Steve Bannon | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)

Interesting conversation. Bannon is wrong about the tax cuts helping average Trump voters, absolutely wrong about how Trump is a brilliant guy, wrong about how they had to include corporate tax cuts in the bill to get it passed through congress, wrong about China and the economy.. These people live in a completely different reality it seems like. I was speaking to a coworker about Trump's speech at the UN, how the entire room laughed at him when he said his administration has probably accomplished more in two years than any other administration in American history, his response was "We must have been watching completely different channels..". They see all the other representatives of the world laugh and believe they're laughing because they hate America and Trump is finally putting America first. The entire GOP is constantly pushing this agenda to their base. They're adding gas to the social fires that stir up their emotions, and producing propaganda designed to divide "us" v. "them", and dehumanize anyone who doesn't agree with them.

I was speaking to another Trump supporter I work with and asked him why he supported Trump, he's white, top end of middle aged, from MA, raised in CA with a thick Boston accent.. His response was right out of FOX News; "The 11th hour", "How can they know what happened 35 years ago?!", "We all did stupid shit when we were kids!", etc.

Both of these people admit they don't have time to verify the accuracy of these claims. A relative has said they can't spend all their time fact checking every claim since they work too much, they just feel like the GOP is telling them the truth and the Democrats want to raise their taxes. Even after you bring up the insane GOP deficit from the tax cuts and the crash that the GOP has ensured with the banking deregulations..


So do you believe these kinds of conversations should be had between people we support and people we despise? Why/why not?

I think it always helps to understand what the other side believes. After that, it comes down to what objective can be met by talking about it. For myself, I have a brother who is hard core Trumper and we've talked enough so that I understand that he is a hard core Trump supporter and his positions. We both put family first and don't talk abut it much any more. Same with co-workers. Why create stress on the job? We can settle this in the polls.

It's quite possible that one day, I'll see my brother on the other side while I'm counter-demonstrating against a fascist rally in Portland. That will be interesting if that happens

I've never actually spoken to anyone self-identifying as a Trump supporter, although I have communicated my thoughts using sign language
