconut shell, potassium permanganate, regular carbon, and sometimes a custom blend. These are sold in 28LB bags. Making your own carbon canister is easy and effective. I buy these from General Carbon for industrial applications.

I have a question that might be best answered here. I'm trying to figure out why my lung room stinks to hell or high water about 2-3 hours before my tent's lights out? Once the lights go off the smell is gone.

I have an 8" fan and filter on the outtake with another 8" scrubber outside the tent. They never run past 40%.

My theory is that it has something to do with transportation and humidity, but but other than that I'm kinda stumped.

any thoughts? Tips? Advice? Thanks!

What are the dims of your tent? and CFM of your fan? how old (and what type) is the carbon filter?

Its an 8x4. The 8" fan has a max cfm of around 800, but it is set to only run 20%-50% speed. The filter is rated 950cfm.

Theres a 6" intake with hepa filter box too.

They don't work well in high humidity.

800 x 60 = 48,000 / 256 = 187.5 ACH if running full - running at 25% you still have around 49 ACH. There isn't a carbon filter out there that can keep up with that. For proper carbon "dwell time" ACH should be around 10-15. The amount of air you have rushing through that carbon filter isn't allowing it to scrub the odor properly.
