Not at all.
The extra verm casing layer is for extra moisture.

So that being said. You are going to have to FAE [ fresh air exchange ] and MIST Your terrarium more often.
Perhaps giving Your cakes a second dunk after pins have started to form?
Just so it gives THAT MUCH more nutes and energy to grow FATTY FRUITS !!!!

Keeping the humidity and moisture up is key.

I have successfully fruited many psychedelic mushrooms with NO VERM CASING LAYER.
However, vermiculite is extremely cheap... Why don't You just run to the local gardening store and pick some up?

No. Vermiculite came later in recipe. Cakes can and will fruit without it. Vermiculite is suppose to keep the cake from drying too quick. It's a casing.

I've found rolling the cakes in vermiculite makes a bigger mess and it sticks to the stems of the shrooms. My last crop wasn't rolled in verm and had 4 flushes per cake. I've grown more cakes without it then with it.

Ok thanks. Reason I asked is I just got a big bill from my car guy and didn't have the spare cash =(
