The Landlord

This is too funny. Some kid gets on here asking about the electric bill of his rental with reference to growing a few plants in his closet, and pablo escabor chimes in warning him about rico laws and federal seizures. Sorry but this is a laugh out loud moment. :-P

I def understand where you're coming from pirate, understandable. But depending on the laws in his area, and the number of plants change the situation. I really doubt they will say he's earned his living and money from growing 5 plants lol.

It aint about RICO, seizures, or anything other than basic respect for others. Thats the point I was trying to make. Somehow it got twisted into a DMC. I see now where alot of peoples values lie. It's OK to risk others and thier property. I'm sorry to think differently. This has been a real eye opener.
I'll try and keep my posts confined to my grows.

Escobar out.

Never said it was okay to lie, he's just not going out of his way to tell his landlord. I don't know anyone on here that would ask their landlord if its okay to grow an illegal substance. And the landlord is not at risk since its a small grow so it's nothing to worry about.

dude i live with my brother, and his kid.. he lets me do whatever i want so long as it's in my room i have deadbolt and he doesn't have a key. because if he has no way of knowing there will be no seizure. thats the law and any time dea and such act otherwise they are breaking that law.. the gov depends on us not knowing our rights so we let injustices continue without a fight.

I'm not real familiar with all of the nuances of the new medical marijuana laws, however I do know that they do not supercede federal law. Even if you are legally allowed by the state to grow or possess, the property IS in danger of siezure by those Jackbooted Federal thugs. It's probably a stretch to think about it happening, but is still a possibility no matter how remote. It's not what you see coming that'll get ya. It's what you DON'T see coming that gets everyone. You are willing to risk a $500 dollar fine, and thats OK, but you're willing to risk others as well, and thats not. Are you a LEGAL card holding medical marijuana user recognised by the state? Even then, it's still against FEDERAL law.
You are right, it's still against Federal law, but there's no way in hell they're going to seize property not belonging to a legal medical grower who's growing a small amount. The Feds do not bother unless you're growing 100 plants or more. If it's 99 or less, they don't get involved.

Also, the landlord cannot be held responsible for illegal activity that they were completely unaware of (as long as it's something that a normal person could not have been reasonably aware of). So telling them is actually putting them in more legal danger.

That said, this is not legal advice, so make your own decision.

I got popped in the 80's. When they hit me with R.I.C.O., they seized not only MY shit, but my parents shit as well. They tried to say that I had used them to hide assests. My parents and I had to PROVE (not the other way around) that thier assests were the result of honest work, and not the proceeds of the drug trade.
That's different; the poster didn't say he was selling the cannabis, only that he wanted to grow for his own use. RICO is a federal conspiracy law and growing your own cannabis for personal use is not a conspiracy.

You just don't put other people at risk, no matter HOW SLIGHT that risk is.
In that case, not a single one of us should be driving cars on the roads. You put many hundreds of people's lives at risk every time you drive a car even 10 miles down a decently busy road.

yeah im sure there are for sure jsut as many renters as owners. i plan on renting and apartment and growing a good 9 plants at a time and im sure illg et away with it pirate.but even in teh case in which i would get caught which i have thought about in long period of time there is no way they would be able to accuse the landlord of knowing about the grow and i think that i would def speak out and say that the landlord had no knowing of the situation. i believe you are talking about pounds and pounds of weed. thee is a big differnece in that.that and why would they tape this guy talking to someone else about growing if he never talked to anybody else about it and he ony used it for himself as stated.that and he does live in canada....
i agree but also disagree with you.take thought of your landlord and just dont get caught!

I am not looking to put anyone else at risk, but if you think they are going to seize property from a landlord who has no idea what goes on inside(also has no right to know what is going on inside if it isn't destroying his property) the house once he rents I think your being overly paranoid. We recently had a bunch of rented houses raided for growing hundreds of plants and none of the owners had there properties seized. all the growers face multiple felony charges but none of the landlords have had anything taken from them.

A couple years ago ago a guy I knew who lived in Thunder Bay was expecting his grand daughter for the summer, so he cranked his electric pool heater to warm it up way earlier than the norm in that climate.. The first month pretty much tripled his normal bill, and the next it wasn't quite twice as high as normal.. But about the middle of July when he arrived home for lunch he was approached by RCMP asking nicely if they could look around due to his electric bill increase.. He complied though, so I don't know if they had a warrant already or not..
June's increase could have accounted to about a 7kW garden in a 3 bedroom with gas everything.. But that was Canada..

