yes smaller containers would be best to begin with. your estimate for root growth is what i would guess as well no big deal they will be fine.

yeah when i transplanted i took them from their potting soil into a mcdonalds sweet tea cup as it was still in veg and easy to transplant...

Ok, I'll reiterate the HB method:

Get a container with no holes - the bigger your container, the bigger your roots, the bigger your plant, the bigger your yield, conceptually anyway. Once you have your container, make a hole about 1" from the bottom. One hole only. The size of your hole should be proportional to the size of your container and how "fine" your medium is (more on this later). Usually a hole between 1/2" to 1" would do. Now the space inside your container from the bottom to the hole will serve as a reservoir for your water and nutes.

Now you fill your container with your SOIL LESS medium - I used equal parts perlite and vermiculite. Remember neither of these mediums contain any nutes whatsoever. They are only there to provide support for the plants as the roots grow. If it weren't for the medium, your plant would just topple onto its side.

Now water your medium with PHed water and VERY light nutes. I stress LIGHT because you don't want to burn your precious little plant. I start out with about 1/4 of the recommended dose. Add the water until you see water coming out of the hole on the side. I water my plants in my bath tub and let it drain there before putting it back in my grow cab. There will be water sitting at the bottom on the container after the excess drains.

Next, you put your seedling or clone into medium. For this method, I'd recommend you raise your seedlins in rockwool or peat moss cubes or similar. I'd stay away from raising your seedlings in soil (just harder to work with with transplanting). Personally, I think using the HB method on clones is best.

Now once your seedlings/clones are in, that's pretty much it. In the beginning, you should add water with nutes once a week. Even though the tiny plant doesn't need all that water and probably doesn't even have roots that reach down that far into the reservoir, adding new water is critical to prevent stem rot. By adding the new water, you are displacing the "stale" water and refreshing the oxygen in the reservoir (hence you don't need a air stone and bubbler). Once your plant gets bigger, you may need to water more often. I'm at 2x week on my flowering plant. Also, slowly increase your nutes as you water each time until you are at the recommended dosage but monitor your plants carefully as you increase the nutes to ensure you aren't burning them. If you notice nute burns, flush with plain water and go back to the lower dosage and increase slowly again.

Finally, you should flush the plant occasionally to remove any salt buildups. On the plant in the above pics, I flushed once in flowering and have been giving it plain PHed water the last week and will do so until I cut it. This will greatly improve the taste

Hope this helps. Good luck!!
How do you flush the plant if it only has that little hole on the side .. seems like alot of the stuff would stay at the very bottom of the container?..
sorry .. just trying to figure this out

Legalize that is the point of it. That's why you drill the hole 2 inches from the bottom so that there is a res. at the bottom so that when the roots start growing deep into the pot they hit the res and at that point they are getting tons of the nutes and water that has collected at the bottom giving it a boost on grow. When your watering you want to water just enough that you start seeing a little run off through the side hole that you drilled. This way you know that you have just enough water for the plant and in the res. It may seem too easy which is what confuses people and makes it seem difficult but it truly is one of the easiest ways to grow, it's nearly flaw-free...I say nearly cuz there still ways to mess up like over-feeding with nutes and such...just make sure your water is ph'd between 6.7 and 6, that is what has been working for me along with the lucas formula with GH Flora...

To flush all you have to do is dump in a heavy amount of water till you see it coming through the res and you do this 2 or 3 times...

hey guys question for you hempy lovers..

Where can i find the big bags of perlite???I remember reading some time back on this collective that Home depot carries big green bags not the small 8qt ones but the really big ones, I asked one of the sales associates there and he had no idea what i was talking about. Im in the eastcoast US can anyone tell me where i can maybe find it??? ordering over internet and for the small bags which seem to be the only ones they sell is getting expensive.

Thanks :peace:

I was wondering what the verdict was on using soil nutes for this? I've read that you can let them disolve into water and then use them.

I am using Jack's Classic All Purpose (20-20-20)
http://www.jacksclassic.com/all_purpose.html

They're water soluble.
You can do that but it's alot easier to just buy a pack of some GH Flora or Fox Farms in that case. Bud Blood works well also. As far as the Jack's Id watch how much you feed your grow, you def. dont wanna give your plants any nute burn that seems a lil heavy ta me. Then again, I could be wrong so opinions?

I'm on the east coast too and I had the same problem went to home depot, lowes and wm and couldn't find any horticulture grade perlite but they did have Miracle Grow perlite in the small bags which you can use but should def rinse ta get all those MG extras out.

If you can look up hydro shops in your area, do that. You can just try and google them and they may pop up somewhere around your area. I found one and they had everything from ballasts to nutes ta soil n perlite...I hear about some shops are expensive or cheap in my case I found the latter...

Check at local hardware stores like mom and pop stores in your town. hey sometimes offer garden seeds and supplies in the summer time, load up on it or get one bag and rinse after every harvest. It is re-usable :hump:

I actually just remembered that I also went to a nursery but they said they were sold out so if you know of a local nursery you can always check in there too...

I never see anything but little bags of perlite at Ace and places like that. Big retail nurseries sell perlite, but charge more than you should spend. The local hydro store here in Minnesota sells bushels of perlite for 19.95 or the Fox Farm large grain stuff for 29.95. I need to buy some more soon!:hump:

Get your hempy on.

ace harware, if you have one near by, $26 for a big ol bag of it.

OKay well I read through, And I mean actually READ THROUGH the first 30 pages... I simply couldnt read any more, and started skimming....

But in light of what Ive seen, being Im about to hook up this 400w HPS
this "Hempy Fuckit" method seems real sweet. So I wanted to propose
my general outline, And probably ask a couple questions that some smartass
is going to say "read the thread, use the search" in response but its ok:

--I was thinking getting 4, one gallon containers, Holes 2" up, 1/2"dia.
Rockwool cubes to get the already germed (little root in paper towel)
started up a couple inches, Then bury that in the 100% perlite filled
containers. 1 cube/sprout per container.

Also thought about a scrog setup like a simple frame of dowel rods
and some chicken wire over maybe have it adjustable height to
use in conjunction with the hempy setup since some folks done
it and had decent results.

1:joint: Do i need the rockwool cubes or can i put a seedling that has its tap root poppin out directly into the perlite like you would soil.

2:joint: I have jacks classic(peters) water soluble nutes for soil I think veg is 20-20-20 and flower is 10-30-20. Would it be bad for my finished product
to use these nutes, Or should I suffer and buy hydro nutes.

3:joint: What nutes would you reccomend and would cha-ching be a wise choice for the last 2-3 weeks of flower?

4:joint: I want no more than a 2.5'-3'ft plants, If I do 4 plants, Hempy, Scrog, my CFL setup for veg, 400hps 12/12 (they will both be pulling duty seperatly) what height and what time is best to introduce the screen, and should it be done around the time you start 12/12? Example I could put the screen to be hit about 12 inches plant growth, But start 12/12 around the 6 inch of plant growth area. Sound about right for 1 gallons?

Thats it for now... Because I think Im definatly going to go hempy, Just not sure on whether or not to scrog it or not seems like it gets better yeild. And as far as the nutes go, Ive always been unsettled by them
and despite what I read on them seems like the only way I take it in
is to just ask about them even though they are asked about trillions
of times over and some of the nutes are freakin expensive as shit.

I also might do 2 soil, 2 hempy, and scrog them all just for comparison
sakes, but that is depending on a few factors that will be decided on.

Thanks for da help!:joint::joint:
I will always +rep any good people.

1. Start with the cubes 1st (peat moss works well too) and I've always find it better once you've outgrown the rockwool get like a 32 oz. cup/McSweetTea Cup or a party cup and poke a hole through the bottom and make a mini-hempy jus fill it with the perlite so that it'll form a decent root system for the 1 gallon. Once it reaches the reserve it'll have the same effects. Then transplant or just cut off the bottom of that bitch and put it in, but it's all up ta you just what i've been doin'.

2/3. My personal opinion those nutes are a little too strong for veg. I use gh flora with the lucas formula and im going to begin adding molasses as well but works good for me. Some use fox farm or bud blood but I would def invest in the nutes. The buckets are inexpensive as it is, why not? Remeber GH is just my personal preference.

4. Not much experience with scrog grows so someone else can lend you a hand with that one. But what your saying seems like a good plan to me from what I think...

Don't think to heavily on the hempy idea its designed to be simple. But def. have fun with it bro. Here's some sample pics of what I'm talkin' bout from lumberjacks old grow...

:fire:

Much thanks for those pics, That one is a motivator:hump:

1.:joint: I like the idea of leavin the cups sticking up after cutting the bottom off, Gives the tap root some more height to grow, Which Ive read the taller the container the better... Now the hole of course should be what couple inches up on the side even on the McDTea cups correct? And how long did you let them chill in the cups like that, Before movin up to the final resting place and cuttin the bottoms? I know it could be different for different strain but just wondering how you judged it cant hurt to ask.

2.:joint: Okay well with the lucas formula, theres a veg 5-10, flower 8-16, Per gallon. Ive heard something about it gets hard if you dont shake it regularly (floranova)
..But the question on that really I guess would be if you dont use the whole gallon say I mixed up a gallon and made sure the water/nute was properly
mixed according to the ratios, And then had half the gallon left over... How long can it sit mixed without going bad. And part 2 of the question is
How often do you have to water? If I had to cut down to half gallons I guess it would be 2.5/5 and 4/8 values...

3.:joint: Last one, When is the safest time to introduce the nutes to the plant... I dont want to prematurely burn em up like the last ones.

Thanks alot bro youve already been real helpful + on the reps for ya.
:clap::eyesmoke:

This hempy is gettin me excited, After my last failed grow I decided to get the 400w HPS and really try to get a little more serious this time this method seams like the gateway...

1. For me till it reached the bottom of those cups was about 3 weeks if remember right, and the root base was solid so I had no real worries when it came to that. Your right about it being diff from strain to strain but the best way to judge it when you KNOW it has reached the bottom your plant will GROW. And it will be noticeable that it has finally reached the reserve it will become just as noticeable when it reaches the bottom of that gallon container (and just incase your using a clear gallon jug cover it or tape it with something clear isnt good for the roots, just making sure of that one). And yes mc'd cups or chic-fil-a cups work well they're styrofoam so easy to cut and easy to poke a hole into that's why i use them...

2. The hard thing with not shaking i've never experienced that but I guess that jus cuz I shake mines regularly just because I use it (something about that sentence could be percieved the wrong way lol). But i guess just make sure you do if that is true. and instead of just using the formula for a gallon use 1/2 that, less waste of nutes then you dont have to worry about the expiration problem or anything like that...and as for part 2 of that you water every day till it reaches that reserve you need to make sure you do until those roots reach the reserve and that's when you can begin to slow down and water every 2-3 days depending on how thirsty/hungry your plant is. During veg I feed every 2 or 3 days though don't want too overfeed and cause nute burn some may want to double check this if they want if they feed everyday I just take my precautions till it reaches that reserve. But remember once it does hit that reserve you'll be feeding it with nutes as you water every 2-3 days. As for ph makes sure its between 6.8 and 5.8 is usually a good number some use r/o water or reverse osmosis and some use distilled with this grow other jus plain tap water and with that some leave it out a day prior so the chlorine can be vaped out as for me the water fresh out the sink is usually good so jus double check on your water if you want...they sell ph meters at lowes/home depot places like that...

3. Safest time, I always say 3 weeks in ,when root growth is solid and the plant looks burly and strong enough where it looks as if it wants/needs nutes...if it looks like your plants dont want the nutes and you do get a lil burn or nething like that all you have to do with the hempy bucket is just flush it, just another way the hempy grow is made easy...

Good luck def. make a journal if u want and post those pics up I'd love to see the grow as sure everyone else would as well...hempy grow is good n easy, and hard to fail so dont worry about it much just keep it as simple as it is...My hempy is outside so I have to deal with some other issues sometimes but as far as the grow it's good; matter of fact I just started some seedlings this morning for my 2nd grow and next week ill be throwin in 3 more so im getting as excited as you right now ha. have fun & i hope this helped...

Well, just from 1-2 weeks in perlite I've started seeing the big time advantages of it over soil... the roots are MUCH healthier... I'm talking tons of thick, bright white roots compared to the thin, scraggly, discolored roots in soil.... the extra oxygen from the perlite + the hydro nutes does wonders for the root system. I actually took the plants I had in 5 gallon buckets and transplanted them into mini 2 liter hempy bucket bottles for a while.... making it easier to water/using less nutes/allowing the roots to hit the reservoir faster..... going to leave them like this for a while until the root systems and plants are bigger and then will probably put them back into the 5 gallon buckets eventually. I removed some of the plants I have as many have started showing preflowers... got rid of the males.... right now I have 11 plants in 2 liter hempys and 3 of them are confirmed females, and I think atleast most of the other 7 will probably be female as well... Also, I've been thinking about it, and I think clones would root really well in 2 liter bottles (or 32 oz cups like the guy up above a few posts) filled with perlite hempy style..... The cuttings would get tons of oxygen and if you kept it moist I think it'd work really well. I think I'm going to try it when the plants are bigger and ready to take some cuttings. Have any of you tried rooting clones in mini hempys like this?
