The Landlord

Hey I just recently moved down the highway about 40 minutes from my house for school (horticultural tech.). Where I live now I got a landlord who is really chillen but never the less wouln't be down with me running my grow room here... but I want to anyways. I know usually this is pretty simple I just set up the room and get to growing.

My problem is that all the bills for the house are forewarded to her, If I am running a 400 HPS for 12-18 hours a day with the fan and such do you think that she will notice the increase in the bill and be suspicious. And if so do methods like replacing old lightbulbs with CFLS cut down energy usage?

Thanks, anyone. I appreciate all the help I can get

a 400w bulb is going to cost you around 8 KWh of energy running 18 hours a day. 5.3 running 12/12.

At my cost of .068 / KWh thats $0.54 a day. Your cost will vary. For me, this means $16.80 a month running 18/6. I run 24 for Lowryders, so growing those costs $22.20 a month. Those are just my Flowering chamber costs (lights only). I consume another 200w on ventilation, 216w for Veg, and there are always those misc things, like circulating fans (no clue on power usage).

I would say that my power bill has jumped $30-40 a month. Noticeable to me, and If i had a roommate that sucked down that much, i would want a few bones for the extra power.

400w is 400w whether its CFL or HPS, they'll cost about the same. HPS will give you waay more bang for the buck. But fuck all that.....WHY in the world would you do that to your otherwise "Chillin" landlord? Why couldn't you just give him/her the respect of not putting the property in jeopardy? Thats just plain wrong in my book.

Hey thanks for the response everyone to clear things up im not growing anything with cfl lights, i was asking about them in regards to putting them in other light fixtures. The reason why i want to do this is because im fairly poor and cant really afford chronic but im also a self medicated medicinal user because I dont see the point in taking pills cause weed is so good. I dont intend to put the property in jeopardy, I will nly be growing 3 plants at any given time because thats not much of a crime up here, worth the risk of a 500$ fine to me

I aint believing this thread. You KNOW she wouldn't be down, yet you will still do it. WHY??? Just 'cuz you want to and think it's OK? I dont agree with the marijuana laws. I want to grow also, but you'd best believe I asked my wife if she was OK with it, because anything that happens, good or bad, will affect her even tho I own the house. If she had said no, I'd be stuck trying to find a place outside. It's called repect, and it's what responsible adults do.

It's one thing to post about breaking the law as we are, but to admit that you're going to do so no matter who gets fucked sorta speaks volumes about you as a person. I don't know you, you're probably cool as hell, but your attitude towards others sucks. I'm glad I don't know you with that attitude. I believe that you'd "do what YOU gotta do to save yourself" if anything bad went down. It's obviously you care only about yourself, and getting what YOU want.

I'm not real familiar with all of the nuances of the new medical marijuana laws, however I do know that they do not supercede federal law. Even if you are legally allowed by the state to grow or possess, the property IS in danger of siezure by those Jackbooted Federal thugs. It's probably a stretch to think about it happening, but is still a possibility no matter how remote. It's not what you see coming that'll get ya. It's what you DON'T see coming that gets everyone. You are willing to risk a $500 dollar fine, and thats OK, but you're willing to risk others as well, and thats not. Are you a LEGAL card holding medical marijuana user recognised by the state? Even then, it's still against FEDERAL law.
Just 'cuz you are "fairly poor, and can't afford chronic" or because "you don't see the point of taking pills (which you can legally do with a prescription) when pot is so much better" doesn't give you license to risk other peoples property and/or other assests. And unless you are LEGALLY allowed to do what you are doing, FEDERAL and state laws both allow for the siezure/forfeiture of property and/or other assets usd in the commission of a felony. It DOES happen. Granted, rarely, but it does.
What you do with your stuff and your life is your business. If it starts fucking with me or mine, it becomes MY business. Be glad I aint your LL.

