In other news...I did finally hear back from the insurance agent...

If you’re not aware, I was hit by a car while riding my bike on November 20th. I wasn’t really injured beyond bruising, but my cheap $200 Dicks sporting goods cruiser was totaled.

So I made a claim with the guys insurance company, and I was asking for $750 for the price of my bike, the motor, and battery all together.

They finally settled on $1050. I think I’m okay with that. So that should be enough money to build the fat tire bike finally. And the battery and motor from the wrecked bike might work on a cheap $125 Walmart cruiser. I dunno, maybe. Right? Who knows. Maybe.

Lol good luck! Undoubtedly it will be some of the most fun you’ve had in a LOOOONG time. I was instantly hooked. My first ride, I had already decided to build a more expensive bike...which I’m able to do now because I finally got my insurance claim from the bike accident.

I didn't have a good tire here and was playing with the spacers, seeing if I could make it work, before packing it up to return. Now I have tires here, and need to pick up a couple ss spacers, so I will get it mounted up soon, and going to order a torque arm. Did you use a torque arm?

It should be relatively easy / fun to build, and l could see where this could get addictive and I may wind up building a few! This one is the trial run!! Hopefully no crashes!

Yeah I used a torque arm, and I’ve also crashed a few times already. Like I said, be careful. Wear a helmet, don’t trust a cheap bike with your life...lol

lord knows I do, and I’ve already dodged a few bullets.

Yeah I don't plan on getting too wild...Just nice to go on some extended rides. I have a motorcycle if I want to die.

I'm sure you are right. It's funny, I have the motorcycle, a little Honda single cylinder, and I rode it only once all last summer, but rode my POS bicycle about 5-6 x a week. It's more relaxing to me, and a lot safer.

Do you think this battery is sufficient? The seller says 48 volt with a minimum of 14.5 ah, and this is 20ah...I ordered one similar from China but the guys not responding, nor has he shipped, and I'd like to be able to test my motor since it only has a 30 day warranty. Seems to have sold a bunch and they have a 1 year warranty...Going to Samsung or LG pretty much doubles the price, with the same warranty, although I know they are better.

IF that battery is actually 20ah, then it’ll be sufficient. But there are caveats attached to cheap batteries. And for the record, a battery made out of Samsung or LG cells at 20ah would usually be closer to $500-$700

The problem With Chinese cells and the resulting batteries they make up, is that they over rate the MaH rating. So the battery you posted is 13s7p, that mean they took individual 18650 lithium ion batteries, wired 7 packs together in series with 13 cells each.

Those individual cells would have to be rated 3000 MaH each, and the problem with that is those cells are expensive. A 13s7p battery takes 91 cells, and it’s hard to find reliable 18650s rated at an actual 3000MaH for cheap.

For comparison, I bought my 18ah battery for $275 on sale, and I’m about to buy a 35ah battery on sale for $400, normally $500+

I dunno, cheap batteries sure are tempting. Let me know how it works out. It will undoubtedly work, but I don’t know which 18650 cells they used inside, so I really can’t tell you.

They do come with a 12 month warranty, for what is is worth...

See the problem with that listing is it seems like from the description he is a one man show, and without uncasing the battery, there is no way to know if he is using salvaged cells or not.

salvaged cells aren’t necessarily bad, it depends on the source. I dunno, it’s sorta difficult to pull the trigger on a battery seller. Wanna go halfsies on a spot welder and we can make our own? Lol

I may take a chance on one of these Chinese batteries...They even are selling this particular one on Sears, and they have sold a ton of them. It's a Chinese motor so a Chinese battery might be a good match, lol. I think it's a matter of if you get a good one or not. The quality control sucks on most of this stuff. And the thing is, the warranties aren't any longer on the Samsung, LG, etc., batteries, even though I agree they are better.


Probably gonna work on the bike a little today. I went and got some proper spacers, hopefully!

Well the e-bike is pretty much built, other than installing a battery and running the wiring, which is minimal with an internal controller.

I ordered the battery last night and it is shipping today from CA so maybe this weekend I can finish it. I also ordered a torque arm and battery bag.

I just wish I could think of someplace I could test ride this thing indoors where warm...like the mall, lol. Just gonna have to rough it I guess. I do want to change the handlebar setup to more of a cruiser comfort ride, but I'll make sure it works first.

Ride it in the mall, no one will be able to catch you. Just wear a helmet

You guys are making me jealous, those e bikes look really fun and I see quite a few people cruising around on them. I have a cheapo Schwinn that came with many brewery stickers. Hadn't been on a bike in like 20 years but got one to go ride with my son and holy crap thats fun. It is like...exhilarating. Don't think I will ever regain the confidence I had as a 11 year old.
