Well, for hydro growing, your medium is usually inert, meaning that it won't provide any nutrition by itself. So it's just a place for the roots to anchor the plant, and the nutrient solution to flow through.

You wanna go straight boyscout, get some lava rocks. Hydroton is only 5 bucks.

cool. i got a photobucket account, trying to work it out wit my cell phone. as for the soil and lavarocks, will any small rocks do say ones found walkin on a trail? or no

I have heard of people using sterile marbles or regular right sized rocks

If you just can't afford a few bucks for hydroton, then pea gravel will work, or lava rock, or small river rock.