I aint trying to be the "Moral Police" here, but theres some things that are just wrong by any rational persons standards, and this would be one of those situations.
When you have your own place, grow all you want, Hell, SELL all you want. What you do is none of my biz, Just don't let it affect me or mine.
We may be breaking the law by growing, but we are choosing to do so because we are the only ones who would be affected, and I'm assuming that nobody here condones doing so at other peoples expense. Hell, if we get caught the cops will make us look bad enough, they don't need any more ammunition to make us look worse in the publics eye.

I'm done preaching now, I am sorry if I offended anyone.

a couple things. First Ill say I see where you're comming from in regard to respect, and that i am not in everything for myself, I can truly say im not a selfish person, and thats why im looknig for advice on here which you gave me. I dont have any of the equiptment out here yet like this is all going own because there are a lot of variables involved.

The property situation goes like this. I have no idea who owns the property, nor do i ever get to know unless i run into them one day. My landlord works for a property management companyy and they are paid to deal with us and the house for a cut in the total cost for the month (rent and utilities for 1200$/m). Now if i ever were to get busted which i do believe is highly unlikley I dont think anyone is losing out. I would have to pay my fine and spend the long day or two in court which is punishment enough. The sole property owners are removed from the situation and the worst that happens is that the property anagement company loses the property which I am not too concerned about because they manage a lot of shit, if the man is making less money ill pay that ticket wearing a silver sequene costume.

and i dont "Know" that she wouldnt be down i just assume so cause whos landlord is?

The law cannot seize the property of a non accomplice. IE as long as the owner doesn't know what is going on then the law can't do shit to his property. I say grow that shit out, fuck man tell em you got a new computer and a big screen TV if they ask. otherwise the light aint gonna make a big dent in the electric bill. specially if you run it at night during the Off-Peak hours and replace all of your power sucking incandescent lights with CFL. I run 1200 watts of light plus about 500 more with acc. and its only costing avg extra $40 a month.

Dude, they can, and usually will, sieze anything and everything they can remotely justify taking. Whether or not they hold onto it is another story. Even if the "non-accomplice" gets the property back, they will not do so without hiring an attorney, and suffering thru court hearings and embarassment, not to mention the financial losses incurred. I got popped in the 80's. When they hit me with R.I.C.O., they seized not only MY shit, but my parents shit as well. They tried to say that I had used them to hide assests. My parents and I had to PROVE (not the other way around) that thier assests were the result of honest work, and not the proceeds of the drug trade. And they (Prosecutors office) did that to my folks for the sole purpose of letting me know that they could and would do it!! There was absolutely no indication that my folks ever profitted from my actions.
If the court decides to return the siezed property to the owner, all they will get (besides whats left of the property) is a "Gee, we're sorry, heres your shit back". Soveriegn immunity say you can't sue them (under MOST circumstances). They will still be out all the money spent to defend thier property.
They will sieze all they can, and rely on the fact that 90% of all that will be thiers by default. Not many people can afford a good attorney, or they didn't figure the need for attorneys fees into the equation. Almost all property sold at auction COULD have been recovered by the owners IF they had good representation.
Never say "They can't do that!" They WILL do anything they want, and unless thier conduct is questioned in a court of law, they will usually get away with whatever malfeasance they commited. Courtroom Justice has absolutely nothing to do with the truth, only what can be proven. And given enough evidence, and correct spin, one can easily prove a lie if there is little to nothing saying otherwise.

I understand you had a seriously fucked up personal experience, but this kid is talking about a rental and a property manager. The off property owners will not have their home seized if this kid grows pot there. And, I doubt the owners keep their boats and cars on the property in question. A non relative renter is a lot different than an adult child living at home. It sounds like he's taking all the risk. Chill Winston!

P.S. that really sucks they hit you with rico for pot, holly shit. What part of the country was that in if you don't mind me asking. Glad to see attitudes about pot slowly changing across the country in all but the hardcore totalitarian mindsets.

Why don't you tell them you're trying to establish/re establish your credit and want to put the energy bill into your name? Then you would be the only one to see it.

