thank you thank you... i pretty much almost killed the clones within the first 4 hours of me having them. i threw a humidity dome over them under the 600w and went to a family bbq, came home, and they were all drooping... i never tested how how the humidity dome got with my setup which was a big fail, cooked one clone. the center one i think never really fully recovered, and its not gonna yield much at all... either way im excited, and pleased with the results. i just hate that right now im out of town for work at a couple weeks at a time. my girlfriend has gotten real good with the whole system, and i do have it worked out so 90% of the time my res is in homeostasis and just needs buckets of nuted water to keep it topped off. ph barely swings, and ppm stays stable and refreshed. theres about 1 day of time consuming work every 8-10 days, spider mites have been a bitch, ive found out its an issue throughout michigan, but my girlfriend is a spider mite slayer. anyways, thanks again, i will try to keep an eye on some peoples journals but its really difficult. im working, goin to school full-time, doin a fair amount of ebay'ing, and a shit ton of homework... it is what it is though...

I know this probably isn't the place for this ... I was just wondering what kind of ventilation setups you all have? By that I mean how much CFM and what is in the series of the ducting. Assuming I'm using a passive intake and just want to vent the hot air from my 600w Lumatek HPS would something like this work ... Light > Ducting > Carbon Filter > Fan. Or would I be looking at a multi fan setup? I have a 7x7x7 room and each website or forum has a different way of calculating how much CFM you need. For example, some people on here use the wattage of the light your venting times 1.1 divided by the variance of the ambient room temp and the temp you want the room at. Others use the dimensions of your room. My rough calculations have me using a can fan @ over 300cfm.

last grow i used aquasheild silica blast and frozen water bottles

and it worked perfectly... reading the forum now worries me lol

Truth is, CFM's are calculated by measuring our rooms Length x Width x Height. That's Industry standard !
The Home Ventilating Institute recommends one square foot of open air inlet per 300 CFM of ventilation fan capacity.
Your space is pushing 350cfm's. That's with NO BENDS in the ducting either.
The static pressure in any duct run differs according to the duct material, number of elbows and turns.
So use rigid ducting over the flexible, or use the semi-rigid flexible like I do.
The less bends and more rigid, the more effecient the air flow.
The filter is a whole other issue in regards to fan reduction.
If you're using the whole room, then I would:
Mount a 400+ cfm fan in the ceiling JUST to exhaust the room. No bends ,just straight up and out.
Mount at least an HIGH OUTPUT 8" fan to the light, filter and all ducting for air cooling and odor.

No doubt.
Seen a few ppl just wrap the tote in the same insulated styrofoam.
Bottom, sides and top.
But, coolers are hella cheap and on sale everywhere since Fall is here now.
Might reconsider and snatch 1 or 2.

you could do exactly that with styrofoam and insulation, however im not sure how effective it would be... it would be an improvement im sure, but i dont think it would have the same insulating qualities of a cooler because of gaps which would allow spaces for air to get warm. you may want to check on craigslist to see if there is anyone giving away or selling coolers in your area, there is often people doing exactly that in my area and typically they are just lookin for $10 or something...

Flo, the actual room may be that size but I am truly only using a FRACTION of it. My actual grow space is in a corner of the room that is no bigger than 2.5 to 3 feet wide. The rest of the room is just for the nutrients, distilled water, etc. These inline / can fans aren't cheap, and I don't know if it's even feasible for me to purchase one. Also my hood is a 6" coupling -- buhhh..... logistics.

Same exact size as mine, except red and not all white. No drain plug either but don't NEED one anyways.
But that doesn't matter.
$18 matters !! lmao
I bought one for back-up or rez changes, if need be.

Can you post a pic of your grow corner perhaps ?
No doubt, those fan do cost a few pennies. How do you want to vent the grow space ?
It has to go somewhere out of the grow area.

Saw this post about using a 3" net pot to veg/start and then nesting it inside of a 5.5" net pot once you move to flower or have good roots. This would work really good for me as I have limited space/light (only a 2ft 4 bulb t-5 in a cabinet and a 400w HPS for flower). I was told to only use 5" net pots for my res, but its hard to have enough room to grow 6 or 8 clones to pick 3 good ones with all 5" pots.

my question is, is there any reason NOT to use the smaller 3" pots all the way through, or to NOT use this method of nesting the smaller pot in the bigger pot? this would allow a 10 site cloning res with 3" pots, and a 3 side 5" res for actually growing.

WTime, there's no reason not to use the 3" pots the entire grow.
Transplanting from a smaller to a larger pot works as well.
I, myself, would use a 2" and transp into the 5".

 
So basically using the smaller pot and then transplanting the pot and everything into the bigger net pot does not cause any type of root binding issues, its just about the hydroton supporting the weight of the plant right? This makes life a WHOLE lot easier and more efficient.

The more hydroton the more of a foundation to hold and maintain a fairly large plant.
Also, more holes and bigger holes in larger pots make for more root area development.

Some ppl experience probs with their 3" pots tipping over or leaning pretty bad due to the weight of dank as nugs on a good size plant.
 
excellent, so when I top a couple coming up I can drop them in 2.5" nets in clone tub and let them veg under t5 instead of cloning, recloning and killing them off to waste time. never did it before because i didnt want roots in my 2.5" cups.

I have an Dark Room DR40 tent that's 16" x 16" x 48"
Perfect for a small mother and some clones !
