Techniques used to get males - Breeding

Could you please list some good techniques to get male plants from regular seeds? This is for breeding purposes.

Thanks:bigjoint:

I hyave read that if you increase the environmental conditions that usually produce more females than the males that grow are generally stronger and less likely to be hermaphrodite. So go with MH because they emit more blue, cooler temps like mid 70s to 80s higher humidity things like that. If you want a strong female you would want to do the opposite.

I also ead that you really don't want to choose the males that show sex first. It won't translate into quicker harvest and they are undesirable I guess. Also don't use one male use a few. I think all that info was in an article written by subcool but I could be wrong.

Well, I'm asking because there isn't enough light outside to grow and I'm thinking of ways to stress window (yes like wiNdow -glass windows.. not white widow) seedlings to create more males for spring.. Not so funny now, huh, tip top joker :D? Pipe Dream actually understood my question, thank you ;)

if your seed is a male, it is a male, if it is a female, it is a female. femaless can throw nanners and hermie, but i've never heard of males turning female. unless someone can prove me wrong, and if so please do, but you're not gonna coax a female into being a real male regardless how much you stress it..

yea I thought seed genetics were exactly that, genetics! It's in the seeds genes. If it's a male seed, your getting a male! If it's a female seed, your getting a female! I guess you could try to hermy her.....

Be careful what you ask for, your better off not wanting males because your gonna get one anyway when dealing with regular seeds. I would rather get a female and take cuttings and plant them outside when I am ready its a bit easier to just get a female and take other guaranteed females from it than wait for seeds and take the seeds outside to end up with YES another male then what. Eventually you may want a female plant so you can smoke some weed. You only need one male trust me if you buy 10 seeds you will get one.

From everything I ever read the environmental factors have a great deal to do with what sex the plant will be. Some plants will have hermaphrodism in their genetics and will be both male and female no matter what environment they are in. Some plants will turn hermie with any stress, possibly some plants can choose to be a female if the conditions are right and that's why they are so prone to forming pollen sacks with stress. Females are more important than the males, it only takes one male to pollinate many females so perhaps it's a survival mechanism. Interestingly adding birth controll pills to your plants is supposed to increase females.

I guess what it really is that by providing different conditions that females thrive in the males that are thriving in this environment are more versatile. They show the ability to adapt better.

Female plants grown in environments that males thrive in will be the same. If they can thrive in this environment without showing any signs of hermaphroditism they will be a good candidate for breeding.

The whole point is to get rid of these weak genetics that change a plant to a hermie. And also making a selection from the best of the best. Male plants are the hardest to determine if they will be good for breeding so a lot of selection and using multiple males is key in case one has some gentic mutation or something.

There are hermaphrodites than there are plants that are stressed into hermaphroditism and that's where feminized and self crossed seeds come from, by taking a female that isn't a hermaphrodite and stressing her into forming pollen sacks. She does it because she thinks she's going to die, and the only way to keep her genetics going is to pollinate herself.Just like in humans the male gives the chromosome for sex the females is always the same. Therefore there is no male chromosome possible and all the plants have two female chromosomes and are female.

but as i say, i've never once heard of a true male (which is what you're looking for if you want to propperly breed a strain, as opposed to a hermie that can give you some polen or seed whichever it may be) turning any kind of hermie and budding out. again, as i say, all i know from everything that i've ever read and experienced, if it's a male it's a male and no variation of conditions will change that.

There are hermaphrodites that are mostlyu male and there are hemaphrodites that are mostly female. Either way it's a hermaphrodite and may very well have been a male that has grown female parts. We don't like any kind of pollen sacks so nobody really experiments they are just trash. I wonder if you could use similar techniques they use on females on males to get males to turn hermies and if you could basically get all male seeds...who would want to try it's not practical.

All masculized seeds would be for like distribution to breeders i guess. But you're right, its just not practical or worth the time it takes.

Oh, comon elfweed! Without breeders we would all be fucked :D Thanks for the info guys! Hmm, I'm gonna try to stress em' by the window anyways and hope for the best.

Well if you are going to go the stress direction, I'd say try and give them a FUCKED UP light schedual! You know what I mean? Like switch it daily... 18 on 6 off.... Then go 12 on 12 off... Then go 24 hours on, then back to 18 on 6 off... Or something like that... I'd bet that will bring you a plethera of males! hahaha keep us updated!
