yeah I know, how old am i? :) actually Im in my late 50s back to smoking after a 30 year absence and first grow.... but it is the calyxes that have the majority of thc in them that is the main part of a bud? or is it the trichs on the calyxes? feel free to make me feel ike an idiot :)
 
Hi Bob - why would anybody want to make you feel like an idiot? - everybody here are kind people. The highest concentration of THC is in the trichomes - that's why they make hash of them and not from the calyxes. The calyxes probably have the highest concentration after the trichomes.

The trichomes, aka resin glands, have the majority of the THC. The calyxes have the majority of the trichomes. There are also little bud leaves interspersed throughout the calyxes that have a high concentration of trichomes. Hope this helps.:weed:

but the trichs of which you speak are on the outside of the calyxes right? so when the calyxes swell, what do they swell with?
Is the majority of the bud the dried calyxes?

I had 20 week old 6' to 8' plants in veg before I found out they needed 12/12 to flower. I didn't even know where the branches grew from.

well I follow a couple of your threads and you certainly have come a long way, I guess theres hope yet :)
 
The calyxes don't swell because it fills up with THC. I think it' smore full of plant matter, but what also makes the bud swell is the fact that the trichomes that cover each calyx thoroughly grow. So when the lots of small trichomes grow it makes it all swell a lot. Yes - the main stuff we smoke is calyxes - but mostly because it's where the trichomes are. The small leaves from a bud that are filled with trichomes can be almost as potent as the rest of the bud. Also the calyxes are where most of the aromatic oils are thus making the best smoking experience. The small leaves will be potent if covered with trichome, but smoke won't taste as good and can be more rough to smoke.

When calyxes "swell" they are simply growing. The plant is creating more cells which equates to more harvest weight and more trichomes.:weed:
 
sigh, I feel like such a doofus sometimes, for some bizarre reaso I thought there was THC inside the calyx also, even though I have read numerous things about the head of the gland being where the thc is produced, and seen those photos before, but sometimes until you think of 2 different things at the same time you dont make the connections :)

yeah, well I tell myself that all I knew before was from 30 years ago, and back then people were just starting to talk about "sensimilla" as if it were a specific strain of mj and "ooh look, red hairs", and as I understand it now that simply refers to an unpollinated female bud
this is in the deep midwest so we were a but behind I think :)
 
Bob - i don't think the THC is in the resin only. I have harvested plants with almost no resin and i have smoken small leaves without glands and got high from it. So i think the calyxes would contain THC also. Not a pro though. Maybe all that stuff i smoked had just very small glands that couldn't be seen or something, but think it's all over the plant - just highest concentration in the resin. Hope this clears it up a bit. Don't think you were wrong about your thought.

Everywhere but the stem. Phife and his crew ran butane extractions on every part of the plant, including it's ashes, and the only part they found no honey oil was the bare stem. Though there may be some strains with trichomes on the stem that they didn't test.

Brimi is correct, just different concentrations of trichomes on different parts of the plant. We want capulet stalked trichomes. I have never seen any information on cannabinoids being produced anywhere but trichomes but they may be. Something I am very interested in too.

thanks hobbes, yeah it makes sense that its on the outside only, so the actual mmm... internal "flesh" of the plant(after stripping off the external layer) has no thc/cbn/cbds?
 
Hmm - not sure, but im sure to have read that a lab that did a test found out that the only part of the plant that didnt contain THC at all is the roots. Guess the stem was ground up, so that the external layer (hehe - don't know what it's called either) and center of the stem was mixed together. I actually think your theory is quite true.
 
well I always read about how the bud sweels up(gains a lot of weight) the last couple of weeks... but, assuming that is because the calyxes are swelling, and "new skin" growth they put on will have immature trichs? or is 2 weeks long enough to go from new to amber?
 
I'm surprised there's not more specific details as to THC "in" calyxes, not "on" them. I've got an 8' Thai that is basically just a zillion calyxes. Not buds, just calyxes. My harvest will look like a bag of shelled sunflower seeds....
