This is the first time I have used Smart pots outdoors. Indoors I usually see roots growing through the bottom and the sides completely air prune. Outdoors will these plants root into the ground without a hard barrier? Thanks to anyone with outdoor experience with cloth pots that can help me. These are 30 gallon if that makes a difference.

My first year using them this year, but I've been told yes, they will root through. Some growers put alf-alfa all around the bags and on top of the soil to prevent water evaperation, and to give the roots a place to go when they get there. I hope mine reach the bottom and go through !!

Just remember,if your smart pots are black you need to shade them with some thing. They get really hot in the direct sun light.:blsmoke:

Thanks for the replies. I actually hope my ladies do root into the ground letting them develop more root mass as they become monsters. Thanks so much for the replies.

Let that Plant get crowded, root wise, and your male/female ratio has just been altered from 20/80 potential, to 60/40. It's all about the plant's needs, first, not what a salesman tells you. Hope I'm wrong.

Trust me they will go through the bottom used them last year. The roots actually will stick the pot to the ground unless you put it on a pallet. So be warned the roots will go through faster than most think. I bet by the end of June roots will be through most smartpots. Keepem green dirtyd

Yea I am thinking roots to the bottom of the 200 gallon smart pot might take longer than that! lol

I uses 200 gallon smart pots out door. My roots always grow through the bottom of the pot. The last few years I have been slicing the bottom of the smart pot to allow the root to grow through a little more easier. underneath the pot i mix old soil with a harvest type soil, so at the mid to end of flowering the roots are growing into the harvest soil and helps feed my massive root system. Bigger roots-> Bigger Plants-> Bigger buds!!!
