though he never did go to the mall.

maybe i'll just let him keep the 55 he already has. he has this next week off from school for the holiday. he can work in the yard with me for the other 54. ;)

my wife, my son and i all sat down and talked. so the deal was made with the understanding he was going to the mall. he never made it to the mall so we split things up. we figured he should have spent about 20 at the movies. since he didn't i gave him 20 bucks. so now he has 75. my wife says it's now gonna be her job to keep him from spending it.

i offered him more money to help me in the yard and he said "no, i'm cool for now". :)

he's so damn adorable.

im not insulting fdd at all. i think he can be very smart. but this little "experiment" goes in the face of what I have learned from my parents and my grandmother. You have to earn what you get, and getting more money as a reward for not spending money is just stupid. Either way the kid gets paid. How about you say you'll cover the cost of the ticket, and if he does what he is supposed to at home, you'll not only cover the cost of the ticket, but double what you give him.

I think a better lesson would be for him to earn the money he is given. and thats all the money he gets to get for x amount of time. He has to learn how to prioritize and budget that way.
If you put your money in a good CD, it earns good money...but you can't spend it....so you earn money...by not spending money....what a fucking concept.

well shit, giving him hella money isnt really going to do that. If anything, give him 54 bucks and say "this is all you will get to spend on whatever you want for three weeks. make it last"
i learned how to budget and save because i always had to save up money to go places, get the things I wanted. And if my parents did give me money, it would be the only money I would have for like two months. Sure learned not to spend my money on stupid things that way
I learned how to budget and save because my parents wouldn't give me SHIT so I had to multiply my money by playing with flowers :)

But I think that was a COOL ASS IDEA.

You're mad about the amount...
If it had only been $20 he had been given originally...Would you feel better?

If he has the means to teach his kid a $54-$108 dollar life lesson so be it.
My parents never taught me anything about money or credit and to this day I'm horrible with cash.
You just sound bitter and jealous.
Exactly, if you've got some money, and no plan to spend it, and a kid in front of you that could learn something from it...There you go :)

im not bitter or jealous, i just think its a foolish waste of money. but thats how I was brought up. It helps growing up worrying about money, taught me to be careful with it after watching my dad go up and down in his financial situation. this 54 dollar lesson doesnt teach shit
It does teach something. He learned to be thrifty as shit. I bet he tries to spend $3 at a time FOREVER now.

im just trying to be practical. 54 bucks isnt cheap. thats alot of money to teach a lesson which could easily be taught another way. and if he doesnt know what kind of man his son is by now, im doubting this will show him the kind of man his son is.
COULD be taught another way...
But the money is there, obviously not FOR anything else...
So WHY NOT...

And OBVIOUSLY he has SOME IDEA of who his son is...OR HE WOULDN'T GIVE HIM $54 DOLLARS TO PLAY WITH :)

i would be tickled fucking pink if it only cost me $108 to teach my kid a money lesson...Urca, the kid doesn't spend money=the kid gets more money, uhhhh i think thats a pretty good lesson on saving and prioritizing right there...that kid was watching every penny he spent tonight, i promise. thats genius fdd :peace:
:)
come home with 80 bucks. :)

get all his friends to pool in their cash. :-P

so many ways this could go.
That would have been crazy, when I was first reading I didn't think he would come back with more at all :)
i cant see his point because it just makes no sense. its a short term lesson where there is no negitive outcome.
Not "Short Term" now he wants to spend less to have more...Good lesson :)
he just walked in the door, ....

... he has 55 dollars.

Not only would I not spend any of my $54 I would be hustling to try and earn more money. I would show up back home with like $80 for you to double.

Seriously though, that money is worth double if he waits until this evening. I can hardly bring myself to buy popcorn and drinks at the movie theater because they are so expensive at regular price; I get it about once every two years for special occasions. I don't think I could enjoy a movie or movie theater food knowing I was paying double for it.

i'm just sitting here, giggling.
he had 4 dollars in his wallet already. they went in during matinee hours and stayed for 2 movies. his friends insisted on paying for everything. he only spent 3 dollars of his own money. i am going to be a man of my word and give him 54 dollars. :)
i love my son.
Awesome!

Urca, seriously, this is some common parenting here. Probably more common than not. And when you call other peoples parenting "retarded", well that is offensive on several levels.
