I wish I had read through this entire thread before I started my grow. I was working on building a hydro system, bought everything but the pump. Then I got impatient and went with soil. I had looked at the first page and said "nah, this isn't for me, I don't have the space to grow in huge buckets". Now I see how easy this is. Last night I started reading and around page 10 I started germinating a couple more seeds to grow along side of the 2 soil plants I've got going so I can see the difference. I've got a bag of perlite that I used to mix with potting soil and a bunch of styrofoam coffee cups laying around (about 24 oz size I think) but I'll talk the wife into going to the dollar store tonight for some pails.

Here's my plan:

Once the seeds are germinated I'll plant them in rockwool cubes.
After they sprout I'll put them in 100% perlite and move them into my totes.
I've got the bottles of Fox Farm hydro nutes I'll use after a couple weeks.
After a few months of veg, flower, drying. I'll smoke it up!

Feel free to check out my first grow in my sig.

I wasn't thrilled with the growth of my smaller plant, seemed a little stunted, so I transplanted it into a hempy bucket I made from an old coffee cup.

Pic 1 is the plant from last night
Pics 2&3 are right after transplanting (the blue cup is the overflow catcher for now)

I'm going to be getting a bunch of bag seed this weekend. What's the best way to start new seeds? I've still got a bunch of soil and peat moss cups, or should I buy some rockwool?

I've got 3 months worth of mistakes to learn from, I'd like my next grow to go alot smoother. I'm going to they hydro shop this weekend, just tell me what I need.

As of last night, one of the two seeds I started germinating to use in HB has sprouted a tiny root. I'm going to try converting some unused planters into HB's by plugging the drainage holes in the bottom and cutting a hole in the side. The planters are 4" wide (inside dimension) by about 6" tall. I know these are on the small side to complete a grow in, but I have limited space in my grow box and I'd like to fit 4 plants in it and keep them a little smaller. I also plan on doing a SoG style so the smaller plant size should work fine. For that size container do you think a 1/2 inch hole about an inch from the bottom would be enough?

1/2 In should be fine, it isnt the size of the hole, it is just big enough to drain, without getting clogged.

One of my plants has got a root growing out of the hole on the bucket. Its sticking out about a half inch. Should i cut it or let it die by its self?
They must grow pretty quick, it wasn't there 8 hours ago when i last checked.

Hello, I have been watching this thread for awhile now, and I am going to give it a shot!! So please help!!! LOL.......... I have all my plants in soil, and decided when my clones rooted to try some this way! Last night I bought some perlite and 16 oz cups. I took one of my rooted clones, put a small hole about an inch up from the bottom, filled the cup with perlite, put my clone in! I am going to feed with Peters Professional. 24-8-16 for veg, and then I have some alaska morbloom that is 0-10-10 for bloom. For watering and feeding I was thinking of going, feed-water-water heavy-feed-water-water heavy-feed? So does this sound like a good plan??? Thanks for the help!! :)

Fantastic!!! Thanks so much for your input!! I can't wait to see if this helps my yield. What are peoples opinions on how well the plants grow in the Hempy as compared to soil? Will they grow faster and better? One more question, what ph do I want to keep it at? Thanks!!!! I can't wait to see the results!!!

keep ph between 5.8-6.5 anything outside these ranges will cause lockouts....hempy is faster an hevier yeilding than soil..period....this has been proven many many times....the growth is comparable to dwc/swc...peace az
