Since this thread has been started, a few ppl have converted to using coolers instead of totes.
I haven't been on here or the boards for about 2 months until the last few weeks.
So ppl, post up ! lol
Let the Deep Water Cooler (DWC) Club know who you are.
I've seen some real nice modifications too !

hi flo, ok iv'e read all 15 pages & after reading everyones methods n styles i'm hooked n fascinated with the idea, question, am i missing something or how are you guys changing the water n nutes with lids on & large plant, i had a few ideas of my own, after taking clips of info from everyone on the subject, i'm curently using an ebb n flo system with drip irrigation combined in same tray, but after months n months of reading about some of the yields coming from dwc i'm interested, few more pointers is greatly appreciated, looks like another thread to sub to..lol

Glad you're interested FM !
You won't look back once you go DWC ! lol

Myself, and I believe Wedler, use wet/dry shop vacs to drain our coolers.
Mine is a small model that is built into the lid for a standard 5gal bucket from Lowes for $19.99.
Others, like NL#5, use the drain plug instead.
My coolers have a drain plug, but I would of had to make some mods to it in order to use it.

The MAIN reason why I converted to coolers, like 4 days into my 1st DWC, was I immediately noticed that I was having temp problems.
Then I noticed, while searching for a cure on 5 popular grow forums, that temp was in the top 3 reasons for DWC failures.
Even when you read most of the root or bacterial problem threads, temps that are too warm are often part of the equation.
For those that can afford chillers, I suggest you combine them with large coolers like the 100L+ sizes.
Or if like being in your garden like me AND want to save a little more money, then use frozen water bottles with some kind of weight inside at the bottom.
I use 1/2gal old juice bottles (Ocean Spray) of frozen water with 2 - 0.5lb fishing weights in each bottle.
During veg, I change my bottles every 18hrs to 24hrs before my temps touch 70F from a starting temp of 65F.
In bloom I go days before the next bottle change because of the nice shade provided by my canopy of fat buds.

Say NL#5, +REP on that set up !
I like how you ran your tubing down the middle.
BoomerBloomer57 runs his tubing through his lids too, but diagonally to prevent light leaks into the cooler.
I run mine over the top edge of the cooler with my lid resting on the tubing.
My black silicon hosing (PetCo) is so durable it doesn't even dent.
My lids also overlap the cooler edges so there's no light leaks.
After this grow, I will make a major change to where my air stones rest.
Still working on some options.
I left my lid and tubing that way so I could easily make rez changes by removing the lid.
Only to found out that MJ plants in bloom and holding what will become a half pound of DRY bud, are heavy as fuck, not to mention the long ass roots.
My roots get longer than ANY soilless plant I have ever grown and completely entangle the air tubing making it impossible to lift without bringing the air stones up with you !
And my air stones are glued down to keep them from being moved by the roots or me on accident ! lol
I wash with a BIG pot of boiling hot water, that's diluted to where it's temp is tolerable by me, and Ivory dish soap and scub the air stones with a hard bristle brush.
Rinse with tap hot water, then rinse with cool tap water plus a 16oz bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide and scrub some more.
So far so good for me.

Glad you bumped this, I missed it before. I saw Flo Grows' cooler and thought it was great. I did a couple of minor mods for a drain and level indicator. Next time, there's going to be a few new mods. Any excuse to post a picture of it.

Flow I was looking for that black hose but no hardware store or hydro store had it so i settled with clear and blu. thanks for info on petco.
and im still working a way to attach my stones down im going to try Defcom's idea of the wire ties with those sticky backs, and as for temps i drop to about 63 and a high of 67.1(no ice yet)

Beaver i tried dumping mine out by hand and after cleaning up water for 3 hours the first time i turned to the hose to get 90% empty then lift out.

but i do have one question My babys that i have in 5 gallon buckets in flower are eating up water faster then nutes or rather at the same rate? but the coolers suck up nutes in about 3-4 days....

hi neumann, like your design, i been contemplating a few ideas myself, i was wondering which way to go as far as a water lever indicator, how are you filling it, once it grows into that netting seems like it be awquard to lift the lid,

I drain and fill through the elbow after the valve. I use two rubbermaid tubs, some hose and an aquarium powerhead. I drain into one tub, them stick the powerhead onto the tubing, put the other end on the gray elbow, drop the powerhead into my prepared nutrient solution and pump it back in. Once it's full, shut the valve and it's done.

Yeah Petco and Petsmart sell they black hose they sell it as big as 25' lengths. This grow I went with black tubing from Petsmart & Petco. You can order it online at mightyhydro.com out of San Diego, CA.

How hot is it in the flower chamber??? Hot temps cause the plant to drink more water ( like humans ) its pretty normal though In flower you can lose a gallon or two every other day thats why a lot of people recommend topping off with water everyday.

hey guys i started modifying my coolers (have 6 so far). anyway i managed to get the ebb and flow fitting in to the first cooler but i realized i didnt put any pipe tape on now it is pretty well locked in there and not budging. can i just use some aquarium silicone to seal it or should i try to muscle it off and do it with pipe tape?

another question is how do i go about getting the air lines into my seat top cooler? the walls are too thick for a barb fitting

Khakiman, welcome to the Deep Water Cooler Club !

IMHO, you are putting some serious time into 6 coolers, +REP by the way, which means a lot of grows.
Go ahead, tear it down and do it right.
You may learn something else along the way.

You say your coolers are the seat top kind ?
How thick are we talking here ?
Post pics so all the members and visitors can see, help and learn.
Better yet, you can post a few step by step pics in this thread once you say, get to cooler 4 or 5 and really have the set up down.
Hell sooner if you want/can ! lmao
