Hey guys,

Just a little story that could use your advice...

I started growing about 2 months ago and knew very little about it. I have friends who grow MMM and one of them offered to teach me the basics of growing, gratefully I accepted.

I should have known he was steering me wrong when the first thing he suggested was the full Advanced Nutrients lineup. After some brief research I found that AN is a joke and complete waste of money. I didn't think much of it, just thought he made a poor choice for nutes.

Since then he has bestowed upon me multiple gems of advice to include


  • Plants photosynthesize at night
  • Plants either have 7 or 9 week flowering, 11 week flowering doesn't exist
  • my exhaust fan should be exhausting air from the floor, not the ceiling

It's funny now that I think about it... I usually end up correcting him on 50% of the things he says, almost like he just makes shit up on the fly. The guy wants me to give him a couple ounces for free (he is MMM too) to hold him over until his crop at which point he offered to trade some of his harvest for mine... the problem is I pay for known fem strains and his whole crop is a bunch of unknowns which he claims he will be able to identify once they start flowering... not totally conviced.

Any of you guys run into people like this? What's a good way to deal with them?
 
Easiest solution would be... tell him you decided growing is too hard and sold your equipment... maybe stop talking to him... lol

I've known him for a decade or so, at one point we were best friends... he's always been a bullshitter but I figured maybe he would give some good advice about growing since he has a few more years experience that I did. I don't want to put the guy down too much, we have a lot of fun together when we go out, just frustrating dealing with people's "quirks". kinda makes it doubly hard to tell him "naw man, I don't want to trade".. but really a friend should understand considering the circumstances. he's just the kind of guy who doesn't like to admit when he's wrong

what's your thoughts on giving him clones? I have name brand clones and he wants to trade for his unknown clones. I feel selfish for saying it but why the hell should I trade my known clones for a bunch of unknowns and risk males?
 
If he's an old friend, why not just give him some clones for free, man. Make new ones off your plants. Tell him you don't need any.
 
now that I think about it, i'm definetely not trading clones with him, he grows in his garage... god know what nasties he would bring into my sterile grow rooms...

I'll end up doing this... I guess I really am selfish, I have a hard time giving up clones without getting something in return lol, I gotta work on that
 
I don't expect you to mean mouth the guy. Just be aware "HE KNOWS" if you do not
grant him favors what will he do with the little knowledge he does have?:?:

Clones grow on trees dude. :P Literally! Don't give up like.. your only clone of a strain... but just grow out the plant and make new clones.

you know what, you're right... I shouldn't feel obligated to give him anything, he hasn't contributed anything of tangible value to my grow anyway. if he sulks and doesn't call for a while then that speaks volumes about his character and probably not worth having someone like that around...
 
Give him the clones. I have a friend like this. I helped him get started, gave him clone helped him find some good deals gave him some advice but more showed him where to find good help (better than me). One week hes got 25 plants with buds the size of your forearm. The next everything is lost its all been destroyed by something. Some people always know more than everyone else. They know everything.
I probably give him new clones when hes ready it really doesn't cost me and frankly he tries. But its a pain in the ass.

Funny, that is one way to interpret the quoted message... but I read into it the other way around...: he KNOWS you grow, so why not be generous with him and keep him on your good side? Because who knows what he's going to do with the knowledge that you grow if you make an enemy out of him... keep your friends close, as they say.

I wouldn't give him ounces at all, but certainly a few clones is almost no skin off your plants' backs...

Also: Just give him some clones... if he kills them, oh well. Don't give him more. You'll be justified in denying him a follow up batch without looking like a dick. It's on him if he kills them... but it's on you if you're not even willing to give him some in the first place, ya dig?

we're both MMJ growers, so the risk of getting caught by police is pretty low BUT.. I see what you are saying since many more people other than police would love to rob a grow op. I see this comes down to me being an idiot and letting someone know I grow, such a amateur mistake. dammit I just don't like giving someone $600 of free medicine who doesn't really deserve it but you bring up a good point of staying on his good side.

this thread is making quickly realize how protective and selfish I am of my grow lol

Yeah... always keep it under your hat if possible... but seriously, you don't have to give him all that weed... just tell him your plants got bugs or something horrible like that... throw him a few clones, he'll be happy with that. Be creative. Looking at your grow, you're still so far from finish... I wouldn't even worry about it... you could easily tell him a fan failed and they all burned up or something... or that your harvest finished and you got way less than expected, but you're such a nice guy so you still throw him a quarter for his help... you know somethin' like that. I don't see why he thinks he deserves a couple of your hard worked ounces anyway.
