removing leaves?

The answer to this question is always no. Never remove leaves only trim them if they are starting to yellow/dry out/wilt. In your situation topping the plants would be the best solution, the more tops the better and they will start to bush out and grow horizontally instead of vertically.

I agree with Majek, you generally don't remove leaves. Really you would only remove leaves if you have a small grow space and for example you are growing a ScROG. You would be removing the bottom canopy leaves because they wouldn't be able to get enough sunlight. In your situation you really don't want to remove any leaves until harvest because it slows down growth and retards the buds.