400W though is pretty much a personal amount of light.. It would be dang tough to prove conspiracy with a property owner if there was none.. And as far as the electric bump goes, 400W can be laundered even in a bachelor apartment.. Maybe you're a drunk who spent too much money on booze to afford cfl's, so you use cheap bulbs.. And maybe you pass out alot with the lights on.. Maybe subconsciously you do it purposely because of some phobia, the law can't judge you for that.. I lived that life for spurts in university, (plus I was burning about 1.5kW actually growing) and I never had the RCMP at my door..

Not true. If you live within 1000ft of a school or public housing, then cultivating any amount could be prosecuted under federal jurisdiction as well.

I aint believing this thread. You KNOW she wouldn't be down, yet you will still do it. WHY??? Just 'cuz you want to and think it's OK? I dont agree with the marijuana laws. I want to grow also, but you'd best believe I asked my wife if she was OK with it, because anything that happens, good or bad, will affect her even tho I own the house. If she had said no, I'd be stuck trying to find a place outside. It's called repect, and it's what responsible adults do.

It's one thing to post about breaking the law as we are, but to admit that you're going to do so no matter who gets fucked sorta speaks volumes about you as a person. I don't know you, you're probably cool as hell, but your attitude towards others sucks. I'm glad I don't know you with that attitude. I believe that you'd "do what YOU gotta do to save yourself" if anything bad went down. It's obviously you care only about yourself, and getting what YOU want.

I'm not real familiar with all of the nuances of the new medical marijuana laws, however I do know that they do not supercede federal law. Even if you are legally allowed by the state to grow or possess, the property IS in danger of siezure by those Jackbooted Federal thugs. Even then, it's still against FEDERAL law.
Just 'cuz you are "fairly poor, and can't afford chronic" or because "you don't see the point of taking pills (which you can legally do with a prescription) when pot is so much better" doesn't give you license to risk other peoples property and/or other assests. And unless you are LEGALLY allowed to do what you are doing, FEDERAL and state laws both allow for the siezure/forfeiture of property and/or other assets usd in the commission of a felony. It DOES happen. Granted, rarely, but it does.
What you do with your stuff and your life is your business. If it starts fucking with me or mine, it becomes MY business. Be glad I aint your LL.

I aint trying to be the "Moral Police" here, but theres some things that are just wrong by any rational persons standards, and this would be one of those situations.
When you have your own place, grow all you want, Hell, SELL all you want. What you do is none of my biz, Just don't let it affect me or mine.
We may be breaking the law by growing, but we are choosing to do so because we are the only ones who would be affected, and I'm assuming that nobody here condones doing so at other peoples expense. Hell, if we get caught the cops will make us look bad enough, they don't need any more ammunition to make us look worse in the publics eye.

I'm done preaching now, I am sorry if I offended anyone.[/q

I draw the line when ppl rent a place and just gut it to suit growing a massive crop, then just bolt with their harvest and leave the mess for the land-lord..

this thread was way to funny.

Back to the original question, YES switching to CFLs will help immensly. get the 7 watt little tikes and walk around in the dim light and squint if you have to. its incredible how much money you can save by simply monitoring your bad electrical consumption habits. if yer running only 400 watts and some other accessories she may even notice a decrease from the last tenant. seriously. it happened to me. If you look at how much money is wasted in electrical comsumption its easy to see how being frugal can SAVE, even with a small grow setup.

dont take long showers if you have electric water heater, dont use the dishwasher, hang dry your clothes, use quicker cycles on washing machine, (or go to the coin op every week if its close) simply turn OFF the lights behind your lazy ass when you leave a room (the porch lights and back door light too, turn those fuckers OFF at night) <---im reffering to myself here, i was horrible for all of that!
dont leave unused electronics ON, even stand-by comsumes power. turn yer PC off when not using it, even if yer coming back soon. Buy a cheap bar b q with a side burner and cook with that slut as much as you can!!!and use the electric oven/stove/range as LITTLE as possible. dont set your fridge as cold as it was previously, and freeze all your meats as soon as you get them. you could buy a small energy efficient fridge and unplug the big electrosucker fridge.

oh and dont stand in front of the fridge with the door open while deciding what you want to eat.....cuz listen when you close the door. 9 times out of ten the compressor will kick on cuz you just let all the cold air out!!

be smart and you will SAVE yourself/landlord money.
