-Latest researches in Horticulture with LEDs ,reveal the importance of > 660 nm light ..
( 2014 'Finds ' show towards 670-680 nm red ,as being the most efficient wls for PS ... )

- Personal ( theoritical ) research about Cannabis Leaf Absorptance
as species has ,also,revealed the importance of ~673-675 nm red for Cannabis Sativa L. ,
as most efficient wls on driving PS. ( vegging @ June 5 / Colombian Landrace )

Question : Who the .... ,still uses a dark room for processing films ?
I mean,can't be many ,to stand as a market for "Photo Red " leds ....? :dunce:...
So ...Those leds must have hit the market for another application as a 'target group' ....
Now ,I wonder .... Who needs 670 nm reds ?

Dim (relatively to i.e. 620 nm reds ) ,dark red light ..

indoor growing of mj ....

Only a combination of monos can replicate the most efficient spectrum ( 'tailored' ) ,
for that herb ...
And of course have the possibility to adjust the overall light quality ,depending
on growth phase ....
"Whites" are just a compromise ....
Some whites are more than good of "compromises" ...
Still ...If we 're after the highest efficiency possible ,
monochromatics are the only way ....


Cyan wls ,are used very efficiently in PS .


As mj ages towards middle of flowering ,FR (700-750 nm ) can not induce stretching anymore ..
In fact ,those wls are used much more efficiently,
even from reds in some cases ,for driving PS ...
Plant is aging ,PS systems 'drop' in their efficiency ...
Leaves get old.
Photomorphogenetically ,the importance (and the 'risks' hidden behind ) of the FR wls ,
can be easily seen / noticed on lower/deep canopy buds.
Always the ones maturing first.

FR speeds up the transition into reproductive stage.
If induced to early and /or at high irradiances ,stretching will occur ..
(Like with HPS ,in the first 2-3 weeks of 12/12 ) .


COB warm whites 3500-2700 are the best choice for PC leds to be utilised ,
for growing purposes .They combine high efficiency ,easy DIY ,high irradiance and a
spectrum that falls ,right within the herb's 'tailored' -most efficient- spectrum.
(with 'Deep reds & Cyan ,being the main wls ,'missing' somewhat ... )

Neutral-Cool White Cobs ,can be used,as alternative ,
along with R & FR supplemented . (600-750 nm )


Best spectrum is high irradiance .

Why ?

Not good for remote controllers ,neither for security systems , alarms,etc ..
Not good for signalling red ,at general ... Some old / aged people might not even be able to see it at all ....

With the grey line is shown the most effective vegging spectra.
( Leaf rel. Absorption x RQE McCree,1972 @ 5 July ,Colombian Landrace. )

The light-green light is a typical 3000K PC white light rel spectrum.

The rest is the Cree XPE series of monochromatic leds.

Using 'monos' a much more tailored ,thus more efficient ,spectrum can be achieved.
But design is generally more complicated ,than using a WW 3000K COB ....
Which in turn ,has some photon efficient losses" ,as also more light losses from phosphor conversion.

PC white leds ,lack also the ability to 'alter ' their spectrum accordingly ,to
a 'species reproductive phase ' spectrum ...( Less blue ,More FR ) .

A design utilising monos ( up to ~750 nm FR ) ,can achieve that 'spectrum alteration' ...


Still ,both led approaches or even better their "marriage" ,fit to the average mj grower.

Each one having it's special and individual pro's and con's ...

PC Warm whites:

-Both 3000K & 2700 K of same Color Rendering Index rating ,
have same 'amber phosphor emission' ...
Their main difference is the blue excitation source peak .

- 2700K has less power at blue wls than 3000K.
( 2700K has 'shorter peak ' at blue wls ,relative to 3000K.)

-Both at 80 CRI rating have an amber phosphor emission peak ( ~600 nm ) .

-Both at 90 CRI rating have a red phosphor emission peak ( ~630 nm ) .

- 90 CRI are less efficient due to red phosphors used .
(excitation losses and phosphor re-excitation effect.
& Emission peak 'far distant' from excitation peak ,thus greater conversion energy losses -heat.)

This might be the best explanation,behind the HPS good-great flowering abilities :

Solid line is 5 of July ...
Mj outdoors is still , well in vegging / vegetative growth ...
( Only ~two weeks 've past from 21st of June ...)

25 of July can be assumed as the pre-flowering date
( middle to late veg -start of reproductive phase ..)

14 of August is early flowering ....

22 of September is late flowering ...
( ~15-30 days till harvest remaining at average ..)

From research pdf :
On the first two dates (5 and 25 July), the plants were vegetative, but on the last two dates (14 August and 22 September) the plants were producing seedless floral clusters (sinsemilla)


Notice how much less transmitance and reflectance ,occur after 700 nm ,during flowering ....
Cannabis absorbs those wls during flowering ...
Massively ,in fact ...


The smaller transmitance at green wls ,can be a sign of leaves thickening by age
and not that green light is used more efficiently at that leaf's late stage ...
As reflectance is ,in fact, increased ,throughtout the 450-700 nm range ,during flowering ...

Anyway ...
HPS lamps are rich on those 700-750 nm wls ..

Digikey has the 650-655nm version (P2) top bin (14)

Just kidding. Thanks for the heads up..the mouser link was perfect. Broadening the red range sounds like a great idea. The cri must be inching higher with these little additions.

I still develop black and white film, I feel kind of like a dinasour. It is getting harder to find supplies localy but there is one place in Portland OR. still carries it. I wouldn't sweat the efficiency difference...maybe if it was the meat of the spectrum but they are just supplementing the white.

I'm looking at getting a few to mix with the 660s. Might stretch more but I've got a tall tent now to deal with that. So far stretch is fine..their just growing really fast.

too late... lol already got the shipping notice. for 40 bucks? Why not right?? Ha... guess thats the mentality after splooging on x8 ABs for 200w. Naw, it was almost instant after thinking about 1.) yea, the slight eff increase, 4%, and almost 50% eff @350, 2.) its 670 o_O, and after readings SDS' recent teachings- sounded good. 3.) little less red power/watts spread over the same amount of emitters, so bettter spread and easier mixing? 4.) Itd be a 100% CREE panel lol... yea, i know...

But i am thinking about mixing the 656nm(?) luxeons with the 665-670nm Crees for a mix of both worlds, but there goes the cree thing ;) even consideered the 660-665 crees instead, but i wanna seee this 670 shit, and if I don't like it,,,, AND have enough motivation to unsolder all of em, I can put the luxeons right back in.

It was originally 630 vs. 660, now is it 660 vs. 670? ha, surely theyre close enough to each other..

The light sounds like it's got some hi tech..can't find nowhere else..star trek type sh!t going down now...lol :mrgreen:
