Surgery & Weed Advice needed

Hi brand new member here! Really need some advice. Today i had surgery in my pinky and ring finger. Have pins in them to help re-allign them after 2 fractures. Im not really in too much pain but the prescribed pain killers help a lot. Im always hesitant on using prescribed pain killers because i always here about overdoses. I would much rather use the more organic method of pain reduction :weed:. I was told not to smoke weed before surgery(so I didn't) but wasnt specifically told not to afterwards. Was however told not to smoke cigs 24 hrs after surgery. Just wondering if its safe to take some dabs. I use a rig with a banger..is this considered smoking? Id love some feedback.

Maybe cigarette smoke.

The reason they tell you to wait 24 hrs after surgery to smoke isn't because it slows healing. Using nicotine after anesthesia increases your chance of heart attack or stroke.


Though I'm sure smoking cigs isn't good for healing. I doubt smoking cannabis slows it. A cannabis tincture or oil would be preferable.

I smoked like a fiend after I had Hernia surgery, I healed up nice and quickly, I stopped taking pain pills a few days in. I had to toke softly, I had a plate of joints already rolled up so I didnt have to work for it lol.

Cannabis is an immune suppressant so it does leave you more susceptible to infections and getting sick etc. However, in your case it really wouldn't hurt that much, only after severe surgeries with high risk of infection i'd advise not to smoke.

I had back surgery several years ago and the prescribed meds did nothing for my pain. I smoked a joint the afternoon I got home and felt great. Just laid down and binged some Netflix. Ended up trading my meds for more buds.

Well thanks everyone for the suggestions. I decided to wait till the next morning to dab just to be safe. Im feelin a lot better now!

That is questionable. Studies show the opposite.

I have been under the knife a lot, took very little pain killers just smoked a bunch and healed up just fine,
A matter of fact I was told multiple times I heal very fast, can't attribute it to my smoking but it sure didn't hurt in any way.
5 knee surgeries, cut my left thumb almost off, had to have surgery, my appendix also, smoked weed through all and it never slowed my healing process down according to the Doctors,
The funny thing is the freaking Doctor gave me 120 10 milligrams lorcet for two week for my thumb I was astounded they would give so many pills for a 2 week period, I used maybe 20 of them I thought it was a bit excessive,
IMO cannabis helped me heal faster then pills and I slept fine with just smoking.
I know how painful it is to have your hands and fingers operated on, it was worse then all my Knee surgeries all put together, I feel for you hope you heal fast and the pain goes away fast, Smoke as needed to help with pain I am proof, it helps and don't hurt at all.

I think the reason you were instructed not to smoke (likely anything)in the first 24 hrs is because any kind of smoke is going to thin your blood and increase your heart rate slowing the properties of your body's natural healing. Thin blood takes longer to coagulate thus taking longer to scab/heal etc. Considering I'm late to the reply party, Im sure your good to go by now but just wanted to give a heads up on as to "why". Hoping you have a speedy recovery!

Expert on surgery here I get worked on so much they gave me a reserved parking space at the hosp. LOL. For caution's sake I would work this so when you go in to have the pens removed (been there, done that) I was clean. The hosp. may test for god knows what. You could run afoul of some ins.co..