I'm chill. It just hit me wrong at his "cavalier" attitude about it. Didn't mean to get on a moral soapbox. Sorry all.
I was an adult child (still am), but NOT living at home. I hadn't even spoken to my parents for several years when this all went down. It was well known to the Feds that there was no love lost between me and my family. In fact, had my family known what I was into, they'd have turned me in themselves. It cost me (and my folks) several thousand dollars to defend thier home and accounts. Even tho I didn't like them at all, what the feds did to them was wrong. They wanted me to roll on some people, and that seemed to them like a good way to go about it. They should have chosen to fuck with someone I cared about.
We are talking about an operation my father-in-law and I had in the late 70's, early 80's. Suffice it to say that they siezed a couple tons of Jamaican, several boats and aircraft, not to mention froze my accounts, and those of my parents (Out of pure spite, just because they could). They hit us with RICO 'cuz they were just getting a feel of how to apply it to the drug trade, and it enhanced sentencing, and just the term "Racketeer influenced/corrupt organization" sounded alot more sinister to the general public. They got alot of mileage in the press. All this went down in S Fla in '83. We also brought a few loads of blow from Columbia. They KNEW, but couldn't prove it. It cost me a small fortune to get only 6 years. That wouldn't happen in this day and time.
I know it's just a few plants, and that in all probability things will be fine. It just pisses me off when they sound like they don't give a rats ass about others, as long as they get thiers. There is too little respect given these days. I would NEVER knowingly put anyone else in a position they would lose out due to my actions, even my folks (who I cant stand as people). It wasn't always so, tho. So I guess dude needs to be cut SOME slack. I just hope it gets him to start thinking about the effects his actions COULD have on others, intentional or not.

Nothing is going to happen to the landlord but you are extremely naive. First off no one in there wildest imagination thinks there going to get caught. In a lot of cases there right, but in some cases not! It all depends on where you live if it is out west along the coast then probably not bad. Anywhere else your life will be totally fucked! Be very careful and tell NO ONE. First rule of growing and most important. Now about the power bill have you considered the digital ballast. I don't know the figures but it is supposed to use less electricity and cut your cost. Maybe someone on here has the stats. If you are in a cold climate you can use the excuse your running a new space heater and maybe it is causing the increase. People get caught up with wattages and such but remember that most hair dryers use more wattage than any single HPS/MH ballast. Good luck

thepirate, did you say they seized a couple tons?? If so, that is completely different from what this person is doing. Of course they're gonna do what they did to you when you have that large of quantity, this is more of just a private grow it sounds like.

Just how is it different in the eyes of the law? Granted we're talking extremes here, but the principles of law apply equally. If they get two folks talking about growing on tape, and one of those two go out and lets say buys alot of ferts and soil, that constitutes a conspiracy, and an effort to further that conspiracy. Believe it or not thats all the Feds have to have to hit you with RICO. Conspiracy is a crime in and of itself. They don't need to get you with product.
That being said, I have already apologised for jumping dudes shit. BUT he needs to know (and maybe even care) how his actions COULD POSSIBLY affect other people. If you were his landlord, and you read what he posted, how would YOU feel? You just don't put other people at risk, no matter HOW SLIGHT that risk is. He said that he doesn't THINK anything will happen, and anyways it's just a management company, nobody would be out anything. Maybe HE'S willing to risk it, but what about the unwilling/unknowing others involved who had no choice in the matter?
I have property out of state that is under management. It wouldn't be the management compant that would lose, it would be ME.
Dude above is right. Alot of naive thinking here. Don't EVER say it can't happen And we are just talking RICO here. The feds are just starting to use the PATRIOT act to combat drugs. Once that is in full swing, watch your asses.
I overreacted to this, and for that I am sorry. But to say with any certainty that it wouldn't or couldn't happen is just plain dumb. AND disrespectful to even be willing to subject someone else to the POSSIBILITY of backlash from our actions. Thats the point I was making. Respect, and Kharma.

Peace! :leaf:
