Texas weighs allowing open carry of handguns

I'm under the impression that open carry is the norm. And that concealed is the permitted expansion on that. I see people open carrying all the time.

Any government building and a lot of private business doesn't allow it. Maybe that's what this bill means.

Ever see the videos of the guys going all over the place with their guns?

From the article:

And if Texas, which allows concealed handguns, embraces open carry — rolling back a 140-year ban — it would be the largest state to have done so.

They currently allow concealed carry, but not open carry.

It's still going to be illegal to shoot people. What's the big deal?
Loosely quoting some cops I've heard speak on this subject, it plainly and simply scares people. And while carrying a concealed handgun is cumbersome and uncomfortable, carrying openly is easy. Thus, many more people will be armed and ready to shoot if they are allowed to carry openly.

More Wyatt Earp wannabes with guns equates to more stupid shootings by people who've never been trained properly in the first place.

Cops carry guns. Are people scared of them?

Ask any cop you want. All the ones I've talked to or heard speak on this subject say that open carry is a bad idea.

Even the ultra-rightwing NRA shooting instructor who issued me my concealed carry "pre-license" (so to speak) heavily advised AGAINST open carry.

Well apparently some people think it's a good idea.

"Open carry drew wide support in the 2014 statewide election, and at least six bills have already been filed for the upcoming session, which starts in January. Abbott has already pledged to sign one into law if sent to his desk."

I don't live in Texas. I'd assumed Texas ' s laws weren't more liberal than my states.

Yes, the Wyatt Earp wannabes. Those who want to parade around with their sidearms in restaurants, Wal Mart, etc. With NO training. Just a bunch of testosterone and a "hold my beer and watch this" mentality.

Several of this type of people had themselves a real good time a couple years ago here. Several 20-something guys were hanging out at a local parts store one Friday evening after work. They all had their handguns and holsters laying around, and figured they would have a quickdraw contest. With a "judge" to say who won each time.

They drew against each other, just like in a real gunfight. But their guns were unloaded, right?

Wrong. One of the fucking idiots left a round in the chamber of his semi-auto pistol, and killed his friend with a shot through the heart in a quickdraw battle.

These are the kinds of fucking idiots who get a hard on when they hear someone speak of "open carry". Those lunatics shun concealed carry because it's cumbersome and uncomfortable. And it's not as "cool". But allow the fuckers to carry openly and show off, and they'll jump at the chance.

And we're all much less safe.

Why can't people be who they want to be? As long as they aren't shooting innocent people this shouldn't be an issue.

Easy solution ... Don't enter a quick draw contest.

easIER solution: don't let the fuckers carry a deadly toy around their waist for everyone to see. Let them get their self esteem from something other than the fact that they could kill someone with so little effort in a split second, intentional or not.

Kind of like driving a car.
